Save the Arts

Radical cuts to current levels of arts funding will decimate what has been one of the UK's chief success stories over the past 20 years, and will bring an end to the UK's reign as a global capital for culture.

Arts organisations all accept the need to reduce their budgets. But while the arts can possibly sustain a ten percent funding cut, the 25-30% cuts that the government is currently considering would result in the closure of many smaller arts organizations and would also have a crippling effect on the functioning of the country’s leading arts venues.

The arts are a major employer, and they generate far more revenue than they cost to fund. In addition they are a major attraction for tourism in the UK. While cutting arts funding may save money in the short term, in the long run it risks undermining what has been one of the country’s most vibrant areas of growth over the past fifteen years, and destroying one of the national achievements that we should be most proud of.

Reinstate Hank Williams

This petition calls for the reinstatement of Opry legend, and country music star, Hank Williams. Fifty years have passed since the tragic and untimely death of country music's greatest performer, who made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry on June 11th, 1949.

A few years later, in 1952, Hiram Hank Williams was asked to leave the Opry -- with the intention that he would sober up and make a return to the stage that he loved so much. Before he could make that return, he passed on, in the back seat of a car on the way to an Ohio show. Even now, Hank Williams has yet to be reinstated to the Opry.

Hank Williams has been one of the most influential artists to ever record; changing the face of music, and the way that we view country music. Since his passing in 1953, he has posthumously achieved numerous rewards and achievements. In 1961, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and a few years later, he was added to the Country Music Hall of Fame Walkway of Stars.

In 1973, he was the recipient of the Pioneer Award by the Academy of Country Music. He received a Grammy for 'Your Cheatin' Heart' in 1983, and was then inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. That same year he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Life Magazine even ranked Hank Williams #1 on the 'Most Important People in Country Music' list. Within his short years with us on earth, he had 11 #1 singles, including 'Lovesick Blues,' 'Kaw-Liga,' as well as 25 other Top 10 Singles.

We, the undersigned, feel that it is past due for Hank Williams' reinstatement to the Grand Ole Opry. Hank Williams was one of the most influential people to ever record or write music, and his untimely death made it impossible for his to 'redeem' himself in the Opry's eyes, but after 50 years we feel that his legacy has more than made up for any objections that the Opry may have had about his personal life. His lyrics and music helped create everything traditional country music became.

Sincerely,
The fans of Hank Williams, Sr.

Save Knight Rider

Knight Rider is a good show with a lot of potential. NBC ordered 22 episodes, the show was poorly received for two main reasons; one being not everyone, including myself, realized until recently the series was a reinvention of Knight Rider.

We were led to believe the show was a continuation of the story, as the 2008 movie was truly a continuation of the original Knight Rider. Secondly, the transformer and CGI effects weakened the credibility of the characters. To be blunt the fans want and action adventure series, not a transformers and CGI intensive show.

NBC quietly cut Knight Riders season order 22 to 17 episodes. NBC stresses that "Knight Rider" isn't canceled -- but the downsized order isn't a good sign for the remake.

NEW[the NBC ordered reboot of Knight Rider has returned the series its originally represent storyline. The series is a continuation of the original series and increasing in popularity.]

Save "Doctor Who," Netflix!

Many users of the online streaming service, Netflix have reported that the science fiction television series, "Doctor Who" is set to be removed from the service on February 1, 2015.

This has sent fans of the series into an uproar and not for the first time. In 2013, Netflix removed (from its UK site) episodes of "Doctor Who" from the period of 1963–1996 (which is collectively known as the "Classic Era" of the series).

Now, all episodes from the period of 2005–present will be removed. Unless, you do something about it.

Sign this petition to save the cult classic, "Doctor Who" from being removed from Netflix.

Save Spongebob Squarepants

Recent whisperings on the net have indicated that the creator of Spongebob Squarepants is no longer interested in making new episodes. Furthermore, Nickelodeon is reportedly about to cancel several other shows, Invader Zim, Hey Arnold and other low budget cartoons which make Nickelodeon such a great channel for kids and their families to watch.

I created this petition because my son and our entire family find these shows, Spongebob in particular to be very funny and a big part of our television enjoyment. Let's Save Spongebob!

Save Polaroid Film!

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/technology/AP-Polaroid-Film.html?ex=1203138000&en=6ad6ca7de02ede1d&ei=5070&emc=eta1

Polaroid film was a technological breakthrough in the world of photography. In late 2008, Polaroid Co. plans to entirely discontinue their line of remaining polaroid films (Type 600 and Spectra are among the popular used labels).

This is a classic, time-and-tried art form. Don't let them stop manufacturing it!

Update May 2012: Since Polaroid Co filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, its technology has resurfaced. Since March 2010, instant film materials for Vintage Polaroid cameras have again become available on the market, developed and manufactured by a group called The Impossible Project, at the former Polaroid production plant in Enschede, The Netherlands.

Save the UK Film Council

"Since its creation the UK Film Council has been the cornerstone of the British film industry and the funder of most of the big cultural film initiatives – we have backed more than 900 films, shorts and features, entertained more than 200 million people and helped to generate approximately £700 million at the box-office worldwide"

The above is from the website of the UK Film Council.

The UK Film Council was founded in 2000. Since its creation the UK's core film industry has increased its contribution to our economy by 50% to £4.3 billion, and directly provides jobs for almost 44,000 people.

Attacking cultural spending in the face of economic hardship is short-sighted at the best of times, but unlike financial black holes such as the 2012 Olympics the UK Film Council represents an extremely wise investment by the last government. Every £1 invested by the UK Film Council generates £5 in box office revenues, and contributes to our reputation as a world leader in the field of contemporary cinema.

Please show your support for our superb film industry by signing the petition below and following the campaign at Best For Film, an independent cinema website helping to co-ordinate our efforts.

NB you can also show your support for the campaign on Facebook.
