Stop The Great Lakes Nuclear Dump

Ontario Power Generation (OPG), a multi-billion dollar power generation company, is seeking approval to build a nuclear waste dump (a Deep Geological Repository or DGR) 1 km from the shores of Lake Huron.

The Dump will extend underground to approximately 400 meters below the lake level. Some of this nuclear waste remains toxic and lethal for over 100,000 years.

On August 21, 2017, then Minister McKenna announced her decision would be delayed pending receipt of additional information from the Saugeen Ojibway Nation and OPG.

This dump puts at risk the fresh water of the GREAT LAKES, relied upon by 40 million people in two countries.

Any risk of buried nuclear waste entering the largest body of fresh water in the world is too great a risk to take, and need not be taken.

We can and must deliver an overwhelming wave of opposition to OPG's plan. Tell current Minister Wilkinson and the Canadian federal government to stand up for the protection of the Great Lakes.

Tell your friends on Facebook, Twitter and email.

Call for action against illegal bird trapping in Cyprus

TENS OF THOUSANDS of migrant birds are being illegally slaughtered in Cyprus annually to feed an appetite for illegal “ambelopoulia” delicacies. Trappers using limesticks and mist nets are making huge profits while threatening Europe’s natural heritage. You can help generate the political will to end this indiscriminate killing by signing BirdLife Cyprus’s petition to relevant Ministers.

Bird trapping in Cyprus has been taking place for many years. It began as a way of supplementing what was once a meager peasant diet. This is no longer the case. Trapping in Cyprus has become a large-scale, high-tech, lucrative business run by criminals. Trapped birds are usually supplied to restaurants that are illegally serving them - a dozen of trapped birds could be sold up to 80 euros. The competent authorities estimate this illegal business to be of the order of 15 million euros per year.

Bird trapping is illegal under Cyprus and European legislation. Trappers in Cyprus use mist nets and limesticks which are non selective methods of capture. 122 bird species have been recorded trapped on nets and limesticks, of which 58 bird species are listed as threatened by BirdLife International and/or the EU Birds Directive.

Moreover it is taking place on a large scale. BirdLife Cyprus (http://www.birdlifecyprus.org/) has been running a systematic monitoring programme on trapping in Cyprus since 2002 and estimates that hundreds of thousands of birds are killed every year. The last 4 years there has been a dramatic increase in trapping in Cyprus and urgent measures are needed to stop this slaughter.

The large scale and non selective nature of illegal trapping in Cyprus constitutes an ecological disaster. A recent film made by BirdLife Cyprus gives an overview of the trapping issue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Kk4B4YJWiQ) and one other film from another organization shows how far the trappers are willing to go to protect their illegal business (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KvpoLNEeDg).

A recent “European Conference on Illegal Killing of Birds” that took place in Larnaca (Cyprus) in July 2011 (http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/cultureheritage/nature/bern/News/Cyprus/Cyprus_en.asp) concluded on a clear “zero tolerance” message and BirdLife Cyprus wants to see words transformed into actions. For this reason we are undertaking this petition to put pressure for greater political will to stop illegal bird trapping in Cyprus.

No!

English

In the past, multinational companies have built and negotiated with the local government the construction of hotels in national parks. We cannot permit this to happen again, specially under the name of sustainability where the Koguis, from the Arawak indigenous family, are threatened. The sacred land that they have inhabited for centuries is now being exploited under the current government to build a mega 7 star luxury hotel with the company Six Senses. This must be stopped as the Park needs to be preserved. Although there are policies that don´t allow the construction of hotels in national parks, the current president of Colombia and its ministry of the environment have stated that they are going on with the plan. The government has sent mixed signals to the public, even arguing that indigenous communities do not exist in the park. The presidency has not cancelled the plan, regardless of evidence of corruption of the business partners from Colombia. This must be stopped. Please see link for more info.

Stop Logging Indonesian Rainforest and Endangered Orangutan Habitat

A proposal for further forest clearing and destruction of over 33,600 ha of rainforest has recently been put forward by a joint venture company, Asia Pulp & Paper/Sinar Mas Group.

The Bukit Tigapuluh (“Thirty Hills”) ecosystem is located in Central Sumatra, Indonesia. This globally important ecosystem provides a safe haven for many species which are threatened by extinction or are extremely rare - including the critically endangered Sumatran orang-utan, tiger and elephant.

Over 100 orangutans have been released to date via the Bukit Tigapuluh Sumatran Orangutan Reintroduction Project – the only reintroduction site for this critically endangered species. It took scientists decades to discover how to successfully reintroduce critically endangered orangutans from captivity into the wild and it could take APP just months to destroy an important part of their new habitat

Between 1985 and 2007, Sumatra island lost 12 million hectares of natural forest, a 48 percent loss in 22 years. By 2007, the island had only 30 percent natural forest cover (around 13 million hectares).

The Indonesian Ministries of Forestry, Environment, Public Works and Interior, as well as the governors of all 10 Sumatran provinces, including Jambi, last year announced their collective commitment to protecting the areas of the island with “high conservation values.”

