STOP the Grave Human Rights Violations in Bahrain

On February 14th, the youth of Bahrain started a peaceful movement demanding constitutional reform & more participation in the running of the country’s affairs under the umbrella of a constitutional monarchy.

However, over the span of one month, this movement was faced with a brutal crackdown by the Bahrain regime, culminating into a full-blown attack by the Bahrain police, army and national guard aided by the GCC joint forces led by Saudi Arabia, on the very basic human rights of the people of Bahrain.

This led to grave systematic human rights violations encompassing:
•	Over two-dozen extrajudicial deaths; including 4 dying in custody, with clear marks of torture, in the span of 10 days,
•	Hundreds wounded, and not consulting any medical facility in fear of arrest,
•	Close to 800 arbitrary detainees, including 40 women, all held incommunicado,
•	Around 40 cases of enforced disappearances,
•	Close to 2,000 registered cases of job dismissals from around 30 government-run institutions/companies
•	The demolishing of 15 licensed & registered places of worship belonging to only one religious sect and the prevention of religious practices, and
•	The dismissal of a number of students from elementary education and the ending of government-sponsored higher education for many students locally & abroad.

This is of course added to the systematic crackdown on the right to “freedom of opinion & expression”, “freedom of assembly & association”, and the “freedom of movement” (as many are denied the right to leave the country). This has culminated in what is a clear “sectarian cleansing” process against a majority religious sect in the country. All this has been in an effort to silence any further dissent.

It is important to note that Bahrain has ratified all International Human Rights Treaties, and is a current member of the UN Human Rights Council. However, in spite of the blunt and systematic violations, the international community has remained silent.

SUPPORT Bahrain's Athletes

On February 14th, the youth of Bahrain started a peaceful movement demanding constitutional reform & more participation in the running of the country’s affairs under the umbrella of a constitutional monarchy.

However, over the span of one month, this movement was faced with a brutal crackdown by the Bahrain regime, culminating into a full-blown attack by the Bahrain police, army and national guard aided by the GCC joint forces led by Saudi Arabia, on the very basic human rights of the people of Bahrain. This led to over two dozen deaths, hundreds injured, over six hundred detainees, over one thousand job dismissals, the demolishing of places of worship and the prevention of religious practices; in what is a clear “sectarian cleansing” process against a majority sect in the country. All this has been in an effort to silence any further dissent.

During this movement, and as an integral part of the society, the athletes in the country also organized a rally in support of these demands for reform. The Bahrain regime replied to this rally by indefinitely suspending and banning around 200 athletes from any local, regional or international play on charges of “supporting the popular revolution in the country”, according to a government official. The regime went further to arrest about 10 athletes incommunicado, along with several staff members of the Bahrain International Circuit from their workplace.

It is important to note that these athletes include regionally and internationally renowned ones, including but not limited to:

•	A’ala Hubail (arrested footballer); the 2004 Asian Cup Golden Boot winner, helping Bahrain in the process to reach its first semi-final round at the regional stage. He is also a trained paramedic and EMT who was also acting as a volunteer nurse treating the injured during the brutal crackdown of protesters. His brother, Mohammed (another National team player), has also been arrested.

•	Jafar Abdulqader (arrested handball player); also a national handball team player, helping Bahrain reach its first ever Handball World Cup participation in 2011. Other players from that national team have been arrested and suspended.

•	Tariq Al Farsani (arrested bodybuilder); an Asian Bodybuilding Champion.

The list extends to many other sports, and the Bahrain Football, Handball, Volleyball and Basketball Federations, along with the Bahrain Olympic Committee, have all backed this decision.

Stop internet censorship in Bahrain

On 14 January 2009, local newspapers disclosed a ministerial order by the new minister of culture and information addressed to all telecommunications companies and Internet service providers, calling on them to prevent access to websites that were banned by the ministry.

This is the first resolution issued by the minister this year and the first administrative resolution to give sharp and clear instructions to telecommunications companies and Internet service providers to prevent "all the customary ways to access blocked sites," whether through Internet addresses or through the use of alternative servers (proxies) or any other way.

The MOI ordered ISP’s to censor “inappropriate” content on the Internet, compulsorily, the Bahraini people will not be given a choice to view this material; it will simply become inaccessible by all Bahraini’s. These restrictions will put Bahrain on the same level as countries such as China, Cuba, Iran and North Korea and Saudi.

The issue is with “inappropriate” as a definition, the websites that are blocked at the moment include Opposition websites, Human rights, Public forums, personal blog journals, some google services, Pornographic material and Gambling. Many websites that promote sectarian hatred on the other hand are still accessible from any computer on the island.

Inappropriate content will be defined and redefined by the government from time to time as they see fit depending on their Personal views and political stance. This is unacceptable and an intolerable restriction on our freedom of speech (which is the freedom to speak freely without censorship or limitation) and our freedom of information.

The actions of the Bahraini authorities violate freedom of expression as stipulated in Article 19 of the ICCPR signed by Bahrain on 20 September 2006.

If this trend continues, the freedom of expression in Bahrain will take another blow and dwarf even more We should at least retain our right to choose.

People who do wish to have unrestricted access to the Internet should be able to opt for this. Government should not have unfettered control over our freedom of speech, expression and freedom of information.

Stop the Violence in Bahrain

Throughout 2011 much of the Middle East has been engulfed by political turmoil and unrest; Egypt, Yemen, Libya and Syria. Much of this upheaval has received coverage to the point of saturation by the western media. Furthermore, throughout this time the US State Department, and the governments of most other western nations have supported democratic reforms and regime change.

One exception has been the Kingdom of Bahrain. Very has little been shown and very little has been said. One exception was the excellent coverage provided by SBS' Dateline program, with journalist Yarra Bou Melhem. This program, entitled Bahrain's Dark Secret aired on Sunday 3 April, 2011. Sadly, this has been one of the very few programs in Australia to expose the horrendous violation of human rights issues in Bahrain. While protesters are no longer taking to the streets, the political regime which supports King Hamed ibn Isa Khalifa continues to intimidate and harass people in their hundreds and thousands.

The great sadness in all of this is the silence of the western powers who have been deafening in their condemnation of Gadafi, Assad, Moubarak etc.

Why does the United States (in particular) remain silent despite the ongoing and increasing atrocities being committed in Bahrain? Surely, the convenience of having its Navy's 5th Fleet based there hasn't bought its silence?

While quickly and rightfully condemning the human rights violations and abuses in Libya, Syria and other parts of the Middle East, the United States has remained disturbingly silent throughout the last two months, as Bahrain's regime has actively engaged in the suppression and persecution of the Shiite majority.

In response to protests calling for democratic reforms people have been gassed, shot and attacked in the streets; summarily dismissed from their workplaces (by the hundreds) arbitrarily placed under curfew and house arrest subject to ongoing harassment and intimidation.

Security forces have arrested, detained and tortured hundreds of people. The whereabouts of most are unknown. Even hospitals have become a target for the attacking of political opponents, and innocent bystanders and the medical staff who seek to treat them.

Although condemned by Human Rights groups around the world the response of the United States and other western nations has been ... silence. When the demonstrations first broke there were one or two 'voices of concern but these have been very quickly muted.
