Comment now on GMO food labeling

If you have a view about how food labeling should be carried out in the United States, now is the time to speak up. Through July 3, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking final comments on its proposed system for disclosing the presence of food and ingredients that came from genetically modified crops. (Read the technical details on the USDA website.) Here at the Cornell Alliance for Science we believe that a transparent effective labeling regime needs strong public input from the pro-science community. Please submit your comments here and we'll pass them on to the USDA before the July 3 deadline.

As always, the devil is in the details. Here are five key issues to consider in your comments:

1. Safety. A worldwide scientific consensus agrees that foods and ingredients that come from GM crops are as safe as those from conventionally bred crops. Any labeling standard should not mislead consumers into thinking otherwise. The USDA proposes to use the term “bioengineered" (BE), rather than negative terms like GMO, and nonthreatening symbols that do not evoke fear. Comments are being sought on the proposed symbols, the term "bioengineered," and the disclosure language.

2. Transparency. The USDA needs to set a threshold level beneath which disclosure is not required. It has proposed three options: a) inadvertent or technically unavoidable, and no more than 5% of the specific ingredient by weight; b) inadvertent or technically unavoidable, and no more than 0.9% of the specific ingredient by weight; and c) total amount of BE ingredients no more than 5% of the total weight of the product. Which do you support?

3. Convenience. The law allows companies to disclose BE ingredients on a label via one of three options: words, a symbol, and scannable QR codes. The USDA wants comments on a proposed fourth option — a text message delivered to a consumer's phone — as well as where and at what size disclosure should appear on a label.

4. Definition. In keeping with the language of the law, products created through pioneering editing tools like CRISPR would not be disclosed if the end result mimics conventional breeding or could potentially be “found in nature.” The USDA seeks comments on the definition of “conventional breeding” and "found in nature."

5. Disclosure. The USDA is deciding if highly refined products like sucrose, dextrose, cornstarch, high-fructose corn syrup and vegetable oils, which are produced from GM crops but biologically and chemically identical to those made from non-GM crops, should be disclosed. This decision will have disclosure implications for a wide range of foods.

Order Financial Audit of AEP

Kentucky Power customers pay the second highest rates in America. Tariffs and Surcharges are approximately 25% of our electric bills, plus we have a 30.19% poverty rate that puts a huge burden on Kentucky Power customers. As AEP continues to make poor business decisions, they rely on recovering that cost off of the backs of the poverty stricken and the economically challenged communities of Southeastern Kentucky. The unethical business model that is establishing precedent by AEP needs to be investigated and eliminated now before it provides more opportunity for devastation to Appalachian Families.

Scrap the Home Report

Having bought a house based on a Home Report, the surveyor missed approx. £40k worth essential repairs, to make the house wind and water tight, and over valued the property £40,000.

We believe there are many similar cases of faulty or negligent Home Reports across Scotland and believe that the current system is failing house buyers and costing people thousands in unexpected repair bills, not to mention the stress and financial worry associated with a legal battle.

Save the Jersey breed!

To: AJCA Board of Directors

From: Concerned AJCA members

The discussion of outside breed influence has been a hot topic for some time within this Association. It's obvious that the heterosis affect from non Jersey genetics is having undue, and scientifically distorting influence on the genomic evaluations of our cattle. The BBR results confirm Holstein DNA is corrupting the purity of our breed and distorting the true genetic superiority of the Jersey breed.

The Jersey breed has seen tremendous growth the past 10 years. This growth has been for good reason. The Jersey cow is the most efficient converter of feed into milk; the Jersey cow has very few calving problems; she has little to no fresh cow issues, and has great reproductive performance.

By allowing animals with a BBR of less than 94% to be given a JPI rating and ranking, publicly is a disservice to real Jersey breeders. Notwithstanding that we realize 94% is an arbitrary cutoff, but also agreeing with the consensus of professionals that this number fairly represents “True” Jersey genetics, we accept that number and recommend the AJCA Board also use this guideline percentage.

We most ardently recommend that animals with less than a BBR of 94% not be given a JPI, and frankly there is question as to why these animals should be entered in the herd book of the AJCA.

