La construction de ce ‘Lavoir’, grande usine de préparation du charbon, a été construit en 1923 (Lavoir 1) et agrandi par la suite (Lavoirs 2, 3 et 4) pour constituer un ensemble prestigieux, un seul volume massif en fer, acier, briques verre, dominant le site minier et son environnement.
La mine de Beringen et le Lavoir dans sa totalité furent classés Monuments Historiques par le gouvernement flamand en 1993-1994 .

En 2009, la réaffectation de la mine fut assignée à la société PPP BE-Mine , dont le principal partenaire est LRM (la société de reconversion et d'investissement du Limbourg établie par le gouvernement flamand), ainsi qu'un certain nombre de sociétés de construction et d'immobilier. Ceux-ci ont conclu que la conservation de l'usine de préparation du charbon entière n'était ni souhaitable ni possible et - sans aucune étude approfondie de l'histoire du bâtiment - décidèrent de la démolition imminente des Lavoirs 1 et 3. Un parking automobile devrait se situer à l'emplacement du Lavoir n°1.

Une demande de permis de démolition pour le Lavoir n°1 a été déposée avant les vacances d’été 2017. Il est prévu qu'une fois ce lavoir détruit, la procédure de démolition du Lavoir n°3 sera initiée. Cependant, même si selon certains rumeurs il semble y avoir un accord politique concernant la démolition, le bâtiment n'a pas encore été déclassée et apparemment, la demande de démolition ne prend pas compte de cette considération.

A la mi-octobre, le conseil municipal de Beringen a refusé la demande de permis de démolition pour la section " Lavoir 1 ". Ce refus fait maintenant l'objet d'une procédure d'appel à auprès de la députation permanente de la province du Limbourg, qui doit examiner le dossier et prendre une décision d'ici début mars 2018. En ce moment on remarque beaucoup de pression politique et du lobbying pour obtenir un permis de démolition.

La démolition d’une grande partie du bâtiment revient à négliger l'importance de son intégrité. De cette manière, la démolition du premier composant (lavoir n° 1) se révèle un précédent dangereux à détruire davantage le bâtiment, menant à la perte progressive la valeur du site minier entier. En plus, donner un permis pour démolir une grande partie de ce bâtiment classé, sans déclassement, représenterait un grave et dangereux précédent pour les autres bâtiments classés monument historique en Flandre.
Cela peut également être considéré comme un mauvais signal au début de l'Année européenne du Patrimoine Culturel 2018.

L'usine de lavage du charbon du charbonnage de Beringen est l'un des 12 sites du patrimoine inscrits sur la liste restreinte (shortlist) du programme «The 7 Most Endangered 2018» par un panel d'experts dans divers domaines. Ce programme, lancé par Europa Nostra, la principale organisation du patrimoine en Europe et l'Institut de la Banque européenne d'investissement, avec le soutien du programme ‘Creative Europe - Europe Créative’ de la Commission Européenne, est surtout un appel à l'action. Il appelle les acteurs publics et privés aux niveaux local, national et européen à unir leurs forces pour sauver les trésors du patrimoine issus de notre histoire partagée et qui se doivent d'être sauvegardés pour les générations futures,

L'Association flamande d'archéologie industrielle vzw, plate-forme d'associations privées et de bénévoles travaillant en Flandre et à Bruxelles pour le sauvegarde et la mise en valeur du patrimoine industriel, soutient pleinement les actions de préservation et de revalorisation de ce bâtiment important

On March 9th, 2017 my Facebook profile was permanently shut down, because I had posted "Pornographic content". You told me I could object and explain by email what and why I had posted what I posted. I told you then, and I will tell you again (since you obviously did not read what I wrote, maybe I should use easier terms);

In December of 2014 I found out I am a carrier of the cancer causing gene BRCA1. This means I have a REALLY high risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. You can not understand what this is like, unless you are in the same position. This is why there are different PRIVATE groups on Facebook for woman like me. We are not just members of a group, we are a what we call a "Sisterhood". We help each other, lift each other up AND share pictures of ourselves during our process. Needless to say these pictures are of wounds, scars and many more medical shit, but also of our new nipples and tattoos.
These tattoos are not just for fun, they are the last step in a long process that is marked by pain, fear, hospitals and many many tears. A process in which your body stops being yours for too long.

When I got my new nipples on March 9, 2017 I cried happy tears. I could NOT wait to share pictures with my sisters. Many sisters who have already been there, and many sister for whom this is yet to come. To whom this is an image of hope.
Yet, as soon as I posted a picture in two of these PRIVATE groups, in the comment section of the original post, I was BLOCKED. And not just a 24 hour block, but permanently.

