**This petition is now closed after a winning result for Rabbitohs' supporters. Upon appeal to the Federal Court in 2001, South Sydney won readmission into the premiership for the 2002 season.**
South Sydney are a foundation club of the New South Wales Rugby League formed in 1908. They are the most successful Rugby League club in history. They have one of the biggest followings of any team in Australia and are a community owned club.
In 1995 Rupert Murdoch's News Ltd launched a takeover of the National Rugby League (NRL) competition in Australia. South Sydney were the strongest and most critical of this corporate take over the sport. In 1999 despite being competitive on the field and financially sound off the field the now News Ltd controlled NRL decided to axe Souths form the NRL competition.
Souths recently lost a Federal Court case for reinstatement where the judge said in his decision that there were probably strong reasons for Souths being reinstated but Trade Practices Law couldn't help Souths.
Souths are intending to appeal the decision and continue their public campaign against the corporate takeover of Rugby League and the destruction of their community assets.
Sign this petition if you don't agree with corporations being able to take over community sports clubs and their competitions.
As a foundation club that has been one of the greater contributors to the game of Rugby League, that the NRL profits from, and as a financially sound club with one of the largest supporter bases, we the undersigned demand that the National Rugby League reinstate South Sydney District Rugby League Football Club to their rightful position in the National Rugby League competition.
