The City of Edmonton does not allocate sufficient funding to support providing basic services to residents. Of particular concern is the unsafe and irresponsible approach to clearing Edmonton streets of snow. It has been over 30 days since the last snowfall and many neighbourhood streets are not cleared of any snow making driving conditions dangerous and walking treacherous.
High residential taxes, the cost of wear and tear on cars, increased accidents and high automobile insurance premiums, and personal safety affect the quality of life for Edmontonians. City residents do not receive any basic city services, garbage pickup has been put on residential EPCOR bills, a cost of $26 a month.
Many Canadian cities with similar policies receive excellent residential services and pay no more in taxes. Support is needed to push Edmonton City Council to build safe communities. Basic services impact the health and wellness of all Edmontonians as we go about the routines of our daily lives in this most northern of Canadian cities. Basic residential services must be provided before any tax dollars are spent on dreams of hosting events like Expo. We deserve to come first! We pay to come first!
We, the undersigned, call on Mayor Mandel and Edmonton City Council, to immediately adopt responsible policy, allocate adequate monies, buy snowplow equipment, and follow through with street snow plowing and some snow removal to ensure the safety of Edmontonians. All Edmonton streets should be plowed within 48 hours if it snows more than 3 cm.
This policy is a normal service provided in most Canadian cities, Halifax and Winnipeg excellent examples. Edmontonians deserve the same excellent service. We support provision of basic residential services before Expo.
