Petition: Expanding Access to Employment Law Resources

The Goal

To ensure that workers across the United States have broad access to comprehensive employment law resources. This access will empower them to make informed decisions about their rights and responsibilities in the workplace, helping them navigate disputes effectively and protect their rights.

The Problem

Across the United States, many workers remain unaware of their employment rights, which can lead to exploitation, discrimination, and various other injustices in the workplace. A lack of access to clear and accessible information on employment laws creates a significant disadvantage for employees, especially those lacking legal knowledge or who face language barriers.

Imagine a worker who faces discrimination in the workplace but does not know they have the right to seek recourse or what steps they should initiate to file a complaint. Without knowledge of their rights, individuals find themselves in vulnerable positions. This issue is exacerbated by the complexity and sprawling nature of employment law itself. Legal jargon and complicated regulatory language make it difficult for many people to understand their entitlements and obligations.

Furthermore, the fear of retaliation often discourages those who might otherwise seek clarification or assistance from a Los Angeles employment lawyer. This is despite the fact that many employment law attorneys offer free consultations.

The lack of awareness extends beyond individuals to communities and disproportionately affects those in underrepresented groups. Marginalized communities often face additional barriers, such as language and cultural differences, that make accessing clear employment law information even harder. Without proper resources, members of these communities may not realize when their rights are being infringed upon or what measures they can take to combat such violations.

Moreover, while some resources are available online, there is often a disparity in the quality and accuracy of information presented. Workers might encounter conflicting sources, leading to confusion and potential missteps. Smaller, less-resourced businesses might also struggle to keep their employees informed about their rights due to a lack of dedicated human resources staff or access to legal counsel.

Many workers are unaware that legal assistance is available, including free or low-cost options for those unable to afford traditional legal representation. This unawareness prevents them from seeking proper legal assistance when faced with workplace injustices.

These challenges can have serious consequences, such as wrongful termination, wage theft, or unchecked workplace discrimination. Failure to address these issues not only affects individual workers and their families but also perpetuates a cycle of ignorance and disenfranchisement, which impacts community well-being and economic stability.

The Solution

We must prioritize expanding access to employment law resources for all workers. This effort should involve collaboration between government agencies, labor unions, non-profits, and employers to create a well-coordinated network of support.

Establishing easily accessible and straightforward online platforms that provide up-to-date and comprehensive resources is essential. These platforms should include plain-language guides and multilingual materials to address language barriers.

In-person outreach programs, particularly in communities with high concentrations of vulnerable workers, would enhance resource visibility and understanding. Workshops and seminars can educate both employees and employers about their rights and responsibilities.

Another vital step is the promotion of services that offer free or affordable legal aid, ensuring workers are aware of the assistance available from resources like Los Angeles employment lawyers, and feel empowered to seek help when required.

HMMA Team Members Against UAW

This petition is against the unionization of HMMA team members. There have been attempts to form a union by the UAW in the past that were unsuccessful. This organization believes that unionization of HMMA team members could cause financial harm and lead to job loss.

Equality for BAME and International staff at QUB

This petition relates to the introduction of a new online system for reclaiming staff expenses at Queen's University Belfast named QFIS. The system allows for pounds, dollars and euros to be entered and any required currency conversions to be made automatically. However it excludes all other currencies placing the onus on staff to make their own calculations and provide screenshots of each conversion. This places a significant additional burden on BAME and international staff working in many other countries outside of the EU and the US, affecting such staff disproportionately.

Such a practice is patently opposed to:
i. Principles of equality enshrined in the university own policies.
ii. Principles of global justice in which some nations and currencies carry disproportionate influence over others especially those of the global south in which the majority of the world's population may be found.
iii. Research in areas outside of the EU-US sphere.

BAME and International staff have objected to this practice and raised the matter internally. However the University Finance directorate has so far refused to review the system despite the matter being raised by I-rise (BAME and International staff group) and UCU.

Support for Bangladeshi Garment Workers

It has been a week since RMG workers went on strike in Bangladesh demanding higher wages and improved working conditions. Workers have since been confronted with violence from authorities. Although the government has finally agreed to increase wages, it is important we hold them accountable. Furthermore, Factory owners have now sacked hundreds of workers for demonstrating their rights.

The abhorrent treatment of RMG workers –some of the lowest paid workers in the world- is utterly deplorable and deeply shameful. According to the Accord on Fire & Building Safety, the right to the freedom of association, increased wages and improved working conditions were all identified as priorities. This has clearly not been the case since the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013.

Thank You Denver Airport Workers!

There are 30,000 people who work at DIA to make sure Denverites can travel all over the world. Because of them, we get to build our businesses, visit our friends, and stay connected to our families. But how often do we thank them? How often do we think of them as crucial players in our economy and our community? They deserve our thanks this holiday season. They also deserve a living wage. We'll be delivering them these signatures to show that they are appreciated and supported by us, their neighbors.

Christine will hand-deliver your signatures and comments to airport workers!

