International Day of Family Remittances Endorsement

The International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) aims at recognizing the fundamental contribution of migrant workers to the wellbeing of their communities of origin. The Day was unanimously proclaimed by all 176 Member States of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in February 2015. Since then, the IDFR has received much encouragement and support from the public and private sectors, and development organizations.
Proclaiming an International Day of Family Remittances represents an opportunity for institutions to recognize the efforts of migrants globally and strengthen current cross-industry partnerships and create new synergies among sectors to promote the development impact of remittances worldwide and join together to help reach the ultimate goal of making migration for future generations more of a choice than a necessity.

Prepare the Grid for Severe Space Weather

In 2008, the National Research Council of the National Academies released a workshop report entitled - Space Weather Events - Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts
(http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=12507). In this report many different researchers from a wide range of industries and academic backgrounds, discussed the impact that severe solar weather - in particular powerful Earth facing X-Class Solar Flares and Corononal Mass Ejections could have on Earth.

They noted that the impact could be catastrophic, given the interconnectedness of modern civilization and our dependence on electrical power. The major risks that were highlighted in this report, are associated with the potential of a single strong or series of strong coronal mass ejections, to cripple the electrical power grids of many nations - particularly the USA (which is the country the report is focused upon). Millions of people could be affected within a matter of hours and days of the Earth being struck by a powerful CME - as in the case of the Carrington Event of 1859 and the CME which affected Quebec in 1989.

The current solar cycle, number 24 is not particularly strong. It is thought that most significant space weather occurs during a strong solar cycle or near the solar maximum. But the Carrington event occurred during a weak solar cycle. It is not unreasonable to assume that severe solar weather could occur any time. Scientists are now predicting a peak in solar activity sometime in 2013. But between now and then it seems likely that the sun will increase in activity.

Should a major solar flare/CME be aimed in our direction, Earth would be exceptionally vulnerable. The above report acknowledges that it is not difficult or expensive to fit transformers with appropriate devices, which prevent transformer meltdown, in the case of the power grid being overloading by energy from a major CME. The lead in time for the manufacture of large transformers is 12-24 months normally and would be impossible to assess if the grid were shut down. It is unclear and uncertain if any government in the world has taken these preventative steps.

I urge you to join this cause and take action to bring this issue to the attention of both the public, media and your government. If you know how to create a website, please do so. If you know how to blog about this, please do so. If you know how to read, please read the report. Please let others know about this issue and this cause. Lets get it off a touchy feely feel good cause page and into the real world.

Preparation of this kind is critical to the survival of our species. We are like children coming of age in the Milky Way and at some stage, we will have to learn think differently about our place in the cosmos and our relationship with the Lord of Fire.

John Baird, the Foreign Minister, who has openly advocated democratic revolution in Iran since closing Canada’s embassy there last year, said in a statement the election was “effectively meaningless” because only “regime-friendly candidates” were allowed in the race, and none “represents a real alternative for Iranian voters.”

“The person tagged to replace [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad will simply be another of [Supreme Leader] Ayatollah Khamenei’s puppets in the tragic and dangerous pantomime that is life for all Iranians,” he said.

Urging the Governor to act in maintaining the Integrity of British Gibraltar Territorial Waters - Defenders of Gibraltar

Since the tearing up of the 1999 Fishing Agreement, there has been a clear lack of action taken by the Royal Gibraltar Police and the Royal Navy in enforcing Gibraltarian Law and tackling the completely illegal incursions by the Guardia Civil in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.

It is generally understood that this is mainly to do with the UKs wish to avoid any sort of political confrontation with a fellow EU member or NATO ally.

We, the Gibraltarian people, are fed up with the constant aggressive and belligerent behaviour of our neighbour and the constant appeasement and inaction by those required by our constitution to defend us and Gibraltars territorial and political integrity. This includes the complete lack of any political will to tackle the issues which constitute oppression by the Kingdom of Spain towards Gibraltar and its people.

We are British Citizens. If this happened in waters off the UK, the response would be different. This is where the Governors attitude is wrong. The waters around Gibraltar are British - if you do not enforce it as such over time we will lose it.

