Save Claudio Bravo’ famous Arab horses.

In Taroudant, in the foothills of the high Atlas in Morocco some 150 km from Jarjeer Mule and Donkey Refuge, is the old home, known as the Palais Claudio Bravo, of the Chilean painter who died in 2011. He was a great man and a horse lover who had the finest Arab horses in the world.

A friend and equine expert visited a few days ago as part of a tour of Morocco. This is an extract from what she told me and it has been verified by other witnesses.

“We were taken to see the horses which we were told had been rescued but were separate from the hotel and were being nursed back to health. Before the tour I was told they were in a poor condition and that they didn’t always allow guests to see them because they would be shocked but not to be worried as “they were in a recovery programme”.

On arrival before the doors were opened the horses heard us and called out.

The stables revealed a much different and truly horrifying scene of some 9 or 10 horses starving. Their poor bodies were just skin stretched over their bones. Bones and lumps were protruding everywhere. It was horrific. It appeared they hadn’t been groomed for ages. Their eyes were crusty and weeping. They looked frightened and had hardly any bedding down just a few tiny pieces of dry straw and what looked like patches of dirty sawdust. In summary they were soiled, matted and filthy. Their bedding was so thin it didn’t cover the stable floor. They clearly hadn’t been groomed or looked after for what seemed like years. I’m a horse owner myself and I was deeply shocked by what I saw.

They had name plaques and dates of birth at each stable and it seemed that they were the horses of Claudio Bravo, once fine Arabs.

The tack room in contrast showed tack in pristine condition, silver cups polished, winners rosettes and certificates, photos and other items all of which had clearly been very well looked after. There were pictures of them in full health showing their prizes. It was clear that these once wonderful horses were in a state of abject neglect. I guessed they were Arabian horses from their heads.

There was no feed sacks or Haynets visible anywhere and none in the stables. No turnout areas or Paddocks/ grazing in the vicinity (we looked from above up the tower) and so it was clear they hadn’t been out of their stables for a long long time. They were kept in a building with big screen doors so not visible from outside, with a opaque roof so It was bright but all enclosed.

Some displayed weaving characteristic of acute stress. Some appeared to have growths but this may have been their skeleton showing through. Some had worn marks on the outside of their stable doors as they rubbed at it. All had their skeletons showing through their skin.

The stable yard had a large horse trough empty in it and a few weeds growing round it so no horse had even grazed outside its stable. It was clear that this was a horse equivalent of a concentration camp, the poor things imprisoned and starved.

All around the estate there were people working on the land, there were staff in the hotel too but none of these were looking after the poor horses who were so thin that only expert help would assist them. There appeared to be no such support and this is as far as I am concerned neglect of the worst kind.

We were sick. We were in tears. We hated ourselves for staying in such a place and this cast a huge shadow over us. The house and gardens environment was very luxurious and yet the horses were neglected, it made no sense especially when we read that the artist himself loved his animals.

A man appeared who spoke neither French nor English. He appeared to be a labourer who was in charge. He shouted loudly and aggressively at a horse when it kicked at the door.

It was a horrific experience and we couldn’t wait to leave the place and do whatever we could to alert others to the situation.”

We must act. and ensure veterinary help. Importantly we need trucks and I’m afraid that some of the horses cannot even stand. I can’t tell you how upset I am that this is happened in a country that I love where horses are respected and the Arab horse in particular.

Save Old Man Boro's Dog

Old Man Boro has his best friend Linda who is an 18 Month old Kelpie and they both desperately require your help! Most people who live in the Glen Eira City Council areas will know Boro and his companion Linda as they spend most days walking from Caufield to Carnegie with Linda on her leash. Linda is a lovely, friendly and well behaved dog, Linda is usually smothered with love and affection from locals when seen in the streets and when tied up outside shops. Linda loves being patted by adults and especially children and has never harmed anyone. Boro is an elderly man who lives alone with his Kelpie. His dog is all he has now and his young Kelpie provides him with that sense of safety, security and comfort, especially at night. On Friday the 10th of March whilst walking Linda as he does every day, near the Caulfield race track heading towards the dog park. Linda accidentally got loose from her lead due to pulling to hard from excitement and snuck through a big gap in a fence at the Caulfield racetrack. Boro did his best to run after her but being an old man with a young dog this was difficult for him. Boro eventually caught up to Linda where she had stopped to roll around in horse poo. The council though were concerned that Boro could have harmed a horse even though this was not the case and sadly Linda the young Kelpie was confiscated by the Glen Eira City Council and sent to the RSPCA to decide on a day to put this innocent young Kelpie down. Boro doesn't drive so the following day he used all his pensioner money to be able to get a taxi to Burwood's RSPCA to try and get his dog back only to find out when he arrived that he was not allowed to see his dog. This poor old man has been sitting at the council office every single day with a sign begging to get his dog back but they have shown no interest. Please sign this petition and share it around to stop the Glen Eira City Council from putting down innocent Linda who was only having fun and causing no harm. Help us to reunite Boro with Linda, as she is his only family and friend and Boro is lost without him.