If the crossbreds are given a JPI or an XPI number as some have suggested, the marketplace will negatively sort real Jersey genetics and we will have lost our breed. The future of the Jersey cow and our Association is now in your hands. We urge you to take bold steps and not let short term Association profits distract you from your duty to preserve the integrity of the Jersey Breed.

Save the Jersey breed as we know it today.

Unfair Translink $5.00 add fare for YVR employees

When Translink first started the Canada Line, there was a promise made to YVR employees and staff. That the $5.00 add fare would not be charged to YVR airport staff, but only it's travelling passengers.

Now that Translink has gone strictly to Compass Card, Translink is now implementing the $5.00 add fare and forcing YVR employees to purchase a 10 pack of 2 zone fare saver tickets for $40.00 (was $31.50).
We find this totally unfair to all YVR employees. The Magenta Card Program was implemented for YVR Employees to use as a Compass card because it contains a magnetic stripe cancelling the add fare.

Furthermore. we find Translink's statement to be false when they state that they are 'no longer continuing on with the Magenta Card program', when there is a number of YVR Employees which are using the card currently. Translink can not play both sides of the fence. Either it's one program for ALL YVR Employees or none at all.

Fix the Spin Bikes at Push Fresh Meadows

At PUSH Fitness in Fresh Meadows there have been a number of near miss incidents including one on June 16, 2015 during the 6:30 pm Spin class, in which a pedal broke off during a member's ride. Though the member was not injured, it could have been catastrophic. Members and instructors have repeatedly reported broken bikes, as well as other less severe conditions, to management. Response has been far too slow and incomplete.

As the PUSH Brand expands there are 2 new clubs getting state of the art equipment and services while the Fresh Meadow location deteriorates.

Because of the poor condition of the Spin Bikes, those members who regularly attend Spin classes at PUSH, Fresh Meadows are at risk of physical injury because many of the bikes have the following defects: lose pedals or seats, broken clips or straps, broken or stripped adjustments, imbalanced frames, and poor resistance. These conditions contribute to a diminished fitness experience for members who are often being forced to miss a class because the available bikes are broken.

It is a reasonable consumer expectation that members should have bikes in good working condition to avoid potential harm and serious injury. As a provider of fitness services, the utmost priority for PUSH must be the provision a safe and clean environment and access to well maintained equipment for its members.

We implore you to take immediate action to repair, replace or provide routine maintenance to the 17 bikes at Push Fitness, Fresh Meadows to prevent actionable injury to members, improve member experience and to maintain member loyalty.

Keep Natwest Barton Open

NatWest have announced the closure of the Natwest Branch in Barton upon Humber. They tell us that 'only 70 people use the branch on a regular weekly basis', and that we can now use alternatives such as online and mobile banking, and can use the Post Office for some services. However, we know that Barton on Humber NatWest is a busy local branch that serves the town and its surrounding villages well (a population of well over 15,000), and we need to keep our branch!

Not everyone wants to bank online, and many people value the great face to face service that the branch offers. We believe that NatWest needs to be part of our growing town so we need to convince them that the branch has the support to stay open.

The bank has been there for over 100 years and is part of our community, and used by well over 70 people a week - we all know that! NatWest plan to offer a mobile branch that will visit Barton twice a week for 45 minutes each time - but we need longer hours than that! We need to keep our great branch of NatWest open!

Stop Price Fixing of Canadian Dairy Products

Through a combination of a government-mandated cartel, and restrictions on imports of dairy products, Canadian dairy producers have used our government to create policies that forcibly transfer hard earned dollars from the Canadian consumer into the pockets of dairy producers.

Canadian dairy prices are consistently the highest in the world due to a lack of competition, and the stifling of the free market.

According to The U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price of dairy fell over 20% from June 2008 to June 2009, while Canadian prices increased.

Travelling to the United States to find a deal on dairy products is discouraged as well, as Canadians can only enter Canada with $20 worth of milk products.

Fortis 2 tier protest

Fortis BC recently changed its rates to a 2 tier system, whereby those who consume over 1600 kWh of energy per two month period are charged a higher rate. This has had a major financial impact on many rural customers who do not have access to gas service to mitigate their electricity usage, and therefore forces them to pay the higher rate for their energy needs.

It also punishes the elderly and low-income residents who cannot afford the new rates or the costs of energy-saving upgrades, as well as renters whose units only provide electricity.
