Scrap the Home Report

Having bought a house based on a Home Report, the surveyor missed approx. £40k worth essential repairs, to make the house wind and water tight, and over valued the property £40,000.

We believe there are many similar cases of faulty or negligent Home Reports across Scotland and believe that the current system is failing house buyers and costing people thousands in unexpected repair bills, not to mention the stress and financial worry associated with a legal battle.

Under the proposed budget cuts, a reduction in the school week is being considered.

This will impact all our children, reducing the time at school will impact the quality of education and the breadth of the curriculum.

Keep Edinburgh Mounted Police Unit

LOTHIAN and Borders Police is set to lose its mounted section. The unit has been recommended for closure, with the horses transferred to Strathclyde Police as part of plans to save £52,000 a year.

The redeployment would reduce services in the community and lead to further centralisation of resources.

Bring back Work Experience for ALL

I, and the other people who signed this think that everyone should get the chance to have some work experience. Up until last year, forth years at my school got work experience but from now on they will not receive it.

It seems unfair that it has been cut. Work experience should be offered to all so we can learn what a job is like and see if the subjects we have chosen are correct for the subject. if we do not enjoy our time at work experience we might be able to choose different subjects.

This is why I think work experience is very important and should be brought back to ALL.

Save the National Centre for Excellence in Traditional Music

Although the Highland Council has now voted to withdraw the Centre's funding, it has also included the following statement in the minutes of its proceedings:

“The Council's aim is to secure its long term future, and to do so in the most financially efficient and effective way, given the severe financial pressure on the Council by exploring all possibilities and options.

“The Council propose to engage the Scottish Government, West Highland College and other interests in further discussions exploring how the Centre may play a role in supporting wider potential development in traditional music within the region.”

Pressure must now be brought to bear on the Council to make good on this statement.

The Highland Council has targeted the National Centre for Excellence in Traditional Music, based at Plockton High School, in its proposed cuts package. http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/Article.aspx/2115087

If the cuts are voted through at the Highland Council meeting on February 10, the Centre could close as soon as July next year. Director Dougie Pincock was interviewed on the BBC this morning and said that while he expected the Centre to take its share of any cuts he 'hadn't anticipated it would be all of it.'

Plockton has been an integral part of Scottish Traditional Music for the past 10 years. It has started many of our best young musicians on the road to their career and provided training in traditional music and groupwork from some of Scotland's finest musicians. Our young folk could not have gained this level of training anywhere else.

Help HMS Sufferers In Fife and Grampian

HMS also known as Joint Hypermobility Syndrome is a condition where you can over extend your joints and easily dislocate joints, it is also known as Double Jointed. HMS is very uncommon and was only discovered in the last 40-50 years. Many areas are up on this condition and other conditions associated with HMS and offer alot of treatment/information and services, NHS Fife & Grampian however don't know much about it or provide the information and treatment available. Many of us are still waiting to see a Physiotherapist and Rhumatologist and having to deal with the pain on our own.

Our nearest centre is Glasgow and we have to be referred to it, but many of our doctors won't.

Save Cathkin Community Nursery

Cathkin Community Nursery provides an outstanding service that benefits the community and beyond. It has achieved the highest HMIe rating possible and is a brand new facility. It is a 52wk a year nursery providing parent/carers with the chance to up skill and enter the workforce. The government are working to improve children's life chances, we know that a child's early years will determine how they will do later.

The government have also said that they will extend on pre school education for some Two Year Olds as well. Cathkin Community Nursery are already implementing what the Government would like to see happening Nationwide, so why then would South Lanarkshire Council be looking to close the role model for Scottish Nurseries?

Stop the Old Firm bully tactics!

As you will have seen in the press. This season, Rangers and Celtic sent proposals to all other SPL clubs asking them to pay a 5% surcharge to distribute tickets to their own supporters for away matches.

i.e If Celtic played Hearts at Tynecastle last season. Hearts sent tickets to Celtic and Celtic sold them. The money for these tickets then went back to Hearts.

This season Celtic would only send 95% of that money back.

All of the SPL clubs disagreed with these plans.

This morning (1st August 2008) Dundee United have stated that they have had to accept this 5% charge as Celtic have told them "If you don't pay, we don't take ANY tickets!" which stands to cost United £100,000.

In other words. The two biggest clubs in Scotland are now standing together to BULLY the smaller teams out of money that most of them can ill afford.

It's time for the 10 other clubs to test the resolve of Rangers and Celtic. If they threaten to send no fans. Fine! Sell those tickets to your own fans. Create an atmosphere that is as biased as the ones you face at Ibrox and Parkhead. Or close those areas of the ground that they normally take up saving money in policing and stewarding costs.

Save the Loch Arklet View

The magnificent views at Loch Arklet are under threat of being planted over by Forestry Commission Scotland to become part of the 'Great Trossachs Forest'. There is more information on our website www.locharkletview.org.uk including photographs of this famous view, which is highly valued by both local people and also the many tourists who visit the area.

Community organisations representing those living at or near to Loch Arklet have been expressing their concerns about these planting plans since they were issued in late 2007, but now have been asked by Forestry Commission Scotland to provide urgent evidence of wider support for leaving this area unplanted. We will provide this petition as evidence to all the above targets with influence in making this decision.

Loch Arklet and its surrounding moorland provide the most stunning view in our part of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Please help us save it for future generations by signing our petition.

Thank you.

Update 17 December 2008: Our petition is still active with over 1000 signatures now received, including those on the identical paper petition.
The decision on planting at Loch Arklet has been delayed due to errors made by FCS, and information is being considered by Scottish Government Ministers - see the website for further details.

Update 29 January 2009: A motion has just been lodged in The Scottish Parliament supporting our case, which is a huge boost to the campaign. See the website for details. Our petition is still active with 1560 signatures now received, including those on the identical paper petition being signed by many visitors to the area. Please keep signing to show your support!

Heathrow expansion vote - Nigel Griffiths MP

The government has approved plans to expand Heathrow airport despite genuinely widespread opposition.

An indicative vote on the issue will be held in the House of Commons this Wednesday 28th. Nigel Griffiths, MP for Edinburgh South, has been inconsistent in his position on this issue.

On April 2nd 2008, he voted in favour of the pro-expansion government motion in a debate on Heathrow in the House of Commons.

On Sept 29th, he told an audience of University of Edinburgh academics and students that he was 'inclined to be opposed' to a third runway.

Nigel Griffiths was elected on a majority of just 400 votes. The Lib Dems, Greens and Conservatives oppose Heathrow expansion.

Nigel Griffiths must take part in this vote and make clear to voters what his position is. He must join other Labour MPs (including in Edinburgh) and vote against this incredibly foolish decision.