Help save buddy

On the 2nd of march 2017 a mother of 2 has attempted to drown her children in the Murray river at moama. In this selfish mothers attempt to drown her 2 boys buddy the dog has reacted and attempted to save the boys in doing so he has bit the eldest boy in his rescue attempts unfortunately he was unable to save the youngest boy and has also bit the mother. Buddy is his name and he is a pitbull cross and has since been seized from his owners who are distraught by not only what this mother has done but also that our dog has been seized when he should be labelled a hero instead. Buddy doesn't have a history of being a dangerous dog and most certainly hasn't ever bitten anyone and has never been seized before for anything. Buddy is a member of our family and has grown up around children his whole life and has been the most gentelest dog, he has clearly seen a child in distress and attempted to help, dogs don't have hands to help like us humans they have to use their teeth and in doing so it's being petrayed as this dog has attacked the young boy.

Protect Changi Point Ferry Terminal Cats

We were alerted to the removal of two community cats from the Changi Point Ferry Terminal on Tuesday, 29 Dec 2015.

The community cats have been living in peaceful co-existence with visitors and Changi Village residents.

There was no attempt at mediation before pest control allegedly swooped in and removed the cats.

We are still trying to establish if it was pest control that took the cats. What we know is the cats have been impounded at AVA.

Update at 12 noon on 31 Dec 2015: The cats have since been bailed out by Cat Welfare Society volunteers.

Provide a Forest Lake Dog Park that caters for small dogs

Without any consultation with the users of the current dog park in Forest Lake, Queensland our local councillor, Angela Owen-Taylor, is closing the park and moving the dog park to an unsuitable site and not providing a divided park so that small dogs can play in one area while the large dogs can play in a separate area.

It is too dangerous to have only the one park fits all sizes, therefore I am petitioning both Brisbane City Council and Cr Angela Owen-Taylor to make adjustments to the new dog park to accommodate all dogs safely with adequately or provide a small dog park only within Forest Lake.

Support a Cairns CBD Parkland and Flying Fox Roosting Area

•	The spectacled flying fox, a listed vulnerable species under the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act), has had a nationally recognised and long-established camp site/nursery colony in the heritage listed trees around the Cairns library and on vacant land adjacent to the Novotel Oasis resort.

•	This camp may contain as much as 10% of the total Australian population of this species which has a significant role as a pollinator and seed disperser in maintaining the biodiversity of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

•	In March 2013 the lawyers representing the Novotel Oasis Resort sent a letter to Council complaining that the vacant land between the Novotel Oasis resort was being devalued and difficult to sell because of the presence of flying foxes. They demanded that Council act to remedy the situation and threatened legal action if they didn’t.

•	Council subsequently applied in August 2013 for approval to trim roost trees on the library and Novotel sites under the EPBC Act and approval was granted in September 2013.

•	Tree lopping activities carried out by Council in April/May 2014 exceeded the permissible limits set under the Heritage Act and Council has been issued with infringement notices totalling $14,000. The contractor, Garden Friendly Mulchers, were also issued with $11,000 of infringement notices for carrying out the offending works.

•	These tree lopping activities also reduced the carrying capacity of the well-established roost trees at the library and adjacent to the Oasis resort. This has resulted in the colony dispersing into additional trees, even palm trees, in front of the Oasis resort in Lake Street, along Florence Street, Abbott Street and even in Shield Street.

•	The creation of a new CBD parkland would provide this flying fox colony a secure camp area for breeding and roosting and prevent the need for them to disperse over a wider area. This would also provide opportunities for tourist operators to showcase the roosting flying foxes and evening flyout to tourists visiting the area for its world heritage listed flora, fauna and environmental values.

Investigate New York City Animal Shelters In Violation of Humane Laws and the Public Trust

New York City Animal Care & Control shelters, operated and funded by the public and controlled under the auspices of the NYC Department of Health since 1995 and managed by Animal Care & Control Administration have been operating in defiance of every conceivable recognized humane welfare ethic and public law for far too long.

