Relocate Mouille Point desalination plant

The City of Cape Town has employed stealthy tactics. With zero public participation and no environmental impact analysis, the City is trying to proceed with the construction of an industrial desalination plant on the Mouille Point beach promenade and high-density residential area.

We understand the significance of water, and a desalination plant has been necessary for some time. But our plea is simple; relocate the plant. There are several suitable, less invasive location options, either within the many industrial sites within the Cape Town harbour or alternatively next to the unused vacant lot adjacent to Cape Town Stadium, Both of these areas are well equipt to host this plant and would not effect the popular public space of the promenade or the Mouille Point residences.

The effects of the 60db (Louder than busy traffic) and air pollution from the generators will affect local property prices, as well as deter holiday makers (close proximity to the Waterfront and the Golf Course) from the area, but will also remove Cape Tonian's from an incredibly popular public recreational space. Not only do people enjoy the parking lot for the spectacular sea views, but the area is a popular dog-friendly beach as well as a favourite surfing location along the Atlantic Seaboard. This land is a treasure for the City of Cape Town broader public, as well as its permanent residence, and neither party has been appropriately considered in this matter..

No environmental impact analysis was performed, this demonstrates a disregard for the delicate ecosystem into which the discharge from the facility plans on pumping into the ocean. This is a concern for the diverse wildlife in the water, including the sea birds, seals, dolphins, sunfish and whales that frequent these waters. The millions of liters of brine pollution (occures as a result of desalination) is also a health and safety concern for those civilians utilize the sea for recreational purposes such as surfing, swimming, diving and, paddle skiing.

Vote to change the location of desalination plant! There is a more suitable solution that can benefit the City's water solutions without compromising the environment, the residents, tourists and the general public.

Safer intersections on Lucullus road, Joostenbergvlakte

There is a proven increase in the blatant disregard for stop streets in Joostenbergvlakte, and especially the three on Lucullus Road. The Joostenbergvlakte Community Forum would like to see some measures put in place to implement traffic calming and increase the likelihood of drivers obeying the stop signs.

To this end, the JCF would like to see:

1) Raised intersections at the Suikerbekkie, Owl and Waarburgh intersections.

2) Outsized 4-way STOP signs to replace the existing signs.

3) Repainted road markings

4) Red cat's eyes installed across the stop lines.

Give Mandela da Silva a second chance

Mandela Ericson Afonso da Silva was born on the 6th of April of 1984 in Luanda, Angola. He first went to South Africa in 1997 when his father, lieutenant General João José Afonso da Silva of the Angolan army, was appointed on a diplomatic mission as the Military Attaché of the Angolan chancellery in South Africa.

He was in South Africa on a diplomatic visa for 7 years and it was then changed to a student visa when his father’s mission ended. When his student visa was about to expire he unfortunately lost his passport and I was waiting for my results and graduation from CTI (Computer Training Institute) in Pretoria. He did not know exactly when it expired and how long he was in South Africa. Because he needed to get a new passport and leave South Africa, he approached the Angolan embassy for instructions on how to leave and avoid getting in trouble with the South African immigration authorities (which is the main reason why he overstayed), he voluntarily went to home affairs department to solve the matter, he asked them to issue him a letter to explain everything to the immigration officers to avoid being banned (which is what happened after all).

Because he had been in South Africa without a valid visa, they asked him to get a laissez-passer or safe conduct from his embassy and a plane ticket, they issued him a voluntary order to leave ( which they said would solve all problems) the country by the 25th of June which was the date on the plane ticket and he did leave on the 25th of June. At the airport borders, they issued a fine for the time he had been in the country without a valid visa and he was told to pay it at the South African consulate in Angola and that there wouldn’t be any problems. Soon as he arrived, he paid the fine as he was told, he then applied for a holiday visa for 45 days and was told that he was not allowed in South Africa. He was told to write a letter to the Director General of Home Affairs South Africa explaining what had happened. He wrote the letter but the visa was denied!

Get 500 Years Later and Motherland documentary on SABC

500 Years Later for 4 years has been stuck with SABC in the negotiation process. They are trying to ignore this powerful multi-award winning documentary which deals with the legacy of slavery and oppression in Africa and the Diaspora. Even if you don't live in Africa be part of Pan-African change by demanding our Motherland is representative of the majority interest.

South Africa a highly racialized society which is plagued with the legacy of apartheid, which was an assault on the human dignity of African people. That trauma is identical to that suffered by the African Diaspora. Despite South Africa's claims at creating a new South Africa for all, the media remains largely distant from content that empowers the African majority. It white wash issues of race and self-determination leaving the people with deep internalize feelings of self-hatred and self-ignorance.

The sequel to 500 Years Later is Motherland which deals with the most concise story of Africa. Despite even having in the South African president all attempts to license this film to the national broadcaster are ignored.

Stop the dust in Achilles Road

The amount of dust that are generated in Achilles road is at a level which is dangerous to our and our children's health. We as affected resident pay our full taxes as any Tshwane resident yet our voices are not heard.

