Stop the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive

The Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive (THMPD) is presented as a service to European citizens and as simple to apply. However, close examination of its methods in practice demonstrates that the reality will be an egregious abridgement of the rights of individuals to obtain and use the health treatments they choose.

While it benefits citizens for governmental agencies to advise on efficacy and safety of products that have been commonly and freely used by utilising a particular method of inquiry, that information may not address the needs of individuals and presumes that there is only one system for obtaining accurate and beneficial information. That is equivalent to allowing only one religion as the accepted source of truth.

The costs and systems required by THMPD are generally not manageable by small manufacturers, which are the predominant suppliers of herbal products. This results in an unfair competitive advantage to multinational corporations, which ultimately limits the individual's access to quality and selection in herbal medicinal products.

With THMPD, the European Union has overstepped and is severely restricting the unwritten rights of each human being to choose and access methods of managing health. It is a dangerous usurpation of civil rights that assumes the individual does not have the ability to make proper health decisions. Self-determination in matters of health must be treated as an inherent civil right, and THMPD is an abrogation of it.

Read this to see the sort of madness that the EU Commission is already enacting--and that you may help stop by signing this petition.

Resignation of Silvana Koch-Mehrin from the European Parliament

English Text
We, the undersigned, call on the European Parliament to withdraw Ms Silvana Koch-Mehrin from the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. The University of Heidelberg has recently determined that Ms Koch-Mehrin plagiarized substantial portions of her 1998 dissertation Historische Währungsunion zwischen Wirtschaft und Politik. Die Lateinische Münzunion (“Historical Currency Union between Economy and Politics. The Latin Monetary Union”) from uncited or incorrectly cited publications of other authors. On June 15th, 2011, the University revoked her doctoral degree.

It is unacceptable that a politician who has been found guilty of academic fraud be allowed to serve on a committee charged with overseeing European research policies and research funding.

We also call on Ms Koch-Mehrin’s party, the German Freie Demokratische Partei, as well as on the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in the European Parliament, to undertake everything in their power to convince Ms Koch-Mehrin to resign from the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and from her mandate in the European Parliament.

Finally, we call on Ms Koch-Mehrin herself to take responsibility for the academic fraud she has committed and to resign from the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and from her mandate in the European Parliament voluntarily in order to avert further damage to the prestige of these institutions, to the scientific community, and to the country that she represents in the European Parliament.

Deutsch

China says ready to help solve EU crisis - NO thanks!

BEIJING - 14 February 2012 - EU meeting with China in Beijing.

China's Premier Wen Jiabao said China wanted to see Europe -- its biggest trading partner -- "maintain stability and prosperity", a day after ratings agency Moody's downgraded Italy, Spain and Portugal.

The two sides also agreed during the talks to give fresh impetus to Beijing's efforts to attain full market economy status (MES) for China in the European Union, according to a joint communique issued after the summit.

"China is ready to increase its participation in resolving the EU debt problems," the Chinese premier told journalists after meeting EU president Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso.

China was considering using Europe's bail-out funds to help address the continent's fiscal woes, Wen added, without elaborating further on how the Asian power might be prepared to contribute.

"China will continue to fully meet its World Trade Organization commitments," he said. "It will continue to expand market access."

Read more: EUbusiness http://www.eubusiness.com/news-eu/china-finance-debt.f6g/

//In this case we have the spotlight on China as it concerns a political position. The petition says that we European citizens do not want to increase our trade with China. We want instead to an end. We want to INCREASE the embargo against China.

This is to force China to adjust its animal welfare. This is only possible through the economic force of China, to institute laws prohibiting Chinese to torment, torturing and skinning animals alive. Some Chinese people seem completely brainwashed to carry out these atrocities.

We know there are good people in China who are fighting for the animals and there are those we sustain through this petition. For animal friends there are no borders.//

European Gender Summit - Policy Manifesto

This Manifesto represents views of individuals working in the European science system on the actions needed to enhance research and innovation by addressing gender equality issues.

Each action distils the collective responses to questions asked in the online public consultation conducted by genSET in conjunction with the 1st European Gender Summit. As such, it complements the consensus recommendations of: a) the genSET Science Leaders Panel1, b) the DG Research, Innovation and Science Expert Group on Structural Change in Research Institutions2, and c) the Gendered Innovations project3.

