Riverside Park is an expansive open space surrounded by apartments, walking paths and the Maribyrnong River and allowing dogs off-leash will help to bring a positive and vibrant atmosphere to this relatively quiet and underutilized open park space.

Save Kong's Market!

Issue: Proprietors of Kong's Market, 400 26th Ave., Santa Cruz Facing Immediate Eviction.

Overview: Everybody has their neighborhood corner market, and ours here in Pleasure Point is Kong's on 26th Avenue. The current proprietors, Sang and his wife, have been here for the past 24 of the 62 years it has been in business. Sang's family has become part of our neighborhood family. We've grown up together, watched each other's kids grow up, attended weddings, graduations, recitals, and even been there through periods of loss. It's not just a business, it's a family.

Services: Kong's Market has been a family-run, neighborhood grocery store on 26th Ave., Santa Cruz since 1954. Kong's is legendary amongst surfers, residents, and tourists alike for the eggrolls which are handmade on the premises daily. Kong's is truly part of the local community, stocking local and organic products, reasonably priced staples, and special ordered items at customer request. Most recently, the proprietors added a hot grill, serving fresh and organic burgers, breakfast burritos, and other hot foods.

Sang of Kong's Market is facing immediate eviction by the landlord, leaving the future of this icon and vital neighborhood service uncertain.

Relevance to Community: Kong's is closely integrated with the neighborhood community, open convenient hours, and in easy walking distance for neighborhood residents. The proprietors have proven themselves to be part of the community. Residents still speak of the time, after the Loma Prieta earthquake, when the neighborhood was without power or water for days. Kong's opened its doors and allowed residents to take supplies on the honor system. Sang and his wife are always quick to make contributions to neighborhood celebrations.

In these times of rapid development locally owned businesses are being squeezed out of the community. It is time to stand up for your neighborhood and protect this local treasure and neighborhood landmark which has been serving our neighborhood community for 62 years.

Save Creve Coeur Park

Pacific Heights Realty wants to rezone more than 200 acres of land beside Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park for industrial use, big box retail, flex industrial space, office space, and possible residential space.

We OPPOSE this development as it will disrupt our peaceful Creve Coeur Park - the place where we picnic and play with our children. This is NOT the place for urban sprawl.

Sidewalks and Drainage for Lake Stickney Dr.

The construction of an infiltration trench along Lake Stickney Drive (LS Dr.) and 17th Avenue would create a safe walking surface if paved with a pervious cement surface. A walkway would greatly increase the safety of pedestrians and possibly allow for bike traffic as well. It would also eliminate the need to do further excavation to add a sidewalk.

Infiltration Trenches are recognized as highly effective and relatively simple methods of reducing nonpoint pollution. A recent study carried out over 4 years determined that an infiltration trench reduced suspended solids, dissolved organics, road oil & grease, lead, zinc, phosphorus, and nitrogen by 82-90%.

Increased Traffic along Lake Stickney Drive endangers pedestrians:
The Lake Stickney Gap CDP (census designated place) is growing rapidly with significant increases in traffic. The 2010 census determined the LS Gap population density is the 9th highest CDP in the state of Washington at 4964 persons per square mile.

There are many sections of LS Dr. and 17th Ave. where there is no shoulder between the road and the ditch. Many people walk their dogs, run or ride bicycles along here and have no way to avoid aggressive or inattentive drivers. Even the ditches are a poor choice in some places because the county has recently dug them much deeper due to increased water flow.

A safe walkway along Lake Stickney would improve the safety of children commuting from the neighborhood to Odyssey Elementary along LS Dr. and 17th Ave. It would also increase neighborhood interaction by increasing the number of people walking and socializing.

Nonpoint Pollution from Impervious Surfaces and Storm Sewers:
The measured phosphorous in Lake Stickney has been increasing at least since 1996. Higher phosphate levels stimulate algae growth and may have a negative impact on fish and other aquatic life. Green algae scum also decreases the lake’s appearance and could reduce property values.

New developments built along Lake Stickney Drive (LS Dr.) and connecting streets have installed detention vaults and storm sewers as prescribed by the county. Detention vaults reduce phosphate loads by only 6-24% and can actually increase nitrogen levels if the vault sediment is anoxic. Discharging them into an infiltration trench would reduce the total pollution entering the lake.

The new storm sewers have increased the water flow and filtration load on the remaining ditches and the inevitable progression of new developments will result in the elimination of all filtration for water entering the lake. Lake Stickney eventually discharges into Lake Washington and Puget Sound and will also contribute to the nonpoint pollution of these bodies of water.

Converting our existing ditches along LS Dr. and 17th Avenue into infiltration trenches is the most cost effective method of maintaining and improving their ability to preserve the water quality of Lake Stickney. If nothing is done this opportunity will be lost by the continued extension of the storm sewers one development at a time.

Save Kingston Park Beach Kiosk/Cafe

The renowned Kingston Park Kiosk/cafe located on the Kingston Park beachfront, adjacent to the caravan park, has long been a community hub for the area.

A picturesque environment for a coffee, breakfast or lunch for locals, visitors, caravaners and tradespeople working in the area. It has also been an important meeting place after walking dogs on the beach.

The kiosk closed in May last year as a result of the leaseholder and the council failing to reach agreement on a new lease.

Over the last few months we have been endeavouring to work with Council to reopen the kiosk- offering something the area sorely lacks, a local funky cafe.
We have been advised that the kiosk is located on an SA water easement and that SA Water will not allow the kiosk to operate and want the building removed. We have discovered that this is not the case and SA Water approvals are in place.

Council have also advised that the building is not in a suitable condition to operate as a kiosk. We believe that with some maintenance and minor works it can be brought into compliance.