The root cause of the problem is the inadequate planning by the former Kungwini municipality. The request to pave the road was submitted in each IDP since 2009, we have written to the roads department even to the mayor of Tshwane. We have no indication that the road will be paved very soon.

Stop the killing of Cape Town's Baboons

Update (July 13, 2010) William of Scarborough is the first non-dispersing male to be killed under the new "raiding baboon" protocol. He was trapped and killed in secret without any public knowledge or input around the decision making.

UPDATE (May 15, 2010): IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED THAT CAPE NATURE CONSERVATION HAS ALREADY CAPTURED AND KILLED "SOL", ONE OF THE DISPERSING MALES THAT WERE "TAGGED" LAST YEAR, IGNORING ALL NON-LETHAL OPTIONS OFFERED TO THEM, AND OPERATING BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, DESPITE VEHEMENT PUBLIC PROTEST. THIS WAS DONE UNDER THE NEW "DISPERSING MALE" PROTOCOL

----------------------------------

Plans are under way to cull Cape Town's dispersing male and repeat raider baboons. Bart, a dispersing male recently seen at UCT is one of the first of a number of healthy adult males targeted for euthanasia.

Three offers have been made to relocate him and other dispersing males elsewhere off the Peninsula, but these are being ignored by the Wildlife Advisory Committee, even though translocation is an option set out in the new protocol.

(To date- July 2010, we do not know what happened to Bart as he disappeared late last year).

ASA Board must resign

Once again, the ASA board have placed their own interests above the interests of the athletes they are supposed to represent. By clinging to power at all costs and not cooperating with SASCOC, they have caused the suspension of ASA as a SASCOC member.

The full statement can be read on www.sascoc.co.za

This means that South African athletes will not be able to compete in the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games or All Africa Games. It may also have further repurcussions, as SASCOC are seeking to engage with the African Athletics Federation and the IAAF so that they will also suspend ASA. This means NO athletics whatsoever!

Consequently, the only way to rectify this situation is for the current ASA Board to resign with immediate effect.

BAA, AEA, CCA we're all paramedics!

The Health Professions Council of South Africa has indicated their desire to replace the existing short-course format paramedic courses with the B-tech and ECT paramedic programs.

The HPCSA are not however consulting adequately with existing paramedics, and many medics can not afford the high costs of tertiary level education.

Our appeal is for the HPCSA to re-instate short courses and allow for the recognition of the short course format within the national qualifications framework, and empower paramedics that cannot afford university education to become fully qualified advanced life support paramedics using the short course formats.

Against Unfair UNISA CTA Exam Dates

ATTENTION: UNISA CTA STUDENTS *ONLY*

**NB! PLEASE TYPE IN YOUR STUDENT NUMBER UNDER "POST CODE"***

As I trust you are all aware, UNISA has set the CTA exam dates as follows:

Study Unit Date Time Duration
TOE407V (FINACC) 2009-09-30 08:00 5 hour(s)
TOE408W (MANACC) 2009-10-01 08:00 5 hour(s)
TOE409X (TAX) 2009-10-05 08:00 5 hour(s)
TOE412S (AUDIT) 2009-09-29 08:00 5 hour(s)

Auditing, Financial Accounting and Management accounting are written in a 3-day row, which is, in my opinion, unfair.

I believe there is great dissatisfaction amongst a majority of UNISA's CTA students, which I hope this petition will demonstrate to the satisfaction of UNISA such that they will space out the exams with at least 3 days in between each other.

We, as CTA students, are aware of the fact that the SAICA QE1 board exam has been pushed back earlier to January 2010, but spacing out the exam dates by 2-3 days will not cause any major scheduling problems for getting the CTA results out to SAICA, given that the suggested spacing should result in the last paper being written on 9 October, which is only 4 days than originally planned.

Spacing out the exams is of absolute importance and will greatly influence the pass rates of CTA students this year, especially considering that there will be NO supplementary exams this year.

May I also bring to your attention that UKZN CTA exams are from 7 - 13 Oct (which is later than Unisa exams) & they are also having Supplementary exams from 23 - 26 Nov.

This petition will be submitted to one of the senior professors at UNISA (name not published here).

Stephenie Meyer Please Complete Midnight Sun

Teen-lit author Stephenie Meyer has announced that the next instalment of her phenomenally successful Twilight saga is “on hold indefinitely”, after an unnamed acquaintance leaked a rough draft via the Internet.

Meyer, who is often referred to as the new J. K. Rowling, had already posted the finished first chapter of Midnight Sun to her website. In response to the breach, the devout Mormon decided to post the entire draft on her website, so that fans choosing not to read the illegally reproduced version do not “feel they have to make a sacrifice to stay honest”.

In a preface, she writes: “I have a good idea of how the leak happened as there were very few copies of Midnight Sun that left my possession and each was unique. The manuscript that was illegally distributed on the Internet was given to trusted individuals for a good purpose. I have no comment beyond that as I believe that there was no malicious intent with the initial distribution.”
