At a council meeting on 16 December, Newcastle City Council’s ruling Lib Dem executive approved plans for a mini council estate to be built on the former Parkway School site.

When local Conservatives warned people that Liberal Democrats had plans to build houses on former school sites last year, Lib Dems said we were lying. Now, local people know the truth.

A cross party campaign has now been established to fight these plans.

Many local residents have expressed disappointment that Lib Dems have chosen to ignore the findings of the consultation the council carried out in 2008.

The preference of the vast majority of local residents was for the site to be kept for education use or open space improvements, why then would the council offer the land for social housing?

When challenged by local councillor, Marc Donnelly, at the meeting, the Leader of Council would not even agree to take notice of the original consultation and instead insisted that residents would again be consulted. This is not good enough.

Together, we can fight to ensure that the council listens to the views of local residents about land that we - not the council - own.

Stephen Parkinson briefs Shadow Ministers Bob Neill and Lord Michael Bates about Lib Dem plans for the Parkway site

We, the undersigned, demand that Newcastle City Council withdraw plans to build council housing on the former Parkway School site.

We demand that the site is kept for education use and open space improvements as requested by local people in the consultation organised by Newcastle City Council in late 2008.

The Don't Build Houses on the former Parkway School Site petition to Newcastle City Council was written by JS and is in the category Environment at GoPetition.