The breadth and scope of these animal welfare violations and violations of law literally boggle the mind and defy all rationality. The public trust is being violated regularly behind a veil of secrecy.

Animals brought into NYC shelters are subjected to an ever-present epidemic of kennel cough which is used as an excuse to murder dogs as young as 7 months old. Dogs brought into NYC shelters healthy are sick within 4-6 days of incarceration and killed often one day after beginning treatment for kennel cough. Cats are mishandled, abused and left to suffer and die from injuries and/or killed. Mother cats are aborted of kittens and then killed, leaving day-old babies to die of starvation in their cages.

Time constraints to find these animals homes can be as limited as one day, 5 days or can last for months, depending upon veiled decisions made by AC&C Administration, without rhyme, reason or explanation, but in most cases death is the result.

Conditions in NYC shelters can best be described as chaotic, unsanitary and overcrowded on a regular basis. Yet NY City Council, the DOH and the AC&C have reneged on building two new shelters in two unrepresented boroughs in the Bronx and Queens promised and funded in 2011. AC&C Administration denies that it is killing for space, but when 330 dogs and 102 cats are murdered within 41 days, clearly, this belies AC&C claims. On average, NYC shelters kill 2,400-3,000 dogs and as many if not more cats every year which would be a lot more if not for the fact that NYC rescues and adopters save thousands. These animals are generally younger than 3 years old and highly adoptable, until AC&C finds an excuse to murder them.

Shelter workers and volunteers are bound by gag orders that violate First Amendment rights and it is apparent that they would not be asked to sign such gag orders if there were not things going on in NYC shelters the DOH and AC&C Administration does not want the public to know.

The concept of the word "euthanasia" - defined as "the merciful killing of sick or injured animals beyond redemption" - is regularly defiled when dogs as young as 7 months old and kittens days' old are murdered, not because they're irredeemable or as a mercy, but for expedience.

To add insult to injury, prejudice is being used to eradicate a dog breed - Pit Bulls - that die in record numbers every day and which are condemned to death in shelters through a prejudicial public housing ban on dogs over 25 lbs. which conveniently targets Pit Bulls. As there is no Breed Specific Legislation in NYC, this is outright prejudice and persecution and yet another violation of not just animal welfare laws but public law.

NYC, with the culpability of the Bloomberg, Administration, the Department of Health, AC&C Administration and NY City Council have been operating horrific animal shelters best described as slaughterhouses with full knowledge of an epidemic of disease and utilizing premeditated murder as a means to control a homeless animal population, aiding and abetting each other, they conceal the realities of shelter operations and violate shelter guidelines and humane laws regularly.

We demand that the current Executive Director of the AC&C, Risa Weinstock, be terminated immediately for lying to the public on the record at a public forum, for telling a concerned NYC citizen that animals are killed "Because they get sick. They get very sick," when she is (or should be) well aware that animals are being made sick in NYC shelters on her watch.

We demand the removal of the NYC Department of Health as overseer of shelter operations and financial manager of NYC shelter budgets for its failure to control an ongoing epidemic for years.

Furthermore, after operating for 3 years without a Chief Veterinarian, on January 11, 2014, the AC&C announced the appointment of Dr. Lisa Hara Levin for that position. Dr. Levin's resume includes extensive experience working with research laboratories and vivisectionists, but not in shelter veterinary medicine. We find this to be a very curious choice for the position of Chief Operating Vet for NYC shelters. We would like to know why this choice was made without consulting the public that finances NYC shelters and if it was made with the consent of Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Finally, the people of New York City that fund and rely on these shelters want the veil pulled back on NYC shelter operations. We request a long overdue investigation into shelter operations and conditions and we want to know what becomes of the remains of the murdered animals.

We demand a restructuring of NYC shelters as true no-kill shelters immediately, the removal of the Department of Health as overseer of the shelters and the removal of the current Animal Care & Control Executive Director, Risa Weinstock and her assistant, Richard Gentiles, the people who make arbitrary life-and-death decisions with willful disregard for public opinion. NYC taxpayers are being deceived by shelter management and our intelligence is being disparaged by outright lies.

As taxpaying citizens and as a society we owe no less to the innocent victims of NYC shelters and as decent people of conscience we seek to have NYC shelters become no-kill now, not after one million animals are senselessly murdered.

Attached is the links to a recent "kill list" and the "Gone" or "Destroyed" folders for a 28-day period showing 153 dogs killed in a 28-day period. Ninety-eight percent of these dogs were murdered for kennel cough and this is apparent on their blogs.