The natural forest slated for destruction by APP – Bukit Tigapuluh – is a prime example of the high conservation value areas that the governors promised to protect. If the APP proposal for pulp paper production is accepted is will destroy the forest home of many species, and clearing on the ground could start as soon as 2010

Many environmental NGOs and Government organisations work in the landscape (including WARSI, the Sumatran Tiger Conservation and Protection Foundation, Frankfurt Zoological Society, Zoological Society of London, WWF and the Australian Orangutan Project).

Several Australian Government and NGOs also financially support the landscape including the Australian Orangutan Project, Human Society International (Australia), Perth Zoo, Auckland Zoo, Adelaide Zoo, Australia Zoo, and Dream World. Hundreds of individual Australians also provide financial support for the Park’s protection through the Australian Orangutan Project’s Safe Guard Program.

Ban Hydraulic Fracturing for natural gas in Ireland

We are calling on the Irish Government to immediately ban the process known as Hydraulic Fracturing (fracking) in Ireland.

Hydraulic fracturing is the method used for the extraction of natural gas (shale gas) from the ground.

This horizontal drilling process involves the pumping of millions of gallons of water, mixed with hundreds of highly toxic chemicals, thousands of feet deep into the ground.

Already in the U.S.A and Australia, pollution caused by this process to land, to air, to surface water and to groundwater has resulted in a terrible health toll and catastrophic environmental damage. Countless cases of death have been reported among wildlife and livestock.

A litany of serious ‘fracking’ related health problems for people in communities in areas where this technology has been used have also come to light.

Because of this damning body of evidence, which includes academic reports (1), moratoria on ‘fracking’ have been put in place in the state of New York, in the state of New Jersey, in the North Rhine Westphalia (Germany), in South Africa. The French Government has recently banned hydraulic fracturing in France.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has only recently begun an investigation into the safety of the process. Their final report is not expected until 2014. At present in Ireland there is no regulation in existence that covers this extraction method, and there has been no research published into the potential consequences of such activity here.

Presently, a number of oil and gas companies who have already been granted exploratory licences, are preparing to use this process to profit from shale gas in the Lough Allen and Clare Basin Regions – an area which includes twelve counties (2).

If hydraulic fracturing is allowed the aftermath may be an irreversible disaster for us and our environment. It may result in the contamination of our water table and of Ireland’s most extensive and important river and lake network.

We will not allow the safety of our water and the health of our children to be put at risk.

Fracking (Hydraulic Fracturing of rock) is a method used to extract natural gas from the ground. The process involves pumping millions of gallons of water, mixed with toxic chemicals, thousands of feet deep into the ground.

It has been used in the USA and Australia and has caused widespread environmental damage, water pollution, including death to livestock and wildlife.
Serious health issues for people living in the area are also reported. Because of this damming body of evidence, which includes academic reports, moratoria on fracking have been put in place in the state of New York, New Jersey(USA), the North Rhine (Germany), South Africa and France.

A large area of N. Ireland will be affected by this and licenses have been issued for Central Larne-Lough Neagh Basin, Lough Allen Basin, Rathlin Basin and Rathlin Island. See link. http://www.detini.gov.uk/deti-energy-index/minerals-and-petroleum/petroleum_licensing_2.htm

The people of Northen Ireland need a full review of this decision and a ban on this process. This process could severely impact our tourism industry, agriculture, our water quality, environment and our health.

STOP THE CUTTING/UPROOTING OF TREES AT SM BAGUIO

The SM Development Corp (SMDC) is set to cut 43 fully grown Alnus japonica trees while also intending to uproot 97 growing pine trees (Pinus kesiya) and 42 saplings virtually sentencing to death a total of 182 trees within the Luneta Hill area where SMDC is found to pave way for another parking lot.

This is is totally unacceptable, and callously insensitive to the importance of trees to the environment and ecology. We protest vehemently this intended act.

It appears that on Oct. 27, 2011, the Department of Environment and Natural resources (DENR granted a cutting, balling and pruning permit to SMDC upon the instruction of a clearance signed by DENR Sec. Ramon Paje on Oct., 2011.

This shows that DENR does not fully appreciate and understand the contributions of these trees which have already grown up in view of the global warming and environmental threats.

By issuing a tree cutting permit, DENR allows itself to be questioned publicly of its worthiness as well as its role as defender of the environment and natural resources. By ruling in favor of tree cutting by a business entity, it is fast losing public support to an already tarnished image.

DENR also shows preferential treatment for business establishments against original inhabitants, locals and residents who have long cared for the environment. Economy at the expense of the environment is greed.

We finds this utterly senseless and call on the immediate stoppage for these trees from being harmed or killed. Please sign now! Let us all work to stop such stupid acts where our environment is sacrificed for financial gain by a few profiteers. Let us stop these tree cutters. Let us save what is left of our beloved Baguio. If our political leaders and agency public servants do not do what is mandated of them, let us show what a citizens' initiative can do. We can do this.

Palm oil is used in everything from our breakfast cereals and chocolates to our cosmetics and soon to come, in the gas we use to drive our cars!

Palm oil is also the biggest cause of global warming as forests are cut down to plant more plantations and more than 5 million acres of forests are under the chain saw in South America, Africa and Asia.
