REJECT KENYA'S CONTINUED TRADE OFFS ON WOMEN'S LIVES

On 22nd October 2020 - the United States (US) Health and Human Services Administration jointly together with the US State Department issued a joint statement dubbed the Geneva Consensus Declaration. The joint statement was co-sponsored by the states of Hungary, Brazil, Egypt, Uganda and Indonesia and further co-signed by twenty-six states among them Kenya. This document is part of an ongoing global campaign by a number of states to undermine women’s sexual reproductive health rights already recognized and adopted by the United Nations and relevant treaties and conventions for which Kenya is party to and has domesticated as guided by Article 2(5) and 2(6) of the Constitution.

Whilst not binding, the joint statement nevertheless has the unfortunate effect of creating unnecessary legal, policy and service delivery hurdles and prevailing confusion that will obstruct interventions by Kenya to address the persistently high numbers of women and girls dying due to pregnancy-related complications, particularly unsafe abortion. Kenya’s Constitution obliges the state to protect the reproductive rights of women, including the right to safe abortion under Article 26(4), a right that was also recently upheld by the Courts in Constitutional Petition No. 266 of 2015.

Abolish boarding schools for children under 12

Hello, my name is Victoria Elaine. When I was 8 years old, I was admitted to a boarding school in rural Kenya. The next 4 years were cold, lonely and deeply challenging. Boarding schools as an institution are not all bad, but the resources necessary to nurture children, to ensure that their childhood experience is not robbed and instead replaced by the necessities of looking after oneself are far too lacking to have children under 12 in most of our institutions. Parenting is a difficult job but it is also a paramount part of childhood development. The school terms in this country ensure that these children only spend 3 months of the year with their parents. This leaves almost no time to bond with these kids resulting in passive adults who have almost no societal skills because the only people they had to socialize with were their peers.
After 4 years at this said school, that has since been shut down, I was able to leave. On the last term of my schooling there, two young girls were admitted to the boarding school program. They were barely 6. I remember feeling elated that I was finally free but still my heart was broken for those girls. I knew the path they would be forced to walk for I had walked it myself. If it wasn’t the terribly cold weather(the school was located at the slopes of a mountain), it was the heavy metallic buckets we would be forced to carry to fetch water from the river incase there was no water at the school. I could not help those girls then but I believe with your help and with the assistance of the necessary government interventions we can achieve this seemingly small legislation to bring equity to our education system and save the childhood of so many children in this country. Please join me by signing this petition. Thank you

PETITION FOR DISMISSAL OF THE NWS BOARD

TO FELLOW PARENTS
NAIROBI WALDORF SCHOOL. 5th May 2017.

PETITION FOR SGM 8th May 2017 for DISMISSAL OF THE BOARD

We are calling for a Special General meeting (SGM) on 8th May 2017, the dismissal of the Board and election of an Interim Board to hold fort till 17th June when the AGM will be held. This petition is based on how the current Board has handled matters related to TSC Compliance of our teachers, and their failure to acknowledge and/ or take recommendations provided by parents. We are not advocating the school remaining non compliant. We advocate that the school retain the teachers AND become compliant.

The Board has acted in a manner calculated to put the school at risk, as:

1. On 10th February 2017, the Board, with reference to section 23 (2) of the TSC Act 2012, issued termination letters to 6 Primary School teachers because they had not yet completed TSC compliance procedures.

2. On 20th March 2017, the Board, with reference to a High Court Judgement from 2014, obtained waivers for TSC registration for non-compliant Kindergarten Teachers. This judgement was pursuant of section 23 (2) of the TSC Act, 2012. It was not a newly gazetted law that allowed an exception for Kindergarten teachers.

The Board has treated 2 groups of teachers to whom the same law applies, selectively, thus laying the School open to suit of law at the labour court.

The injustice of the decision to terminate these teachers, and the Board’s inflexibility about parents’ and teachers’ requests to let the teachers finish the term, are even more serious in terms of damage to the community. Requests were made in parents’ meetings on 25th and 26th April 2017.