A Petition Against Four More Years of War

We object to the United States proposal for Afghanistan being presented this week to NATO ministers.

It is not a peace plan. It is a plan for four more years of combat by US and NATO forces.

It is not a plan for US or Western troop withdrawals but for further occupation. It is a proposal to gradually lessen Western casualties and lessen Western visibility while transitioning to Western-financed, Western-armed, and Western-advised Afghan army combat in a civil conflict. It is a plan for long-term Western military bases.

It is not a plan to stop al Qaeda or terrorists from attacking Western targets. There are virtually no al Qaeda left in Afghanistan. The most recent terrorist attacks on America have been inspired by our deepening wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In seeking to save our military reputation, we all but assure future threats against Western targets. CIA officials even describe Yemen’s al Qaeda cell as more dangerous than al Qaeda in Pakistan. [NYT, Oct. 18, 2010]

It pre-empts the Administration’s own proposal for a full “review” of Afghan policy in December. The timing instead is aimed at shoring up a faltering Western alliance.

The central proposal--to increase the scale of the Afghan army and police in order to prop up a corrupt Kabul regime--will never work without a parallel cease-fire, deep institutional reform, enforceable human rights, and peace-keeping arrangements with leadership by neutral countries.

The current expenditure of over $100 billion American dollars per year for Afghanistan could be spent on medical care for 15 million veterans, or 15 million college scholarships, or 1.8 million new teachers, or 72 million installations of renewable energy for American homes.

Save Darfur, Save Sudan, Save Lives!

Their presence is felt even before they are seen. Heralding their coming is the low hum of helicopters. This sound moves legs; villagers dash into the forest, leaving behind everything, taking along all who they can.

Then the helicopter gun ship arrives, strafing the village, destroying houses and killing any who did not leave the village. Then you see them, the Devils on horse backs. They come galloping out of the forest. They finish the killing, they rape women, they make the village uninhabitable and they take bounty from the village. This is a Janjaweed attack. This is the Sudan genocide. This is the massacre that led to the death of some 500,000 people.

Why the killings? Who’s being killed? Who are the Janjaweed?

Sudan is the largest country in Africa, covering a land space of 2,505,813 sq.km. It lies south of Egypt, east of Chad and north of Kenya. Its population of 43,939,598 is made up Arabs and Africans, nomads and farmers, Muslims, Christians and Animists. Sudan's capital is in Khartoum. This ethnically diverse country went through 50 years of civil war, famine and human rights violations. These sufferings were due to the British undemocratic passage of governance to the foreign Arabs in 1956. The discovery of oil in the southern part of Sudan also aided the Civil war. The government was fanatically Islamic and it ruled by Sharia, the traditional Muslim Law Code. Forceful imposition of this law code on the south of Sudan in 1985 led to an uprising by the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). A successful revolt by the SPLM led to the installation of a democratically oriented, but still religious, government. There was hope for a stable Sudan.

In 1989, as peace agreements were being consolidated between the democratic Islamic government and the SPLM and just as the Sharia Law was being frozen, General Omar al-Bashir led a successful coup against the government and upon his imposition, he returned the authoritarian form of Islamic government, including the Sharia law. He then declared a Jihad, a holy war, against the non-Muslim and the democratic African Muslim people of Sudan.

At first glance, this situation looks like a battle fueled by religious zeal. This however is a typical case of 'looks might be deceiving'. This is a war that pits the Arabic Muslim against the African, dark-skinned, Muslims and non-Muslims of Sudan. It is the massacre of the sedentary, tribal and agricultural society that embraces diversity; the type of diversity frowned upon by the ethnic fanaticism of the Arabic government. This fanaticism has plunged the Middle East for years.

