Train Announcements in English at Delft Station; Support DISS!

Undoubtedly, the Technical University of Delft is one of the most striking aspects of this small and quaint city, Delft. TU Delft, as it is known popularly, educates over 14,000 students each academic year, of which, over 1500 of these students are non-EU internationals, that are unable to speak Dutch.
Many of which might be learning the language, but are just not at the level yet to understand Train Station Announcements!
Not to mention the number of tourists that visit this beautiful city each year, accounting for over a million registered tourists!
Keeping this in mind, we at DISS (Delft International Student Society) have created this petition to be signed by all those who agree with us for the Delft Municipality to include English announcements at the Delft train station along with the already existing Dutch ones!
Thank you for your support!

Help Kinderplaneet Stay!

English below

Kinderplaneet has been around now for three years in Hilvertshof..Unfortunatly they are ready to kick us out of the building to make way for the big companies to which we cannot compeate with the rent price.

We feel that we bring a new and friendly service to children and too the parents. It would be a great shame to the community if Kinderplaneet was no longer around. Not only for parents but for Hilvertshof itself bwcause parents can go shopping and therefore spend more. We hope with this petition Hilvertshof can see that.

If you feel the same please sign to try and keep us up and running!!!!!

Save Languages in Groningen

Last year the University of Groningen decided to merge most of its Modern Language Programmes into a single programme: European Languages and Cultures, featuring the study of 10 European languages from a European perspective. But this new programme was barely in its third month when the University announced plans to reduce the number of languages from 10 to 6. As of September 2013, students will not longer have the possibility to choose Danish, Norwegian, Finnish or Hungarian.

However, the value of these languages extends well beyond the university walls. Cultural exchanges between countries large and small are of great economic importance. Accordingly, the study of languages and cultures at academic level is vital –language students go on to work as writers, communicators, translators, interpreters, editors etc. If the University of Groningen’s plans to discontinue four modern language programmes take effect, unique expertise will be drained from the country, with devastating effects in the long term. With this petition, we urge the University of Groningen to reconsider these plans, and to continue to offer Danish, Finnish, Hungarian and Norwegian as part of the European Languages and Cultures programme. If you want to support our cause, please sign this petition and spread the word!

Aziatisch woonzorgcentrum

NO HEALTH-DESTROYING WIND TURBINES IN OUR HABITAT

We, the people of the Netherlands, are asking for support. In our densely populated country, they are planning huge wind farms next to our homes. In spite of all the reports about negative health aspects caused by industrial wind turbines, the requests for more wind farms are piling up.

We are afraid that many people will get sick and therefore we want to ask the government to stop the planning of building more turbines.

Apart from the health aspects, we are afraid that there will be a large environmental impact, no nature left and that we will not be able to leave because the houses become unmarketable.

Therefore, we ask you to sign this petition in order to help us with our struggle.

Second season of No. 6!

The story takes place in the "ideal" and perfect city known as "No. 6". Shion, a boy raised in the elite and privileged environment of his home, gives shelter to another boy, who only gives his name as 'Nezumi' (Meaning Mouse or Rat) on the former's 12th birthday.

After spending a rainy night with his new friend, Shion discovers the next morning that Nezumi has disappeared without a trace. Four years later, Shion experiences a spate of incidents around him in which a deadly infection by parasitic bees causes its victims to age rapidly and start to decompose at an alarming rate. Shion's co-worker is one of the victims and Shion is arrested on suspicion of murder.

While Shion is being transported to the Correctional Institute, Nezumi appears and rescues him. Shion begins to find out the hidden truth behind the Ideal City No.6

Save pure mathematics at the VU University Amsterdam

As with most universities in the Netherlands, the VU University Amsterdam suffers from financial underfunding. All faculties and all departments at the VU are asked to take measures to deal with this problem.

For the Department of Mathematics a committee of applied mathematicians has put forward a proposal to close the Geometry Section, which consists of six tenured positions and focuses on algebraic K theory, algebraic topology, and general/geometric topology. At the same time, some of the funds freed up by the abolition of the Geometry Section are to be used for the creation of two additional positions in the Analysis Section. This proposal has received the endorsement of the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and of the Executive Board of the university. Two members of the Geometry Section will retire in the next two years and closure of the section will allow for termination of the other four tenured positions. Thus, the proposal's drastic measures will merely cut the total number of positions by two.

Of the four positions slated for termination, one is in general/geometric topology and has been held since 2001 by Jan Dijkstra. The other three people were appointed less than four years ago: Dietrich Notbohm, Rob de Jeu, and Tilman Bauer. This introduced algebraic K-theory and algebraic topology as new research subjects at the VU. In 2010, a research evaluation of all Dutch mathematics departments by an international committee took place. The committee welcomed these changes very much, stating that strong young people provided new impetus to the group in mainstream mathematics and offered promise for the future.

What are the consequences of the closure of the Geometry Section for the university? Algebra, algebraic topology, and general/geometric topology will vanish. Algebraic K-theory and general/geometric topology will cease to exist in the Netherlands, and only Utrecht will be left with research in algebraic topology. No pure mathematicians will be on the staff anymore. The university will give up central areas of mathematics and adopt a narrow research profile. The education of students offered at the VU will also become much narrower, which may lead to a drop in the yearly intake of students, and will certainly compromise the academic chances for VU graduates.

This petition asks for a reconsideration of this plan. By signing it you will help to save the Geometry Section at the Department of Mathematics at the VU!
