On Nov 3, 2011, a week after we handed over this petition, the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation of Nepal announced it will not allow hunting in Kanchenjunga Conservation area. Our campaign has been successful! Thank you all who signed the petition.
The Nepal government is planning to develop Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCA) as a hunting reserve. The Animal Welfare Network Nepal (AWNN) strongly opposes this decision.
KCA is a unique area which has been recognised as a Gift to the Earth by WWF's Living Planet Campaign. It is also selected as one of the 200 eco regions by WWF.
The government wants to allow international hunters to kill Himalayan Blue Sheep. These are the prey species of the highly endangered Snow Leopard.
Also, income from hunting generally does not benefit local communities and wildlife. AWNN wants the government to continue to develop KCA as an eco tourism destination, using community participation.
We, the undersigned, call on the government of Nepal to ban hunting in Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, in order to protect the Blue Sheep and Snow Leopard, and to develop the region as an eco tourism destination using community participation.
Nepal will not be given credit to opening its precious conservation areas in the Himalayas for hunting. Instead these regions should be considered sacred areas in which killing animals is banned.
The Stop hunting in Himalayas, Nepal petition to Government was written by Take Action Now and is in the category Animal Rights at GoPetition.