Council plans to build a new kiosk/cafe within the caravan Park as part of the refurbishment of that area.
We truly believe that locals and beach-goers will not be inclined to go into the Caravan Park to go to a kiosk/cafe. To lose the current facility is to lose an important part of our neighbourhood.

We urge you to sign this petition which will be presented to the City Of Holdfast Bay Council and will hopefully encourage them to refurbish the existing building and bring it back in to operation.

PLEASE NOTE: We understand that the Council are reluctant to recognise petitions that do not carry a street address of the respondent.

Stop the Threat to Island Gardens Conservation Area and Greenwich Foot Tunnel

*PA/12/02784 "BUILD A FOUR STOREY BUILDING TO PROVIDE A NEW COMMUNITY CENTRE" on Calders Wharf.

*PA/12/02785 - conservation area consent: TO KNOCK DOWN BOUNDARY WALL.

Petition to object to the threat of two Four storey interlinked buildings of 26 Privately owned Luxury Apartments to be built at Calders Wharf in Island Gardens Conservation Area, which will ruin listed Island Gardens Park & overshadow the historical listed Greenwich Foot tunnel rotunda and ruin the World Heritage site & buffer views FOREVER!

We do not object for the single storey Community Centre being regenerated. There is no need for 3 floors of 26 private luxury apartments on top.

Telford Homes Plc have prepared plans and have entered into "partnership" with EEH to rebuild the existing single storey Calders Wharf Community Centre in return for ALL 26 of the PRIVATE luxury apartments, (including ground floor duplex with private gardens) with apartments which they intend to build on top. There will be NO social / affordable housing.

The TH Plc rep stated they cannot offer ANY social / affordable housing because they have to make a profit to be sustainable.

In Christchurch Estate Management Board minutes dated March 2013 EEH rep said that residents do not have a right to a view of the Thames.

So its profits for THP shareholders VS the expense of our environment & heritage (& a further strain on our stressed infrastructure!)

The EEH rep stated the users requested adult facilities for this centre & gave the example of Zumba & how they need to accommodate these adults simultaneously with the children's Rainbow Playgroup. Surely these adults can stroll to the new Asda centre within walking distance? Or even use the purpose built fitness studios & facilities at the nearby Tiller Leisure centre?

Why are EEH spearheading with TH Plc without even considering alternatives such as grants or partnerships or community involvement & suggestions in a public meeting? There won't be any social housing? And the community space provided will be insignificant compared to the private ownership.

Consultations are low profile & take place during children's holidays when people are away, at extremely short notice, working hours & at impossible times e.g. 1-5pm!

No amount of work will enable the block of flats to be sympathetic to the surrounding area. Trees will be removed as part of the planning application & when the remaining ones shed their leaves for most of the year the building will be exposed from all around. They keep saying trees will hide the building which is completely untrue as the single storey is visible! This site is in a prominent position right on the riverbank.

TH Plc ALSO plan to knock down the park boundary wall to open up the development to intrude on Island Gardens Park, whilst offering a communal garden open to the public with 24 hour access with no CCTV or security! This will be detrimental to the park.

Only two disabled parking bays will be provided. Saunders Ness Rd & Ferry Street will become even more congested. This may lead to the Community Centre becoming defunct as parents will not be able to drive to the centre. This will also lead to a decline in the centre being hired for functions, as will complaints from residents above due to noise, resulting in a decline in income. The EEH rep stated they cannot afford to repair or run the centre as it is, then how will they sustain it in the future?

LBTH states “Preserving & enhancing heritage assets as an important part of the history & uniqueness of the Isle of Dogs”, “Existing public open space will be protected” & “Access to the riverside parks & dockside areas will be protected & enhanced.” & “The Conservation Area belongs to its residents”.

Please lets set a precedence and not allow a private developer encroach on our park.

Please help us to protect OUR Conservation Area, listed park, Greenwich Foot tunnel & World Heritage Site.

Archers Lane sidewalk addition

On the evening of February 5, 2010, 15 year old Mairi-Caite Miller was struck by a car and tragically lost her life while walking along the side of the road on Archers Lane in Irmo. Our entire community is shaken and grieving this senseless tragedy. Please join us in prayer for the family of Mairi, her friends and all that have been affected by this great loss.

As five year residents of Archers Court, we have spoken to many, many residents who have had to quickly swerve while driving through the neighborhood to avoid a jogger, a walker, someone on a bike, or group of children who have no choice but to travel on a busy road with absolutely no sidewalks. Archers Lane is a busy road- filled with many curves, trees and other obstructions to vision for all drivers.
To make matters worse, non-residents use this road as a shortcut to and from Harbison - unfamiliar with the terrain and unfortunately, they are often speeding.

The installation of sidewalks will provide a safe way to travel the neighborhood. This must be done before another tragedy happens. For our residents, for our children and for Mairi-Caite.

Save Bondi Beach Cottage Daycare

Bondi Beach Cottage Day Care is closing.

This service is the only community daycare currently available in Bondi, and is integral to the Waverley Community. Its closure will also mean job losses and will affect over 200 families who currently use the service. It is a lovely childcare that we would also like to stay open for future families in the area- perhaps you and/or people you know.

If you believe:
1. Community services such as this are an essential part of Waverley,
2. The operation of a much-loved and popular service should continue , and/or
3. Are aware of the difficulty of finding affordable and good quality childcare,
please sign this petition to show your support for the services of BBC in the Waverley community.

Other information:
We would love all of you to sign this petition, but ESPECIALLY those of you who live, own or work locally.
PLEASE do include your address (residential, or business if you work in the area), otherwise your signature may be considered invalid by Council.