3. On 21st March, 2017, the School Manager issued a letter to parents on behalf of the Board claiming that the above High Court Judgement was a new directive from the Ministry of Education. The Board was fully aware that the Court judgement was not a new law, but a 2014 jurisdiction argument between TSC and the Council of Governors. Thus we believe that the Board and Manager knowingly lied to parents in pursuit of a private agenda to dismiss teachers. Four teachers remain at risk of losing their jobs on May 10th, 2017.

4. The ECD waiver received on 21st March applies to the Class 2 teacher also but her notice has not been withdrawn.

5. On 4th May 2017 in a mediation meeting with parents of affected Primary Classes, the Board declined to take action to protect the school by obtaining TSC waivers for the Primary teachers or withdrawing their termination letters with immediate effect. TSC cannot issue a waiver without a request from the school. We believe this request has never been made, despite claims otherwise from the Board. When a simple oral request was made by the School Manager re Kindergarten teachers on 20th March, the waiver was immediately availed by the regulator, and the same would obtain for affected Primary teachers.

We are not advocating the school remaining non compliant. We advocate that the school retain the teachers AND become compliant.

6. Board members have been threatening and intimidating staff who talk to parents, in clear violation of the Board Charter. This creates an atmosphere of mistrust and unnecessary tension among staff whose primary duty is to nurture our children. Section 5.1 of the Board Charter states that Gathering and Sharing information are primary roles for all employees.

We would like fellow Christians and Kenyans of good will to know that over the last 15 years, there has been a deliberate push against the Church by the government, with a view of reducing the freedom of the Christian believers in Kenya. It was seen during the Constitutional reform process, and it has raised its ugly head once again recently in the guise of the proposed rules by the Registrar of Societies and the Code of Programming for broadcasting.

Stop Air Pollution in Imara Daima and its Environs (Mombasa Road)

RE: PETITION BY AREA RESIDENTS NEAR IMARA DAIMA RAILWAY STATION: A CRY FOR OUR HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT. COMPLAINT AGAINST RELEASE OF TOXIC GASES/FUMES INTO THE AIR: RESIDENTIAL ESTATES MOST AFFECTED OAKPARK, SUNRISE ESTATE, MUIMARA,VILLA FRANCA, IMARA DAIMA ESTATE, AMARA PARK AND IMARA GARDENS and ADJACENT NEIGHBOURS ALONG MOMBASA ROAD.

Kindly note we the residents/ inhabitants of the above mentioned Area, specifically the above stated estates have observed with concern the awful conduct of emission of toxic gases into the air. This illegal conduct is endangering our health and our precious lives. The gas/fumes are so toxic and most residents are now complaining of dry and irritable throats, headaches, nausea, tingling of the skin amongst other ailments. The children are having persistent sore throats and upper respiratory infections.

Some residents have reported to National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) but we are NOT aware of any substantive action so far taken.
As residents who care about our own health, and that of our loved ones, we are now writing to you officially, requesting you to resolve this complaint ONCE and FOR ALL.

We are aware that there are gas refilling companies just next to the residential area (check near the Softa Company, Chrolide exide company area) and we are shocked that Gas refilling companies have been allowed to operate so near a residential area. Another company called POWEREX LUBRICANTS LIMITED has been mentioned as being likely to be one of the pollutants.

We are only citizens without investigative expertise, so these are only our reasonable guesses judging from where the smell seems to be most perceived and smelt from. We surely expect that you will use tax payers’ money to ascertain who are the culprits, because that is why you have been set up as public offices.

The cover of today's Sunday Nation has a graphic picture of yesterday's terrorist attack on the Westgate mall, Nairobi.

It's not only unethical to have the picture on THE leading newspaper in this country, it's downright criminal!

As fate would have it, the poor lady is said to have died later on after the picture was taken. This is very heartbreaking not only to the family of the lady in question, but to the entire country as well.

Repeal the 8 Year Cap on Importing Vehicles to Kenya

In the year 2011, the Government of Kenya introduced a law barring the importation of any cars into the country that were more than 8 years old. This is in direct contravention to the constitution that allows me (a Kenyan citizen) the freedom to own property.

The 8 year rule, does not benefit the country in any way and instead actually harms the economy. The Vintage Car industry is a potential employer of thousands (Car dealers, mechanics, Jua Kali artisans) of youth who find themselves currently unemployed.