Stop The Curry Crisis

Scotland has loved curry - our other 'national dish' - for decades but curry houses are in danger of folding, according to restaurant owners.
Home Office rules state that restaurants offering buffet or take-away food cannot hire specialist chefs from outwith the EU, because these categories are not 'fine-dining'. Restaurateurs disagree, arguing the same skill is need to create Asian food regardless of whether it's served up on a plate, or brought to your door.
This petition calls on the UK Government to modify its immigration employment rules, and allow non-EU chefs to work in buffet/take-away establishments.

Save our Curry Houses!

Thank you

Public Support for ServiceNet Workers

ServiceNet counselors, organized in UAW Local 2322, need your support during their contract negotiation campaign happening right now.

The dedicated counselors of ServiceNet provide outstanding care for some of the most vulnerable people in Western Massachusetts. They work long hours, often without breaks; provide hygiene care; skillfully de-escalate clients; administer medication and other medical attention far beyond what should be expected of a direct care staff; and generally do all that they can to help their clients live better, happier, healthier lives.

They do all of this while getting paid barely more than minimum wage. ServiceNet as an organization is already a leader in the mental health community for quality of client care, thanks in no small part to the compassion and skill of its counselors. ServiceNet has an opportunity right now to also be a leader in the fight for a living wage. The ServiceNet counselors are currently bargaining for a fair contract. Those of us in the community who depend on them for the care of our loved ones, and those of us in the community who feel they deserve a living wage for their work, need to tell the ServiceNet management team that paying their counselors a living wage is important to all of us.

Stop the bullying at the work place!

Sign this petition if you want bullying to STOP NOW!

In Santa Monica, California, I’ve been bullied at my work place. When I reported this act to my boss, his response was, "Figure it out. You do your thing and he does his." 3 months later, the bullying never stopped. It had gotten so bad, I found myself stressed out and more depressed going to work. This affected my home life. My days were filled with anxiety wondering when our next conflict would rise, where I would have to stand up for myself and not be attacked.

I documented and dated all the events to HR and asked for a transfer. HR said my formal complaint wasn't substantial enough, they couldn't transfer me and to go ahead and submit my 2 weeks notice. It was pretty much cut and dry. Thus proving, this company is another statistic on turning heads to avoid dealing with employees being victimized.

At the end of the day, HR didn't hold the coworker accountable and I lost my job. This sends the message that HR enables bullying in their work force.

Workplace bullying is on the rise. While statistics vary, some studies reveal that nearly half of all American workers have been affected by workplace bullying, either as a target or as a witness to abusive behavior against a co-worker.

Bullying is not allowed at school nor online and it sure isn’t allowed at my home. Why is it allowed at work? As a victim, bullying can cause deep depression, anxiety and even death through escalating violence or suicide.

No one deserves to feel scared at school, work or home. Too many people who witness bullying never step forward for fear of becoming a victim themselves or risking their career.

By signing this petition, we are protecting innocent victims from being bullied. Companies need to address the importance of this epidemic and how it will not be tolerated. Most of all, said bully will be held accountable for such act.

SAVE JOBS! Reject the 100% increase tax on the gaming industry

CASINO WORKERS FEAR MASSSIVE JOB LOSSES AFTER TAX IMPOSED
The Union of Members Clubs and Lottery Workers are :
• Over 9,000 direct employees currently work in the industry.
• Most are single mothers, limited education live in depressed poor communities
• Some trying to move away from a life of crime to honest work
• Over 30,000 indirect jobs created because of this industry
• The industry employs the services of, taxi drivers, caterers , decorators , florists, pest control personnel , air-condition and refrigeration personnel , electricians, plumbers , IT support , security guards and local entertainers and musicians employment year round.
• Employees earn competitive salary that affords them a decent lifestyle
• Employees are trained and most have worked in the industry for most of their working life
· Every Bar and small business with Amusement machine will be severely affected if not forced to close down.
It is because of our expertise in this industry we strongly disagree and reject the Minister of Finance announcement to impose a gaming tax of over 100%. The last time the industry was taxed without fit and proper consultations it resulted in the contraction of the industry and the loss of jobs.
The government must understand that the problems of the present economic crisis cannot be solved by unreasonably taxing the gaming industry which will led to its death. The Gaming Industry workers cannot be singled out and targeted by the Government to solve the national finances.
WE the employees of the gaming industry are painfully aware that the industry is incapable of withstanding this oppressive and harsh taxation. The government cannot be allowed to proceed under the misapprehension about the industry and formulate government policy which will detrimental to the industry.
The employees knows that the irresponsible taxation measures of the government will result in almost massive job loss in the gaming industry.
The Imposition of this punitive taxation measures is equivalent to the closure of Caroni (1975) Ltd and the retrenchment of over 9,000 workers

The whole thing is so many gamers and other YouTubers have been being stripped of income by youtube who has been abusing them and giving them nothing, they took away ads for simple things and started to encourage things like "Disney Toys", it is aimed completely at children even though adults make a majority. As well that it is straight up discriminating.
