TENS OF THOUSANDS of migrant birds are being illegally slaughtered in Cyprus annually to feed an appetite for illegal “ambelopoulia” delicacies. Trappers using limesticks and mist nets are making huge profits while threatening Europe’s natural heritage. You can help generate the political will to end this indiscriminate killing by signing BirdLife Cyprus’s petition to relevant Ministers.

Bird trapping in Cyprus has been taking place for many years. It began as a way of supplementing what was once a meager peasant diet. This is no longer the case. Trapping in Cyprus has become a large-scale, high-tech, lucrative business run by criminals. Trapped birds are usually supplied to restaurants that are illegally serving them - a dozen of trapped birds could be sold up to 80 euros. The competent authorities estimate this illegal business to be of the order of 15 million euros per year.

Bird trapping is illegal under Cyprus and European legislation. Trappers in Cyprus use mist nets and limesticks which are non selective methods of capture. 122 bird species have been recorded trapped on nets and limesticks, of which 58 bird species are listed as threatened by BirdLife International and/or the EU Birds Directive.

Moreover it is taking place on a large scale. BirdLife Cyprus (http://www.birdlifecyprus.org/) has been running a systematic monitoring programme on trapping in Cyprus since 2002 and estimates that hundreds of thousands of birds are killed every year. The last 4 years there has been a dramatic increase in trapping in Cyprus and urgent measures are needed to stop this slaughter.

The large scale and non selective nature of illegal trapping in Cyprus constitutes an ecological disaster. A recent “European Conference on Illegal Killing of Birds” that took place in Larnaca (Cyprus) in July 2011 (http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/cultureheritage/nature/bern/News/Cyprus/Cyprus_en.asp) concluded on a clear “zero tolerance” message and BirdLife Cyprus wants to see words transformed into actions. For this reason we are undertaking this petition to put pressure for greater political will to stop illegal bird trapping in Cyprus.

ΔΕΚΑΔΕΣ ΧΙΛΙΑΔΕΣ αποδημητικά πουλιά θανατώνονται παράνομα στην Κύπρο κάθε χρόνο για να ικανοποιήσουν την όρεξη για τα παράνομα «αμπελοπούλια». Οι παγιδευτές, που χρησιμοποιούν ξόβεργα και δίχτυα, βγάζουν τεράστια κέρδη ενώ απειλούν τη φυσική κληρονομιά της Ευρώπης. Μπορείτε να συνεισφέρετε στην κινητοποίηση πολιτικής βούλησης για τον τερματισμό αυτής της αδιάκριτης θανάτωσης πτηνών υπογράφοντας το ψήφισμα διαμαρτυρίας του Πτηνολογικού Συνδέσμου Κύπρου που θα αποσταλεί στους αρμόδιους υπουργούς.

Η παγίδευση πτηνών στην Κύπρο γίνεται εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια. Όταν ξεκίνησε αποτελούσε συμπλήρωμα διατροφής των φτωχών χωρικών. Τώρα όμως αυτό δεν ισχύει πλέον. Η παγίδευση στην Κύπρο έχει γίνει μια μεγάλης κλίμακας, υψηλής τεχνολογίας, κερδοφόρα επιχείρηση που ελέγχεται από το οργανωμένο έγκλημα. Τα παγιδευμένα πουλιά συνήθως προορίζονται για εστιατόρια όπου σερβίρονται παράνομα – μια δωδεκάδα παγιδευμένων πουλιών μπορεί να κοστίζει μέχρι και 80 ευρώ. Οι αρμόδιες αρχές υπολογίζουν ότι ο τζίρος από αυτή την παράνομη επιχείρηση είναι της τάξης των 15 εκατομμυρίων ευρώ τον χρόνο.

Η παγίδευση πτηνών είναι παράνομη σύμφωνα με την Κυπριακή και την Ευρωπαϊκή νομοθεσία. Οι παγιδευτές χρησιμοποιούν δίχτυα και ξόβεργα που αποτελούν μη επιλεκτικές μεθόδους παγίδευσης. Σύμφωνα με στοιχεία ως και 122 είδη πτηνών έχουν καταγραφεί πιασμένα σε δίχτυα και ξόβεργα, εκ των οποίων τα 58 είναι απειλούμενα είδη σύμφωνα με το BirdLife International και / ή την Ευρωπαϊκή Οδηγία για τα Πτηνά.

Επιπρόσθετα η παγίδευση γίνεται σε μεγάλη κλίμακα. Ο Πτηνολογικός Σύνδεσμος Κύπρου (http://www.birdlifecyprus.org/) από το 2002 διατηρεί συστηματικό πρόγραμμα παρακολούθησης της παγίδευσης στην Κύπρο και υπολογίζει ότι εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες πουλιά σκοτώνονται κάθε χρόνο. Τα τελευταία 4 χρόνια υπάρχει μια δραματική αύξηση στα επίπεδα της παγίδευσης και χρειάζονται άμεσα μέτρα για να σταματήσει αυτή η σφαγή.

