Protect Changi Point Ferry Terminal Cats

We were alerted to the removal of two community cats from the Changi Point Ferry Terminal on Tuesday, 29 Dec 2015.

The community cats have been living in peaceful co-existence with visitors and Changi Village residents.

There was no attempt at mediation before pest control allegedly swooped in and removed the cats.

We are still trying to establish if it was pest control that took the cats. What we know is the cats have been impounded at AVA.

Update at 12 noon on 31 Dec 2015: The cats have since been bailed out by Cat Welfare Society volunteers.

Plea for Clemency for Dr Looi Kok Poh

It was reported in the Straits Times in September 2011 that Dr Looi Kok Poh, who runs a private clinic at Gleneagles Medical Centre, was sued by his patient, Mr Li Siu Lun, after an operation in 2006 in which Mr Li claimed that Dr Looi had performed an additional procedure on him without consent, and later had the consent form altered.

Parkway Holdings subsequently revoked Dr Looi's accreditation with the three hospitals it owned: Gleneagles, Mount Elizabeth and Parkway East. In addition, Dr Looi will be facing disciplinary action by the Singapore Medical Council for altering the consent form.

While amending a consent form is a serious ethical breach, we feel that there are mitigating factors that should be taken into account when the Council decides on the appropriate disciplinary action to be taken against Dr Looi.

We believe that Dr Looi has delivered a standard of care to his patient that at least equals the level expected of his profession. At every stage during the period of care he had always placed Mr Li's best interests first, and had kept the patient abreast of what was happening. He also informed the patient post-operatively that he had repaired an inadvertently severed nerve during the operation. It was unfortunate that an inadequate consent form was prepared by the nurse prior to surgery, necessitating an amendment post-operatively for which Dr Looi omitted to obtain the patient's countersignature.

Above all, Dr Looi has proven himself a man of sterling character over the years by giving generously of his time and effort to society through his pro bono and humanitarian medical work (see Addendum).

We therefore submit a plea to the Singapore Medical Council to exercise clemency in meting out disciplinary action when it convenes to hear Dr Looi's case. Please help support this cause by signing the petition below.

Yours sincerely,

Drs Leong Yan Hoi & Juliana Ho

ADDENDUM

We have attached a list of Dr Looi Kok Poh’s contributions to our society, that this may be a testimonial to the compassionate and civic-minded person he is.

Since 2007, Dr Looi has been working for Dr Tan Lai Yong and, more recently, Dr Loh Cheng in Kunming, Yunnan, where he performs surgery for hand and orthopaedic cases once and sometimes twice a year.

Apart from the first trip where he was alone, the regular trips comprise 2 surgical teams consisting of 2 hand surgeons, 2 anesthesiologist and 2 scrub nurses, operating on about 20 cases over a 3 day surgical period in the Stone Forest region in Yunnan.

The doctors would pay for their own as well as their nurses expenses. Surgical equipment and expendables were donated by the companies in Singapore.

Kok Poh's other humanitarian contributions include :

1. Humanitarian Medical Mission to Palawan with the Diocese of Singapore, 1992

2. Surgeon in Second Combat Surgical Hospital, Singapore Armed Forces, since 1994

3. Surgeon in medical mission to China, Medical Service International, 1996

4. Tzu Chi Medical Mission to Batam, 5–7 March 2004

5. Tsunami Relief in Aceh, 22–30 January 2005

6. Hand surgical mission to Jose R Reyes Memorial Medical Centre, 8–11 September 2005

7. Medical Mission to Kashmir earthquake, November 2005.

Legalize Airsoft in Singapore

Airsoft is a sport that is fun and legal.

Although it can cause severe injuries, Singaporeans should be sensible - play with protective gear like vests. The new generation of Singapore is changing.

The fundamental difference in airsoft and normal shooting ranges is that we all want to have a weapon to call it our own and play against each other.
Hence it is pointless to go to a range, spend money to shoot targets and go home.

The Singapore Government should make protective gear a necessary equipment for airsoft. And airsoft matches should have referees to supervise and ensure no foul play.

I believe the Singapore government can allocate several places for airsoft.
It has to be spacious. Abandoned buildings need not be demolished, it can re-converted into an airsoft facility. Warehouses are a good place as they are far from the public, so as to prevent any accidents between players and the public.

All airsoft weapons would have a ORANGE BARREL TIP as some countries have done. The ORANGE TIP is to acknowledge authorities upon Customs that this is not a real weapon.

After clearing Customs, all weapons would have to be transported from the Customs to the armory under armed guard, so as to ensure the weapon was not tampered by the owner until delivery at the airsoft facility.

All items related to airsoft should be transferred this way. Owners should NOT be allowed to increase their firing velocity, but allowed to upgrade things like a laser scope or a better handgrip. They should order through either the Airsoft Facility staff or online purchasing. Custom officers can check the address of the item, to ensure the address is that of the airsoft facility and not their home address. They should also be allowed to confiscate any upgrades which will increase the firing velocity.

Owners should be allowed to take home the weapon WITHOUT some part of the firing mechanism or the plastic pellets.
All weapons will be checked for the removal of the firing mechanism before exiting and owners should be checked to confirm that they do not conceal it or pellets. The parts should be sealed and labelled with the owner's name, and safely secured at the airsoft facility lockers.

