Helaas...

Fables of the Green Forest back on TV

From 1978 to 1983 Dutch public TV network Tros broadcasted 49 of 52 episodes of anime series Fables of The Green Forest. We would like Tros to broadcast them again and, if possible, to release on DVD!

UPDATE: TROS announced that it will not broadcast this series again. TROS does not have the rights for DVD-release. They reside by the maker. The dutch broadcasters archive cannot tell me how to contact the maker and doesn't hold a copy of the dutch version. Alas...

Save pure mathematics at the VU University Amsterdam

As with most universities in the Netherlands, the VU University Amsterdam suffers from financial underfunding. All faculties and all departments at the VU are asked to take measures to deal with this problem.

For the Department of Mathematics a committee of applied mathematicians has put forward a proposal to close the Geometry Section, which consists of six tenured positions and focuses on algebraic K theory, algebraic topology, and general/geometric topology. At the same time, some of the funds freed up by the abolition of the Geometry Section are to be used for the creation of two additional positions in the Analysis Section. This proposal has received the endorsement of the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and of the Executive Board of the university. Two members of the Geometry Section will retire in the next two years and closure of the section will allow for termination of the other four tenured positions. Thus, the proposal's drastic measures will merely cut the total number of positions by two.

Of the four positions slated for termination, one is in general/geometric topology and has been held since 2001 by Jan Dijkstra. The other three people were appointed less than four years ago: Dietrich Notbohm, Rob de Jeu, and Tilman Bauer. This introduced algebraic K-theory and algebraic topology as new research subjects at the VU. In 2010, a research evaluation of all Dutch mathematics departments by an international committee took place. The committee welcomed these changes very much, stating that strong young people provided new impetus to the group in mainstream mathematics and offered promise for the future.

What are the consequences of the closure of the Geometry Section for the university? Algebra, algebraic topology, and general/geometric topology will vanish. Algebraic K-theory and general/geometric topology will cease to exist in the Netherlands, and only Utrecht will be left with research in algebraic topology. No pure mathematicians will be on the staff anymore. The university will give up central areas of mathematics and adopt a narrow research profile. The education of students offered at the VU will also become much narrower, which may lead to a drop in the yearly intake of students, and will certainly compromise the academic chances for VU graduates.

This petition asks for a reconsideration of this plan. By signing it you will help to save the Geometry Section at the Department of Mathematics at the VU!

Save paper = save forests

In Holland, there are three major free newspapers (Metro, Spits, De Pers), which are largely sponsored by advertisers.

Basically, the larger their circulation, the more advertisers pay. In order to compete with other newspapers, free newspapers are being overproduced. My friends in Amsterdam have encountered piles of dumped newspapers lying on street corners, next to the stations or supermarkets.

Newspapers are distributed through thousands of boxed slots at train stations and supermarkets. They are being picked up by the NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen, Dutch Railroads) a few times a day and dumped in mixed garbage containers. Part of them gets recycled by the NS, according with agreements with Metro and de Pers, but there is no transparency about how much of it gets recycled.

The paper that newspapers are made of only partially comes from recycled materials. It would be helpful if free newspapers took responsibility by helping to sponsor installation of the recycling bins in stations as it recently happened in London or better yet RE-READ containers, where newspapers can be re-deposit and refolded after reading as in Hong Kong.

Recently, a very good idea was developed by Head of Distribution of Metro, developed an idea that combines both profit and sustainability. The idea concerns a re-used newspaper bins operated by OV-chips and/or mobile phones placed on railroad stations. The precedent already exists in Holland , as customers can get credit points for, for example, disposing of recyclable bottles at supermarkets. The credit is directly transferred to the customer's OV-chip or directly to their phone (in co-operation with Rabobank) at the check-out counters and could be used directly by getting discount on groceries or donating credit to charities.

The readers will place their used newspapers in the bin, getting immediately credited to their OV-chip or phone. This credit could be used for purchases or savings at all participating companies, such as McDonalds (which is already Metro's partner), or coffee kiosks, or even NS tickets at the station. Once deposited into the bin, the newspapers will be pressed and folded (the way it is done in Hong Kong ) and ready to be taken out again looking almost new. Other newspapers (De Pers, Spits! And Dag) can also participate in the scheme. They could be deposited and taken out of separate slots.

At the end of the day, newspapers from the bins could be recycled, saving the (huge) costs of cleaning the stations, trains and mixed garbage. The necessity to supply fresh newspapers to the train stations couple of times a day (and thus saving transportation and distribution costs) will be reduced. The amount of printed paper per day will also be greatly reduced. The readership of the newspapers could be increased and the costs of production, transportation, distribution and recycling could be cut drastically. Metro, by placing its logo on the bins, will also profit from supporting its image as an environmentally friendly newspaper and perhaps be able to attract greater government and EU subsidies for its scheme in other countries where it operates.

The reasoning behind this idea is based on commercial and social research among Dutch consumers. Research shows that Dutch customers are environmentally aware but will not actually do much about it if there isn’t a (small financial) incentive for them for doing so. Saving credit from Air Miles and similar schemes is popular in Holland , as is the use of gadgets such as mobile technology. Environmental awareness plus (small) profit, plus the use of gadgets could lead to the winning formula, but the idea still needs to be tested.

There are a number of Dutch as well as EU sponsors who could potentially be interested in financing the development and testing of such bins. If the test is successful (on one station, for example), it could be applied to all stations in Holland and indeed in the whole of Europe. we still need to see whether the idea is viable. If so, this would be a good example of how both profit and responsibility could be combined.

We petition to support this idea and for establishing greater transparency about the origin of paper used for production of newspapers and stricter production controls.

Get rid of Transfercompare

Once a time there was no transfercompare. The prices to buy/sell players were much higher than now.

A solution which is able to help the prices get raised, it won't help for 100% but it will help, is to delete the transfercompare.

The transfercompare does not really compare the prices, but shows related players who are sold for a price.
That can be lower than the actual worth of a player, and if more people believe that, which does happen, other prices will decrease as well.

BUT: It wont be fair to newbies. So the solution is: Remove TC for everyone, except newbies. They are allowed to have it for one season so they can learn from it!

Pitbulls moeten VERBODEN blijven

Bring Darren Hayes to the Benelux (Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg)

Tuesday 14 November 2000. For so many this date means nothing. But for us, Belgian and Dutch fans of Darren Hayes – former lead-singer of Savage Garden - it does.

Almost six years have gone by since the last concert of Savage Garden in Holland. In those six years, much has happened: Savage Garden split up, and Darren Hayes started his solo career. He has had two successful CD's (Spin and The Tension and the Spark) and some major hits (Insatiable, Strange relationship, Crush (1980 ME) and more recently Pop!ular, Darkness and So Beautiful). This year he toured in the UK, Ireland, Thailand and his home-country Australia (his 3rd solo-tour), and did showcases in Russia, the USA, Sweden …

But it has been 6 years since the Belgian and Dutch fans have seen him. We feel a bit neglected. We have a Darren Hayes under-dose! When are we going to see him again? Are we ever? Those questions keep on spinning in our minds! But today, we aren't just thinking about them as problems. We are solving them!

With this petition we would like to show that Holland and Belgium, although being very small countries, have a very BIG heart for Darren. We would like to show the world how much we miss him here.

And maybe - who knows - he will come to visit us in the nearby future?

*** We have collected over 600 signatures already! Please do not sign this petition if you have signed it on the other host! You can check the signatures list @ www.benelux4darren.tk ***

Please keep in mind that the comments will be send to the target.