Η μεγάλη κλίμακα και η μη επιλεκτική φύση της παράνομης παγίδευσης στην Κύπρο αποτελεί οικολογική καταστροφή. Ένα πρόσφατο «Ευρωπαϊκό Συνέδριο για την Παράνομη Θανάτωση των Πτηνών» που έγινε στην Λάρνακα (Κύπρος) τον Ιούλιο 2011 (http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/cultureheritage/nature/bern/News/Cyprus/Cyprus_en.asp) κατέληξε σε ένα ξεκάθαρο μήνυμα «μηδενικής ανοχής» και ο Πτηνολογικός Σύνδεσμος Κύπρου θέλει να δει τις δηλώσεις του συνεδρίου να γίνονται πράξη. Ως εκ τούτου οργανώνουμε αυτό το ψήφισμα διαμαρτυρίας για να πιέσουμε για περαιτέρω πολιτική βούληση για να σταματήσει η παράνομη παγίδευση πτηνών στην Κύπρο.

- Για τους ψηλούς μισθούς και συνταξιοδοτικά δικαιώματα του ευρύτερου δημόσιου τομέα (που για να συνεχίσουν να πληρώνονται πρέπει να φορολογηθεί ακόμη περισσότερο ο ιδιωτικός τομέας και ας είναι οι μισθοί και τα ωφελήματα του ιδιωτικού υπάλληλου σαφώς κατώτερα αυτών των δημόσιων υπαλλήλων)?

Με σοβαρό προβληματισμό για τα πιο πάνω.
Και με γνώμονα τα κοινά.
Και με στόχο να βοηθήσουμε να αλλάξουν νοοτροπίες.
Ζητούμε από τον κάθε πολίτη να υπογράψει το ψήφισμα που ακολουθεί. Εφόσον μαζευτούν πέραν των 4000 υπογραφών (πέραν του 0,5% του πληθυσμού μας ενώ η Ε.Ε. ζητά για αντίστοιχα ψηφίσματα 0,2%) θα παραδώσουμε το ψήφισμα στα κόμματα και στην κυβέρνηση για να το προσυπογράψουν, για να καταδείξουμε ότι εμείς η σιωπηλή πλειοψηφία δεν είμαστε τόσο παθητικοί πλέον και ότι αγανακτήσαμε και απαιτούμε να σταματήσει η διασπάθιση του δημοσίου χρήματος και ότι για αυτό υπάρχει σοβαρή λαϊκή υποστήριξη. Το ψήφισμα περιορίζεται μόνο στο πάγωμα των κυβερνητικών μισθών και στην ισονομία του συνταξιοδοτικού διότι ίσως να είναι τα πιο σημαντικά μακροοικονομικά θέματα που μπορούν να αντιμετωπιστούν πάραυτα με τον υπό εξέταση προϋπολογισμό και που θα έχουν τα πιο άμεσα αποτελέσματα.

Σίγουρα υπάρχουν και άλλα πολύ σοβαρά προβλήματα που μαστίζουν τον ευρύτερο δημόσιο τομέα όπως παραγωγικότητα, αξιοκρατία κτλ. Αυτά δεν περιλαμβάνονται στο ψήφισμα γιατί για να αντιμετωπιστούν πρέπει να γίνουν μελέτες που χρειάζονται χρόνο και άρα αναμένουμε την κυβέρνηση να τα επιληφθεί αφού πρώτα εφαρμόσει τα μέτρα του ψηφίσματος.

Εταιρειες στη Κυπρο λενε πως τα εξοδα εδω ειναι ακομα πιο χαμηλα απο τα 2.2 δις γυρω στο 1.6 - 1.7 δις ενω τα εξοδα επιδιορθωσης τελικα υπολογιζονται 1.5 με 2 δις καθως τα υπολοιπα ειναι χαμενες εργατοωρες

Η Ινδια δημιουργει τωρα φωτοβολταικο παρκο κοστους 2.2 δις και δυναμικης 700 Μεγαβατ. Συμφωνα με τους ειδικους μας οι επιδιορθωσεις του βασιλικου ανερχονται στα 3 δις ενω η δυναμικη ολόκληρου του σταθμου βασιλικου ειναι λιγότερη από 700 Μεγαβατ.