Foreigners who have their own rifles in their own countries would probably like to bring them over if they have to work in Singapore.

They should send their rifles to Singapore, and have it checked at the Singapore Customs. The firing velocity must be between a range of 100 FPS - 280 FPS, the usual for stock rifles. After clearing customs. Their weapons must be delivered to the designated airsoft facilities.

It has already been confirmed that airsoft rifles CANNOT be changed to a real firearm. Even if robbers try to use these airsoft weapons to rob banks, they would have to consider the high probability of getting shot and killed.

Since airsoft is quite popular in other countries, i believe many foreigners would consider coming to Singapore to try out the new airsoft facilities. Economically speaking, if Singapore managed to have superb facilities, it would most certainly be a place to visit for airsofters, hence it would benefit both Singaporeans and foreigners.

Banning things like chewing gum are ok. They cause trouble. But Airsoft does not, with strict rules and regulations, i don't see why airsoft should be banned in Singapore.

Please make airsoft legal.

Help Houzy... help 2A

Members of the public, students of Anglican High School and people who are reading this petition now, I would like to bring to your attention that a Teacher staff from our school, Mr. Hou Zhi Yong, has to leave the school for some unknown reason that he does not want to disclose to the public. At the end of 2003 this year, his contract for teaching will end and the school does not plan to renew his contract for him.

In Anglican High, many students are very fond of Mr. Hou, especially his form class, 2A. We understand that the school may have their own reasons for not renewing his contract, however we students feel that his contract should be renewed for the following reasons.
1.	He has already taught in Anglican High for 6 years and we think that he would have more teaching experience than new teachers; also he has already built up a strong relationship between him and the student population.

2.	As he had studied Chinese History and Chinese Literature in university before, Mr. Hou have a vast range of knowledge from Chinese cultures to archeologist works that we think would benefit the students a lot as most students are much influenced by Westernized ideas and teachings, and may have lost contact with the rich knowledge available in Chinese history and literature.

3.	He has new, interesting teaching methods like using stories and songs related to the lessons to interest us more thus making sure that the students are paying full attention to the lesson and helping the students to understand the lessons better.

4.	He not only teaches the students what is required in the curriculum, but fills in with lots of extra information that enriches our knowledge, like for example during the China immersion trip, he and the tour guide while on the road or at each different tourist attraction, will explain to us what is so interesting and amazing about the tourist attraction, the history behind it and so on.

5.	Finally and most importantly, although in the eyes of others, we students may seem not to be showing respect for Mr. Hou. But actually it is because of his amicable character that we feel and treat him differently. In school, we respect and treat him just like any other teachers in the school, but then once we are out of school, he is like our friend and we can confide to him whenever we are troubled. Thus the school might be mistaken that Mr. Hou is too soft on the students, but we would just like to clarify that Mr. Hou does scold us when he thinks is necessary.

Here is an excerpt given by my classmate from 2A and her feelings towards this whole incident. I hope that you will be able to understand what we are trying to bring across to you, and pray that you would give us a helping hand by signing our petition. Please…

Friend A)
21st November 2003, the day when the whole of 2a broke down and cry.
We were supposed to be having the last minute of fun before we leave Beijing and head home after that 7 long days of playing. We were all very happy, heading to Hardrock Cafe to do sum last min shopping, but he chose to broke the news to us at that time..
He's not coming back with us..
We broke down and cried, we didn't want to let him know we are crying, we didn't want to make him worried. But the useless me gave us away, I couldn't control. I cannot believe after spending 2 yrs together he wants to leave us behind, I know he has no choice, but did he forgot his promise to survive the 4yrs of schooling and accompany us to get our O'level certs???? He promised and he broke it. I know he would want to fulfill this promise he made to us, I know he feels very heartbroken like we do, I know he didn't want this to happen too. But, I really cannot face the schooling yrs without him, without his silly jokes that often made us freeze, without hearing his voice in class again, without looking at his "angry" face which wasn't really successful, without having to groan at him for giving the huge load of homework, without being able to bargain with him whether we should do the composition or not, without wearing the 2A class tee together again, without being able to scorn at his fashion sense, without having him as our class guardian angel. Without him...
Fun=nothing
HOuzy: This 2 years have been the best years in my life, being able to have such wonderful classmates and teacher like you. I know you feel the same way, you told us on the bus to the airport. It was then I really realised our class has always been very dependent on you. We treat you like a close friend of ours: sharing joy, pain and unhappiness with you and you only. Remember all the things that happened? Haha.. your presence had an big impact on 2A and the impact will affect our whole lives. You taught us how to care of one another in class, you brighten our days and now you are leaving us. I really, really, really do not know what to say. You are like a father to us and I'm sorry for sleeping in your class, making you upset. Sorry, but you MUST remember what you promised us at the airport. PLEASE, take care of yourself and never forgot the class that loves you more than anyone did, 2A, us
We love you forever and ever, must take care. Goodbye..

For the above reasons and many much more, we 2A students would like you to do your part by signing the petition.
