Mandatory Almond Pasteurization is WRONG!!!

Back in September of 2007, raw almonds available in the USA, Canada and Mexico, were declared to be no longer "truly raw" due to a mandate passed by the USDA, FDA and the California Almond Board, announcing that all almonds including organic almonds, must be pasteurized.

The problem is the law had been passed with little public input(if any) or notification whatsoever. In addition all pasteurized almonds available in the marketplace are still labeled as raw almonds. Can this be considered fraudulence or an out right lie? Are you willing to give up your food freedom choices?

The primary reasons for passing this law are two isolated outbreaks of salmonella, in conjunction with conventional almond farms a few years ago. To the best of our knowledge no salmonella outbreaks have EVER been associated with organic almonds.

Within the past 10 years tomatoes, spinach, green onions, peanuts, grapes, melons, lettuce, and sprouts have all been linked to salmonella outbreaks. Does that mean we should eliminate all fresh produce? Absolutely not!!!

Almonds, the heartbeat of all nuts, literally, have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease, a rich source of calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, protein, fiber and antioxidants to name a few. These amazing and life enhancing health benefits, will be devastatingly reduced if not completely eliminated in the pasteurization process. Three of the potential suggested methods of pasteurization are:

-Propylene oxide(PPO) fumigation(propylene oxide was also used as an insecticidal fumigant till 1988 when its registration was terminated. California prop.65 rates PPO as a carcinogen. Cited from www.mbow.org)

-High heat(which degrades the integrity of the nuts and enzyme structure).

-Steam pasteurization (will also further devalue the nutrients, enzyme activity and antioxidants.)

This is a call to all those who care about their health, we need to join forces by bringing this to the attention of everyone from the mass media to the common consumer before it goes any further than almonds! It is our basic right to choose unprocessed foods! We have created a petition that we will present to the California Almond Board, the FDA and the USDA. PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION! E-mail us at this petition with any other questions, media relations, ideas or information you may have relevant to this cause.

SUCCESS UPDATE!!!!!

In addition to signing this petition PLEASE donate money NOW to the Cornucopia Institute who has had tremendous victories fighting this mandate in Federal court. The Cornucopia Institute has led the way in winning this fight and they have almost won, but they need more money to support lawyers fees. The possibility of this mandate being reversed is an absolute reality and is right around the corner. Please read about their progress and support them by going here http://www.cornucopia.org/almonds/

The Cornucopia Institute absolutely believes that they will win this case and this means a victory not just for raw almonds, but for health freedom in general! This is huge. Please help us make it happen!

PLEASE LINK THIS PETITION TO YOUR YOUR SITE AND YOUR SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES. See link at the bottom of the page.

WHEN YOU ADD YOUR SIGNATURE TO THE PETITION, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR E-MAIL SO WE CAN ALERT YOU WITH NEWS, UPDATES & FUND-RAISING STRATEGIES SO WE CAN OVERTURN THIS DECISION. THANKS

Urge Clorox to take back and recycle used Brita water filter cartridges

Whereas:

* Many concerned North Americans have given up bottled water and switched to filtered tap water in order to save the billions of plastic bottles that are littered, landfilled, or incinerated each year.

* Brita is the #1 pour-through water filter system in the U.S. and Canada. It is the #1 faucet-mount filter in Canada and the #2 faucet-mount filter in the U.S.

* Brita filter cartridges consist of activated carbon housed inside a plastic body which cannot be opened by the consumer for refilling or recycling. The plastic body must be landfilled or incinerated each time the filter is changed.

* Plastic is a non-renewable resource made from petroleum. It is not biodegradable, lingering in the environment virtually forever. Plastic can attract and accumulate oil-based toxins, and the production of plastic is fraught with environmental hazards. The more we are able to reuse/recycle the plastic products we produce rather than creating new ones, the less ecological harm we will cause.

* In Europe, the original Brita GmbH company has created a take-back recycling program for its filter cartridges. They are collected at in-store sites and shipped to Brita’s recycling center, where they are dismantled and the components reused.

* In North America, The Brita Products Company is owned by The Clorox Company. The Clorox Company has no such recycling program in place for Brita cartridges. In fact, there is currently no way to recycle or refill Brita filter cartridges in North America at all.

* The Clorox Company has made "green" strides recently by its acquisition of the Burt's Bees line of natural personal care products, its development of Green Works natural cleaning products, and its promotion of the Filter for Good campaign. These steps are good. But we think Clorox can do better.

Mandatory Labeling of Palm Oil

Every hour over 300 football fields of pristine, tropical rainforest is destroyed to make room for the establishment and expansion of palm oil plantations. Huge swaths of rainforest are burnt to the ground, leaving thousands of innocent animals, including the endangered Orangutan, helpless. Local tribes who have lived in the forest for thousands of years are forcibly removed, often without compensation.

BUT it doesn't have to be this way. There is an abundance of degraded land and grassland that could easily be converted to palm oil plantations. The only reason companies destroy the rainforest is to selfishly profit from the sale of the timber.

To help support sustainable palm oil, the first step is for palm oil to be labelled on food products. Currently, with no mandatory labelling, consumers do not know if the food products they purchase support this destruction. You have a right to know!

Passed in the sente on the 23rd June, the truth in labeling bill is set to be presented to the House of Representatives as early as July 4th. To show your support for this bill, please sign our petition.

Visit http://www.truthinlabelling.com.au/palmoil.html for more information on the Bill being put forward by Nick Xenophon (Independent Senator for South Australia).

Independent Senator for South Australia, Nick Xenophon, Leader of the Australian Greens, Senator Bob Brown and Leader of the Nationals in the Senate, Senator Barnaby Joyce, are calling for greater truth in labelling.