You can say "oh it's just facebook, make a new profile and you're back." Well yes, obviously. But that is not the point. You did not just shut down my private page. You shut down three business pages that had close to 1500 followers, you shut down my "friendship" with my sister, who passed away of ovarian cancer. You shut down every single message we ever sent to each other, every picture we shared and every moment we shared on our profiles. And most importantly, you shut down my birth given right to speak. You have censored me.

What stings most of all is the fact that according to yourself I "violated the guidelines of the Facebook community." The same guidelines that state you have to be thirteen years old to sign up. Do you know what happens when you are thirteen? You move from child to teenager. As a girl, you develop breasts, get your period and get wider hips. You are insecure about your body because it is changing so much. Yet this is the minimum age you are allowed into a online community that states that everything about the female body is absolutely disgusting. ESPECIALLY breasts. YUCK. But a movie that shows how a transgender woman is brutally beaten to death is just fine.

Yet if you search the internet, one of the first articles I found said as follows:

“We remove photographs of people displaying genitals or focusing in on fully exposed buttocks,” the new policy reads. “We also restrict some images of female breasts if they include the nipple, but we always allow photos of women actively engaged in breastfeeding or showing breasts with post-mastectomy scarring.”

I don't know what is happening here, but you need to either review your guidelines, or consequently do what you say. Change your narrow minded ideas of sexuality. BREASTS ARE NOT PER DEFINITION SEXUAL.

Het gebouw van HBVL staat in de mensen hun geheugen gegrift en is daardoor een deel geworden van de inwoners en van de stad, het is gemeen goed.

Het maakt deel uit van het modernistische erfgoed van morgen.

Architect Geo Bontinck was een toonbeeld van het Modernistisch Bouwen in het Gentse.

Vooral zijn publieke bouwwerken weerspiegelen de vooruitgangsgedachte van de verzorgingsstaat. Het promotiegebouw voor Stadsgas- water- en elektriciteit op het Zuid (nu nog bibliotheek) en de bedreigde gasfabriek zijn -los van hun bouwkundige kwaliteiten - daar unieke voorbeelden van.

Hij was als leerkracht architectuur en design het voorbeeld voor een reeks latere ontwerpers. Hij was in de jaren '60 zelfs directeur van het Academie in Gent. De website van de inventaris van bouwkundig erfgoed verwoordt het als volgt:
“Geo Bontinck bezat als architect het grote talent om een rationele architectuur te verrijken met een zin voor het poëtische detail. Bontinck creëerde een functionele architectuur in beton en baksteen, die gekenmerkt wordt door een krachtige volumewerking en de aanwezigheid van geïntegreerde decoratie.

Georges Bontinck studeerde eerst sierkunsten en vervolgens bouwkunst aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten te Gent. In beide disciplines werd hij laureaat in de “Vier­jaarlijkse Grote Prijskamp”, respectievelijk in 1921 en 1924. Bontinck startte zijn loopbaan met de bouw van villa’s en herenhuizen, maar tekende eveneens veel meubelontwerpen. In 1935 werd hij benoemd als leraar Sierkunst, Urbanisatie en Tuinaanleg aan de Gentse Academie. In 1944 werd hij leraar Architectuur en tevens directeur van dit instituut (tot 1969), waarbinnen hij een belangrijke invloed had op de jongere generaties studenten.

Als urbanist en esthetisch adviseur van de gemeente Zelzate (vanaf 1938) bouwde hij onder­meer het gemeentehuis (1938), een bejaardentehuis, een watertoren en sociale woningen in deze gemeente. Te Gent en in de brede rand errond, evenals aan de kust en te Brussel zijn verschillende villa’s van zijn hand terug te vinden, gekenmerkt door een sobere, maar sterk driedimensionele opbouw in baksteen, met platte daken en stalen raamprofielen. Geo’s vader, Karel Bontinck (1869-1931), was aannemer en actief in de socialistische bewe­ging als voorzitter van de coöperatieve “NV Gentse Bouwwerken” en als gemeenteraadslid. Ook zou Geo Bontinck een aantal opdrachten voor de socialistische beweging realiseren, waaronder sociale appartementsblokken aan de Gentse Watersportbaan (1957) en in de wijk “Nieuw Gent” (1968- 1978). Eén van zijn meest gekende projecten is dat voor de Gas- en Elekriciteitsdienst van de Stad Gent, aan het Gentse “Zuid” (1955), nu gerenoveerd tot stads­bibliotheek. “