The Janjaweed, in plain, simple terms, are government hired assassins and eradicators. They are bandits who are turned into “government sanctioned and controlled bandits”. Their job is simple and deadly. Invade the village, kill the men, rape the women, destroy the houses and take everything your heart desires from the village. Although, the government of Omar has denied involvement, aid and support of the Janjaweed raids, it is an overt lie that is unbelievable. It is obvious that the Janjaweed, who are Arab nomads, are not capable of flying attack helicopters. Why are they being used? The Janjaweed are cheap, in fact, they are priceless. After each raid, the Janjaweed take the villagers' lands, their farm produce, and their animals. To go straight to the point, the Janjaweed, after each raid, take all they can from the raided villages. The government just has to provide the weapons and nothing more. For a government that is known for its unwillingness to share the country's wealth or even use the money on the country, the Janjaweed and their moneyless price is just the right tool.

In 1994, in another part of Africa, over 800,000 people were killed over a feud for power between Hutu and the Tutsi. This is became known as the Rwanda Genocide. After this genocide, the world, as a community, promised “NEVER AGAIN”. We said never again will we fail in our responsibility to save lives, never again will we watch genocide go down and do nothing about. In the year 2004, our promise of never again became 'AGAIN AND AGAIN'. We failed to act. We failed to acknowledge the critical situation in Darfur. The world human crisis representative, The United Nations, failed in its responsibility. They wasted precious time determining whether or not the massacre in Darfur was genocide. They said there was no evidence to support a genocide in Darfur and held on to the belief that the crisis was “blown out of proportion”. While they deliberated in their comfortable chairs, under peaceful conditions, 2.5 million people lost their homes and an estimated 500,000 people died and yet, they said this was no genocide.

They had the opportunity to send a clear message to the Khartoum government. They, however, chose to approve the deployment of more African Union monitoring forces to Darfur. These forces are under-armed, under-funded and unprepared for the crisis in Darfur. They, the UN, failed to issue an arms embargo ensuring the Sudan government had no access to weapons. They failed to inflict any real pressure on the government of Sudan. They passed on their authority to impose an oil embargo on Sudan. Am embargo that would have gotten, not only Sudan to act, but it will have also prompted swift response from Sudan's biggest oil trade partner, China.

On the 9th of January 2011, Sudan will once again be given the chance to rest and be free of all worries. On this much awaited day, Southern Sudan will conduct a referendum to decide whether or not it should split from Northern Sudan and become an independent state. If this referendum should fail, the likelihood that Sudan will return to a civil war is very high. It becomes critically important, then, that action be taken now to see to the success of this referendum. A wise saying says “to be forewarned is to be forearmed” and yet another one says that “experience is the best teacher”. We have the experience; we have seen what lack of action on the part of the world means for the people of Sudan. We have enough warnings from the past to arm us against the implications of our inaction. We can, we should and we must let our experience serve as the warning that will arm us ready for action. We must do something, everything we can, to see to it that the people of Sudan die no more. It is our duty and obligation to them

No more should we rely on the UN to do anything about this matter. It is our responsibility to act. We can make a difference. You can help save lives in Sudan. The situation in Darfur is another holocaust. This is your chance to, not only say NEVER AGAIN, but to act on your promise. This is your chance to say 'enough is enough, Sudan is dying, I have to act and act fast'. You can help give Sudan the chance to breathe the air of freedom, life, liberty and peace. Do not wait for the chance to speak. Help create the chance by speaking out. Raise your voice for the people of Sudan. Do something now. Do more than nothing today.

China should Respect Philippine Sovereignty in Scarborough Shoal

April 8, 2012 - a Philippine Navy vessel observed eight Chinese fishing vessels anchored inside the Scarborough Shoal (Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag Shoal) lagoon while it was patrolling the area. The cutter BRP Gregorio del Pilar was deployed. Two days later, the Del Pilar sent a boarding team to inspect the fishing boats. They found illegally collected corrals, giant clams, and live sharks inside the boats -- all illegal cargo under Philippine law.

Before the team from BRP Del Pilar could arrest the fishermen with illegal cargo, two Chinese surveillance ships moved into positions between the Del Pilar and the fishing boats, causing a standoff.

Since then, Chinese navy ships have fired on and harassed unarmed Philippine fishing boats and exploration vessels, forcing them to withdraw. Chinese navy ships have dropped steel posts and navigation buoys with Chinese markings in the water.