The Manifesto elaborates the question included in the earlier EC public consultation on the Green Paper - “What actions should be taken at EU level to further strengthen the role of women in science and innovation?” - in order to focus attention on twenty-five years of research demonstrating how gender impacts the quality of research and innovation.

Over 300 individuals participated in the online consultation. These contributions were presented and discussed at the First European Gender Summit in Brussels, attended by over 400 stakeholders.

This Manifesto is a work in progress to be advanced through evidence based actions and cooperation between scientists, policy makers and gender research scholars.

I'm an animal loving tourist - I think?

Did you know that before and after the European tourist season, governments clean the streets from cats and dogs in, for example: Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey?

Many animals are poisoned and die a very painful death, others are beaten to death, or hanged and strangled. Many are hit by cars and left to die.

Some end up in horrible captivity where life is frightening and tormenting, and many die of disease or starvation. Enclosures in these countries are hot in summer and cold in winter. The animals die from heat stroke or freeze to death. The country and the business sector does not want that these animals disturb the good impression of their country and affect tourism negatively.

None of these countries have made efforts to curb the stray animal population by neutering campaigns, or information about neutering to the public. Instead, these countries chose to poison or otherwise get rid of their abandoned, unwanted companion animals. Never or rarely do they punish someone for abuse or murder of animals. These countries are making a strict difference between an animal with an owner and an abandoned animal. In these countries, an abandoned animal can be treated as badly as you like and in many eyes they are seen as unwanted debris that disrupts the community.

Some of these countries still enjoy the torture of bulls during bullfights and have a variety of traditions in which animals are involved and tormented. In all these countries, dogs are used for hunting. These dogs are treated very badly and starvation to death is common between the hunting seasons. They are often killed or abandoned after a bad game.

DANSK VERSION KLIK PÅ DETTE LINK: EU-forsøgudensamtykke

DEFEND YOUR RIGT TO DECIDE OVER YOUR BODY AND LIFE WHEN HOSPITALIZED!

(new information is added to the text) A new bill** in the EU will abolish the directive* that protects the patient´s right to prior and free consent to trials with new medicine in emergency situations. Instead `subsequent consent´is proposed, meaning: The doctor can use emergency patients for a medicinal trial. And only a f t e r a patient regains consciousness will he be asked for consent to the trial. This is absurd and a violation of civil rights!

The bill is now being negotiated in the European Parliament. Due to the powerful lobbying of the pharmaceutical industry it will most likely be adopted in the first half of 2014 unless the citizens of Europe voice their protest!

Physicians are obliged to respect a patient's decision not to participate in trials. Each member State in the EU should therefore set up an electronic register, where citizens in advance can give their yes or no to participating in trials in cases of emergency.

This will enable doctors at the hospitals to check a patient's decision on the screen within a few minutes, and the citizen’s personal rights will be safeguarded.

Stop Commercial Diver Deaths

There are laws governing the safety of divers that work in the North Sea, that have prevented accidents and deaths occurring at the rate that was prevalent in the 1970's.

These laws have yet to be reflected in the inshore and coastal areas of the EU.

The following have happened this year:

25th January, Belgium, Olivier Rouxhet, Civil protection fire fighter diver, drowned when trapped on a sluice gate in the river Meuse during a search for two missing children.

23rd March, Spain, Javier Diaz-Macias was working (upstream) on a dam, his body was recovered downstream, it looks like he went through the spillway.

28th March, Spain, Hector Luelmo-Mayo, A soldier with the 5th intervention Battalion based in El Ferral de Bernesga, one of a 4 man diving team, separated from his group, body recovered the day after.

27th April, Italy, Ottavio Baumgartner, Cleaning water intake grill at a the Edipower plant in Sermide in Northern Italy, found stuck on the grill with his mask off, failed to respond to treatment.

4th June, Spain, Julio Dacosta-Gallo, Cleaning the propeller of a tug when 'somebody' started her up, his colleague (Andres) on the other side of the prop was injured but blown clear, Gallo got sucked through the blades and cut to pieces.

7th June, Portugal, David Mato-Garrido, Fish Farm or Fish Processing Plant, Sucked up a water inlet pipe and drowned in the hour it took to get a recovery diver to him.

9th July, Spain, Daniel Heres Álvarez, diver died gathering gelidium ( a kind of kelp used to extract several foods, pharmaceutical and cosmetics components mainly agar-agar ), in north of Spain due to unsafe procedures.

It is time the regulations took into account the safety and training of commercial divers on inland and coastal waters!