In 2009, the three Senators introduced the Food Standards Amendment (Truth in Labelling Laws) Bill and the Food Standards Amendment (Truth in Labelling Laws – Palm Oil) Bill.

These Bills address the issues of labelling of Country of Origin and Palm Oil, both of which consumers have a right to be informed about.

Re: Labelling - Legally we should surely be protected by 'The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008' under Part 2, Section 6 'Misleading omissions'.

The majority of UK Consumers do not need costly Official Certification on products eg.Halal or Kosher Certification, because they are not interested in a products authenticity - they just want to know in plain English if products have any religious association and this can be clear with a simple 'RS' Label.

The Over-Production of Ritually Slaughtered meat in the UK must STOP.... the majority of the population do not follow religious dietary laws and just require normal meat. It seems that Halal over-production was allowed to meet increased demand, but that demand is false, as it only happened, because we have all been unwittingly buying & eating UNLABELLED HALAL for more than 10 years... even in the House of Commons!

UK Statutory Instrument 1995 No. 731
The Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995, SCHEDULE 12 Regulations 21 and 22 ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS FOR SLAUGHTER BY A RELIGIOUS METHOD specifies that meat is slaughtered by a muslim - for the food of muslims (or by a jew - for the food of jews).

No where does it state that the religious exemption can be used to slaughter for the mass mainstream market.

This ritual slaughter method is a backward step when we consider animal welfare (even with a Reversible-Stun!) and this amount of halal production & distribution certainly seems to step outside of Rules of the Original License of Exemption!

Why is the government allowing over-production of 7th Century Ritually Slaughtered Halal meat in quantities that far exceed the needs of the muslim minority in 21st Century Britain? 95% of the UK population are NOT muslim and these consumers do not require any kind of Religious Regulation or Certification in the name of allah. The majority require conventional meat that has been slaughtered by traditional methods with proper stunning.

British Consumers need a simple an 'RS' Label suitable for All Religious Slaughtered meat & its bi-products no matter how it is stunned or what its source is.

ARTICLE 9 HUMAN RIGHTS ACT: Freedom of Conscience - gives us the right to religious and secular freedom, ie to not be forced to participate in religious rites. Dedicating this meat to a foreign god violates this right: What we have now in Britain is forced participation in another's religion without consent. Christians, Sikhs & Hindus are specifically instructed not to eat this meat...

We need to bypass these irrelevant arguments about stunning: Low-Stun, Post-Stun, Reversible Stun, No Stun; because we Non-Muslims don't need to know if halal is 'authentic halal' or not... that is a matter for muslims to agree on. All halal authorities agree the livestock must be conscious and alive when it is slaughtered and they say the livestock must be able to hear the Bismillah prayer. Notably those Halal Authorities that DO allow stunning are breaking the rules here too, with their Reversible Stun to immobilise, as the level of current used in this method is way below that recommended by the European Food Safety Authority and DEFRA... sadly we see Standards dropping as Regulations are not followed now that would ensure an animal is fully unconscious & permanently insensible to suffering and pain at point of killing. We say NO to Reversible Stunning [RS]. [Addition 1/1/2013] We call on DEFRA to ENFORCE the new WATOK Regulations.

RS' can also stand for 'Religious Standard' and could therefore be used on ALL Products that come under any Religious Standard eg. Halal Products & Services including Meat manufacturing, processing & packaging; abattoirs and butchers for Halal slaughtering techniques and procedures, Pharmaceutical Industries & Financial products; Cosmetics, toiletries, personal care, etc.; Imported Products; Eating establishments, Restaurants, fast food chains, canteens and other food outlets.

Anywhere & anything associated with Ritual Slaughter, Reversible Stunning or a Religious Standard needs labelling 'RS' so we fully understand what we are choosing to buy & eat.

Simple 'RS' labelling can be used on both Halal & Kosher products - solely for the benefit of British consumers & their Right to choose. We want profits to go back into the British economy; not for example, as with halal products, to be channelled towards Islamic ends.

We appeal to those in power to authorise the writing of a suitable policy that will make Labelling ALL Religiously Slaughtered meat a Legal Requirement by Law, so that Shoppers & Consumers all know what they are buying & eating.
Consumers need to be able to identify whether they are buying or eating conventional meat or RS meat, conventional products or RS products.

We fear that if we don't do something NOW, we may find that normal meat will be under-produced and soon become very expensive... which would then force non-muslims to have to buy halal with no alternative.

Please make recommendations to label all 'RS' Products by Law to protect the right of the majority of UK Consumers to be able to have a real choice when they make a purchasing decision of what they use, buy or eat.

Petition Against Deletion Of IMVU Mature Products from User Accounts

Summary:

IMVU is going to render products that only AP Pass holders can use unusable, after a significant amount of community members have purchased it with their own money. It is an error on their end they have not fixed and once fixed, will make a large amount of product unavailable to users who have purchased them with credits, which are bought with money.

IMVU AP Holders do not want this happen. AP Holders cannot trade or sell these items. AP Holders can only use these items with other AP holders.

AP Holders are going to be the ones who will suffer the consequences by losing out on product they honestly came by because it was sold in the catalog. AP Holders should not be the ones punished for select individuals who abused the system by selling Mature products either through the regular IMVU purchasing procedures or via another off-site website.
One of the bugs we are working on right now is that, apparently, [formerly] Mature products can still be used after they are marked Mature. Even worse, there are sites out there that have figured out a way to sell hidden products. So, essentially, they are selling products that are marked Mature. We will be rectifying this in short order and involving the authorities where needed.
This petition is now closed. IMVU has disabled mature products and is currently undergoing a reimbursement process to all its Access Pass members who have Mature Content in their inventories. More information can be obtained here at the IMVU Access Pass Holders Only Forum: http://www.imvu.com/catalog/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpbb2&file=viewforum.php&f=23