Συμφωνα με τη κοινη λογικη δεν νοειται να ξαναφτιαξουμε ενα σταθμο που ειναι πιο ακριβος, παραγει λιγοτερο και θελει πολυ συντηρηση, αφου ετσι κι αλλιως ειμαστε υποχρεοι στα επομενα χρονια σιγα σιγα να τον αντικαταστησουμε με ανανεωσιμες πηγες ενεργειας

Πιστευω οτι προχωρωντας με φωτοβολταικα ΤΩΡΑ! αφου ετσι κι αλλιως εχει ξεκινησει χωρις επιλογη τα τελευταια χρονια μια επιπονη προσπαθεια μετατροπης σε ανανεωσιμες απο ιδιωτες, αναιρουμε ολη τη ζημια που εχουμε υποστει στην οικονομια και επισης σταματαμε να εχουμε προστιμα ρυπων απο την ε.ε. Αντιθετα αν παμε σε επιδιορθωσεις θα συνεχισουμε να χουμε πιεσεις και προστιμα απο ε.ε. μεχρι να παμε σε 100% ανανεωσιμες και θα αναγκαστουμε να πληρωσουμε δυο φορες τη ζημια που εγινε, κανοντας κυκλους δηλαδη με θύμα πάντα τον πολίτη.

The Siberian Tiger is an Endangered Species inhabiting mainly the Sikhote Alin mountain region with a small subpopulation in southwest Primorye province in the Russian Far East where their dense and waterproof coats are built to withstand the cold temperatures. These beautiful creatures now reside in a crappy run-down zoo in Cyprus that should be shut down due to it's extremely poor living conditions, of not only exotic endangered tigers, but also of their Bird & Animal Park.

Some of the birds are kept in very small cages and aren't even allowed to fully stand upright due to the inadequate height of cage(s), with little to no shade from the scorching hot summer temperatures + poor water (small dirty dishes) and severe lack of care & compassion for these animals. This isn't a Zoo, but a prison for all it's residents. Please sign this petition in hopes of (at least) getting better accommodation for it's animal prisoners. These tigers need to roam and hunt and need a bigger living space or need to be moved to an appropriate Wildlife Sanctuary.. now!

They need a (safe, unpolluted) natural pond to bathe in, an air-conditioned room to keep cool, dens built as a refuge from the (temperatures can soar here during summer months - 37* C is probably a good day) heat.. and a better diet. They need wildlife experts & veterinarians called in regularly to oversee the situation and determine if the tigers are thriving. Throwing them some chicken and a few ice cubes in a pool is NOT SATISFACTORY! If the zoo can't afford to invest in the welfare of these tigers, and all of it's animals, it should release them immediately.

This is against the right to live and we demand that the parliament terminate this law since it is AGAINST THE RIGHT TO LIFE.

With Cyprus economy heavily depending on tourism and with Cyprus residents having very limited and expensive options to leave the island, we demand for Ryanair and the Cyprus government to negotiate an agreement and relaunch all of its cancelled flights.

We are a small family run business with big potential on the European island of Cyprus. We have always had a strong interest in 'real ales'. In 2010, after many years of research and promises of support by the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency, we took a huge step and moved to Cyprus from the UK.

We wanted to follow our dreams and bring a boost to all Cyprus residents and to Cyprus tourism by developing a new brewery to produce the highest quality, traditional, hand crafted 'real ales' to be served throughout the island. We will be only the third brewery on the island standing alongside or, as it now seems, up against the goliaths of Keo and Carlsberg. Ironically we don't see ourselves as a threat to these companies but more of a benefit as we expect they will see a net increase in sales as we actively work to generate more tourism to the island. We will just be taking a slice of the bigger pie that we will generate.

Our premises are in an old winery in the beautiful village of Tsada set picturesquely in the hills above Paphos and from here we are immediately ready to start brewing our 7 exclusive “Island Beers” range. We have been working tirelessly to make our dreams come true and to bring some long awaited variety, flavour, colour and character to all beer drinkers in Cyprus and to create some much needed employment, training and growth to the country in general and, in particular, to the suffering rural areas.

We did however underestimate just how difficult the Cyprus government would, for whatever reason (and many people have suggested reasons), make this for us and we admittedly underestimated the extent of the unnecessary obstacles that would be put in our way.

As all who know us are aware, we have for nearly 2 years been standing our ground and patiently rising up to every new challenge put in our way. Despite all the attempts we will fight these injustices. We will not allow ourselves to be driven away and we will brew in Cyprus but this determination has cost us dearly and is taking its financial and emotional toll on us all.

We just want to be given a chance without all the attempts to crush us before we even get out of the starting blocks.

We are asking members of the public, Cypriot residents, tourists and 'real ale' lovers of the world to join our fight and support us in our endeavour to bring Aphrodite’s Rock Brewing Company’s unique flavours to life and hopefully to Cyprus in the very near future so we will all be able to “Taste the Flavour”!

This petition has nothing to do with football, we don't support any team, all we ask for is for the people who tortured and killed the animal to be prosecuted for what they have done. We want Cyprus to respect that EU has laws for the animals also. As European citizens we demand Cypriot authorities to respect and follow the EU laws for animal abuse and protection.

We, the undersigned, call on the Cyprus Government to eliminate Animal Abuse and Cruelty. We also call on the Government to create laws to support Animal Rights in our Country. Animal Police is one of our major demands.
