Public funding deserves public viewing

Sporting teams and events have become a multi billion to trillion dollar industry. These costs are subsidized by public interest and often times with public tax dollars. The tax dollars profits are realized in private business profits and valuations. For the sports team. With the cost of player salaries broadcast revenue is a large income stream for the sports franchise with more and more of this income stream require premium streaming cost of additional hundreds if not thousands of dollars required for a yearly subscription.

If Sports authorities are requiring public funding of stadium and franchise cost through state and government revenue streams, these teams benifit if from public funding should be available to the public that has funded these costs.

Currently the Minnesota Wild is seeking 300 million in public tax subsidies which should not be considered unless broadcast rights are granted for public viewing.

Protect Women's Sports

Lia Thomas, a transgender swimmer who was born biologically male, is dominating women's swimming records during her time at University of Pennsylvania. Before identifying as a female, Thomas competed for 3 years on the Men's team and only sat one year out before competing as a female. Thomas has followed the rules set in place by the NCAA regarding transgender athletes, however, the rules are unfair to biological women. After identifying as female, she broke the Ivy League Record in the 500 free, and is close to multiple American records. She recently qualified for Division 1 NCAA's, and is seeded in the top 3 for multiple events. In an article by Carrie Sheffield on the New York Post, she highlights a scientific review by the Independent Women's Law Center. According to the review, men naturally have bigger hearts and lungs, making swimming easier for them. Additionally, they possess greater bone densities, such as a wider wingspan, which testosterone blockers can't alter. Finally, they discuss that although hormone therapy can reduce muscle size, it can't reduce it to female levels. Lia Thomas has a clear biological advantage, and is taking away the spotlight and opportunities from female athletes who have been training hard their entire lives.

SCCA Area 11 Director Nomination

Those of us in the SCCA know how personally meaningful the club is to each one of us. We know that our lives often revolve around its events, its members, and the competitive spirit that we bring to these events. This is a great organization with a great history, and we all want to see it thrive well into the future.

Area 11's Director position is up for election this October, and I am seeking nominations to be eligible to run for this position. I have been a member of the SCCA for fourteen years, I am currently the Arizona SCCA Regional Executive, have served on its Board Of Directors for twelve years, and I am an avid racer. I am also a well-known aerospace and automotive entrepreneur and author, and I have extensive board-level experience. I am well qualified to serve in this position, but most importantly, I want to make the SCCA a better organization with the brightest future possible. This begins by electing the right national-level Directors that can guide the SCCA into a new era with a whole new generation of members.

Please help me achieve this goal by nominating and supporting my run for Area 11 Director. Your support deeply humbles me.

Kind regards,

Petition for Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM/MOE) to maintain chess as a sport in Malaysian schools under MSSM

"Your brain is like your muscle and it regresses if you don't use it."
-	Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister and Patron of Malaysian Chess Federation.

While the body needs physical exercise to stay fit, the brain requires mind activities as a form of exercise to continue staying fit. And what better way to stimuli the brain by having it to work and train via chess – the ultimate game for the mind. And there is no better way to start having the mind to exercise than at a very young age in order to explore its full potential to develop and grow.

With those points in mind, it came as a huge surprise by many when Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM) had recently discussed and almost concluded that Chess will be out from its calendar by 2020. Without any rhymes nor reasons, chess faces a near extinction as a sport for young kids in school.

Chess has many followings around the world with 194 countries affiliated to the World Chess Body (FIDE). In Malaysia alone, there are almost 11,000 chess players registered with the world body, a growth of almost 10% in just 8 months. With the game being contested at the schools and university levels, and at government and private sectors sports meet, chess is a popular sport that is cheap to maintain, good to learn and easy to set up. And beyond all that, chess continue to maintain its competitive value, as a knowledge enrichment tool and promotes interactive communication between players.

Chess made its grand appearance in Olympics as an exhibition sport at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Australia, a year after gaining recognition from the International Olympic Committee to include chess as a sport. In ASEAN, chess was contested in Indonesia in 2011 and Myanmar in 2013 and will again make its appearance at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines.

It is almost unthinkable that chess is on the verge of being erased as a sport in our educational system, and those that are making these decisions should review chess beyond its value as a “just a sport”. Because chess is more than just a game on a board – chess is an activity that can help to teach and educate young children the value of patience and discipline, the importance of planning and reasoning, a valuable tool to hone their analytical skills and strategic thinking, and when times get tough, it teaches humility on how to lose gracefully, to learn how to evaluate your mistakes, restart your game and maintain your focus to continuously move forward for a better ending.

Don’t let the mind go to waste – develop, compete but more importantly, play chess!