IT'S TIME TO PUT A STOP TO THE CONSPIRACY OF MURDER IN NEW YORK CITY. AS A SOCIETY THIS IS OUR DUTY. FOR THE ANIMALS IT IS LIFE OR DEATH.

Ear cropping and tail docking should remain legal, and once again be returned to the curriculums of our Veterinarian colleges

Ear Cropping of Dogs

Once again The College of Veterinarians of British Columbia seeks to prohibit veterinarians from performing cosmetic cropping of ears for all dogs within B.C., supporting the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s (CVMA) position on the ear cropping of dogs.

This by-law change would interfere with the right where veterinarian and client work together for the betterment of the dog.

In order for this by-law change to take place one must study the colleges role and list of Duties. Located in their by-laws under Duties and objectives it clearly states in “section 3. (1) In carrying out its objects, the college must, (a) protect the public interest, and (b) exercise its powers and discharge its responsibilities under this Act in the public interest.” This by-law is going against the public interest (1).

A by-law that would prohibit a Veterinarian from performing Ear Cropping is an abusive use of power that is not going unnoticed. CBC’s airing of Barking Mad (2) looked into the CVMA’s role not so long ago, uncovering that the unnecessary testing and the over vaccinating of our pets is also established by our CVMA, forcing our provincial Veterinarian Associations to follow the guidelines in order to operate without, prejudice whether they believe in them or not. (3).

Another example of the Canadian Veterinarian Medical Association's mandates was the removal of all teachings of tail docking. Thus, young veterinarians who wished to be educated on this procedure were deprived of this option in the early 1980's. Following this CVMA recommendation Veterinary Medical Associations soon removed the practice from their college curriculums. This without notification to the public or its future colleges. Ear cropping has been self-taught amongst the Veterinary field.

One might challenge that the only motivation for some veterinarians who wish to discontinue this procedure is that they are usually unable to perform it successfully and that aftercare is considered onerous and therefore financially unprofitable. It also appears that the CVMA wants to dictate policy, what the veterinarian can and cannot do, which may be politically driven. If the Veterinary schools were allowed to open the doors and have docking and cropping taught, many of our historical purebred breeds would be saved and preserved for our future generations. I’m sure that if the choice was presented without facing ridicule or banishment, a skilled Veterinarian would volunteer as a qualified instructor.

Ear cropping is a simple procedure, and only takes 30 minutes. Do the surgery in the morning and puppy is sent home in the afternoon. When properly performed, there is no more pain than a spay or neuter. In fact, the ear leather at eight weeks is so fine they hardly even realize it's been done; healing time is minimal with lifetime benefits.

Ear cropping is far from being an unnecessary procedure especially carried out in cases of injury or for medical reasons. Some dog owners and their veterinarians emphasize that ear cropping provides the dog a benefit by reducing ear infections while improving the hearing. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim other than the knowledge and opinions from some our reputable Veterinarians who have great success with ear cropping (4) and the hundreds of thousands of cropped eared pets living today. There also is no evidence that supports the claims of having detrimental effects, if this were true than there would be countless reports on dogs suffering as a result of ear cropping being performed, animal rights would be jumping all over this. So with little or no scientific evidence to support either side's claim, one would have to look at the animals that have these surgeries performed, and the knowledge of a Veterinarian that has performed these surgeries as well as the owners and breeders that care for them.

Research shows that countries that have prohibited ear cropping such as those in Europe, and Australia and New Zealand are not only struggling to save certain breeds (5) but have also have been able to find a loop hole in their kennel club's by-laws to allow Cropped and Docked dogs to compete once again in their show rings, only proving that the prohibition on docking and cropping was not what was best for certain breeds. (6) .

In the past several years, veterinary regulators in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, PEI, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia have passed by-laws that prohibit their members from performing ear cropping; Newfoundland is the first to introduce legislation changes to ban both procedures and individuals can actually be charged under the animal cruelty act of Newfoundland. As a result certain breeds have started to disappear. (7)

In Canada, the CVMA has attempted to push their views about docking and cropping to the purebred dog community. Various Provincial Veterinary Associations have consistently pressured breed associations and kennel clubs to change breed standards and their stance on these elective surgeries, based on opinion and inconclusive research. (8) “Therefore, although it is widely believed that pendulous ears increase the risk of otitis externa, there is a lack of strong scientific evidence establishing and quantifying the strength of this link.”

WE NEED TO CHANGE things so that the Veterinarian and future Veterinarians have the right to be trained/continue to practice these beneficial elective surgeries.
