Chapel Hill Needs a Real Tree Protection Ordinance

Local residents were shocked and appalled at the recent clear-cutting of the site of the Chapel Hill Retirement Residence on Estes Drive, the Merin Road Community on Homestead Road, Carraway Village on Eubanks Road, and the various development sites in Ephesus-Fordham. Many citizens of Chapel Hill believe that the Town’s Tree Ordinance prevents total loss of canopy trees, especially rare and specimen trees, but that is not the case.

There are major problems with the Tree Ordinance as it is currently written and interpreted. First, in evaluating proposed developments, Town staff regularly interpret the Ordinance so as to equate newly planted saplings with mature trees in calculating the requirements for tree cover. Replacing future canopy coverage can take decades; planting a spindly sapling is not a substitute for a 100 foot oak tree. Canopy trees are identified and then allowed to be cut. Second, violations of the Ordinance are subject only to token fines. Based on these deficiencies, we petition Town Council to revise the Tree Ordinance to achieve the following goals:

WHY SIGN THIS PETITION?
Rise Gold, a junior mining company with questionable experience, wants to re-open the Idaho-Maryland Mine in Grass Valley, CA.

Our Nevada County Supervisors will vote on it as early as 2021. Residents and businesses think it's a really bad idea.

Here's what's at stake:
*Wrecks our neighborhoods with drilling and blasting for 80 years
*Pollutes our air with rock crushing, loading, and truck hauling
*Devours our power using 12% of Nevada County’s consumption annually
*Erases our County’s plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions
*Drains our water using South Fork Wolf Creek as a storm drain
*Reduces property values and threatens 300+ private wells

Sign now and share it with your friends!

The fine print:
-	We will only share this petition and your information/comments with the
Board.

Monson Selectmen: Going Solar Isn't Green If You Cut Down Tons of Trees

Residents of Monson:

The town just received correspondence that Wilbraham Road is AGAIN in the process of coming out of 61A Forestry to prepare for a 2-megawatt commercial farm.

Watch the 9/26/17 Selectmen mtg, starting at 1:14:18 via the MPACT link above. My father and I both speak at the end.

I know this whole solar topic is confusing. It's been a rollercoaster for us all. Here's what's been going on:

Since January 2017, these 22.6 acres have been under a very choppy process of land-use conversion. Steps were initiated to remove this land from the state's 61A Forestry program to prepare for solar construction. Then in April, while Selectmen were originally considering whether to purchase the land (and land appraisals were being conducted), the land was withdrawn from that process, keeping it under 61A Forestry. In July, the landowners submitted a forest cutting plan to the state for the objective of "long-term forest management", and substantial timber harvesting took place in August. This month, steps have been taken in an effort to again remove this land from the state's 61A Forestry program in preparation for construction of commercial solar.

In short, the future of this solar project soon lies in the hands of our Selectmen. They must decide:

- To exercise the town's first right to purchase the land and keep it under continued 61 protection status (no solar farm),
OR
- To waive the town's right to buy the land and in doing so, officially allow construction of this solar farm to begin.

We continue to say: Going solar isn't green if you cut down tons of trees. This project just does not make environmental sense.

OUR COLLECTIVE STRENGTH is in YOUR SINGLE VOICE. Please SIGN this electronic petition and SHARE it/TAG others who live in Monson.

Even if you signed the original paper petition from earlier this year, please DO sign this one as well. It's new. Also, each person should sign individually--every head counts!

From the very bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.

Massachusetts Strong: Pass Strong Climate Legislation in 2020 to Build Back Better!

The coronavirus pandemic has made it clear: legislators must listen to the science and move proactively to prevent disaster. Massachusetts politicians must match their extraordinary leadership on COVID-19 with unprecedented climate action to protect future generations and give us the financial security we need today.

We call on the legislature to pass legislation in 2020 that:
1. Commits Massachusetts to zero greenhouse gas emissions by or before 2050, with 50% reduction by 2030.
2. Funds our transition to a green economy with corporate polluter fees along with investments and rebates that give money directly to low and moderate-income people.
3. Protects low-income people and people of color.

Worthing to be Zero Carbon by 2030

Worthing Borough Council must emulate other local councils and declare a climate emergency. We have an opportunity to be one of the leaders on environmental issues.

All governments and councils (national, regional and local) have a duty to limit the negative impacts of Climate Breakdown, and local councils that recognise this should not wait for their national governments to change their policies. It is important for the residents of Worthing and the UK that communities commit to carbon neutrality as quickly as possible.

The consequences of global temperature rising above 1.5°C are so severe that preventing this from happening must be humanity’s number one priority.

Bold climate action can deliver economic benefits in terms of new jobs, economic savings and market opportunities (as well as improved well-being for people in Worthing, the region and worldwide).

Don't Build Houses on the former Parkway School Site

At a council meeting on 16 December, Newcastle City Council’s ruling Lib Dem executive approved plans for a mini council estate to be built on the former Parkway School site.

When local Conservatives warned people that Liberal Democrats had plans to build houses on former school sites last year, Lib Dems said we were lying. Now, local people know the truth.

A cross party campaign has now been established to fight these plans.

Many local residents have expressed disappointment that Lib Dems have chosen to ignore the findings of the consultation the council carried out in 2008.

The preference of the vast majority of local residents was for the site to be kept for education use or open space improvements, why then would the council offer the land for social housing?

When challenged by local councillor, Marc Donnelly, at the meeting, the Leader of Council would not even agree to take notice of the original consultation and instead insisted that residents would again be consulted. This is not good enough.

Together, we can fight to ensure that the council listens to the views of local residents about land that we - not the council - own.

Ballina's beaches and waterways have been littered with debris & large logs from a previous cyclone (Debbie) since 31st March 2017.
East Coast Lows (ECL's) have also damaged our coastline following cyclone Debbie's brute force which saw many Queensland and NSW coastal towns battered by these events. It has been over four months and our beaches and waterways are still littered with logs and other debris which is giving our beautiful town a tarnished look.
Ballina Council dose not see it as a commitment in their budget to keep our beaches and waterways clean. At a recent Council meeting Ballina Council voted 5-4 AGAINST cleaning our beaches and waterways stating, and I quote, "Nature will take its coarse" and "there is no debris on our beaches" At Ballina Councils General meeting on 24th Aug. Councillors by way of a "vote" agreed to adopt a policy to adopt a policy to look at ways of keeping beaches and waterways clean. If Councillors interest in this motion was anything to go by, it could be years before anything is accomplished by Council. SO YOUR SUPPORT is needed to keep pressure on Council to prioritise the clean up.
Ballina has always boasted its clean pristine beaches and waterways. Tourists and locals have been put at risk with large logs and tree branches littering our beaches and waterways. They are a health as well as a safety risk to all who use our once beautiful beaches. Some residents and possibly tourists have taken it upon themselves to move logs and debris off the beaches to the foot of the sand dunes, but the debris is still visible and a real eyesore.
