Keep the Canadian Census Long Form; Gardons le formulaire long du recensement canadien

The Harper government is moving to eliminate the Canada census long form questionnaire and replace it with a voluntary survey. The long form was sent to 20% of households and is a critical source of information about diversity, employment, income, education and other characteristics of Canadians. It is essential to business, research, planning and good public policies and programs. Stakeholders ranging from the business community, to university researchers to social justice advocates are raising their voices to oppose this move.

Le gouvernement Harper entend supprimer le questionnaire long du prochain recensement et le remplacer par une enquête à participation volontaire. Le questionnaire long est une source d’information inestimable pour les affaires, la recherche et l’évaluation des programmes et des politiques.

Repeal and replace the Dangerous Dogs Act with better legislation

The Dangerous Dogs Act Study Group (DDASG) is a wide-ranging group representing animal welfare, local authorities and veterinary professional organisations which includes representation from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Blue Cross, British Veterinary Association, Dogs Trust, the Kennel Club, The Mayhew Animal Home, Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, Wandsworth Borough Council and Wood Green Animal Shelters.

We consider that the Dangerous Dogs Act needs to be overhauled to better protect the public and that a new dog control regime that emphasises responsible dog ownership should be introduced.

The Lord Redesdale has tabled a Private Members Bill in Westminster which provides for the following

•	Repeal of the Dogs Act 1871, the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and the Dangerous Dogs (Amendment) Act 1997 including breed specific legislation

The police expend significant resources on enforcement of the Dangerous Dogs Act in the UK, with large amounts of money being spent on the seizure and kennelling of dogs simply because of their breed type - many of these dogs are returned to their owners once proved to be of good temperament. Removing breed specific legislation would allow resources to be used more effectively elsewhere, and preferably concentrated on those dogs showing unprovoked aggression.

•	Introduce Dog Control Notices

The vast majority of dog attacks are a result of the irresponsible actions of dog owners, who have either not taken the time and trouble to train their dog correctly, or have indeed trained them to behave aggressively. Dog Control Notices will apply to all types of dog that have acted dangerously without provocation, caused an injury to another animal, caused harm, or caused a person to reasonably believe it will cause harm and aims to prevent serious incidents of aggression occurring by allowing preventative action.

•	Apply to both public AND private places

A large proportion of dog attacks occur in the home and involve a dog that is known to the victim. The Dog Control Bill will make attacks on private property a criminal offence. Greater responsibility is therefore placed on owners to ensure that their dogs are not out of control in any place.

Cape Hatteras Access Preservation Alliance

Welcome to the Cape Hatteras Access Preservation Alliance or CHAPA. CHAPA was formed by the Outer Banks Preservation Association, along with the Cape Hatteras Angler's Club and the North Carolina Beach Buggy as Charter members.

CHAPA was formed in the hopes that the access privileges of all the different user groups for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands could be represented and not just the needs of the fisherman.

CHAPA believes in "Free and Open Access" for all users and is working diligently to unite fisherman, surfers, kite boarders, wind surfers, shell seekers and all other forms of beach goers, so to protect their access on Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.

-------------------------------------

Update:

On April 30, 2008 4th Circuit District Court Judge Terrance Boyle accepted a consent decree and the voluntary dismissal of a law suite and request for temporary injunction filed by SELC, on behalf of Defenders of Wildlife and National Audubon Society on October 17, 2007 and February 20, 2008, respectively.

The newly approved consent decree will guide the resource management of Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area (hereafter referred to as CHNSRA) for the next three years. As demonstrated below the consent decree:

1. does NOT qualify as a special regulation for ORV use, thus, does NOT remedy the violation of Executive Order 11644, as amended by Executive Order 11989,

2. violates a variety of Congressional Acts (including but not limited to NEPA, Federal Administration Act, Federal Advisory Committee Act), and

3. represents a unconstitutional delegation of Federal Authority.

Furthermore, Judge Boyle’s numerous detailed discussions of appropriate ORV controls will likely influence the final special published by the Park Service. Based upon the above, the only remedy that will ensure that CHNSRA is managed as intended by Congress and the Constitution is for Congress to enact legislation authorizing ORV use as has been practiced over the past several years and in compliance with the 2007 Interim Protected Species Plan (hereafter referred to as Interim Plan) until such time as a final special regulation governing ORV use is finalized.

Selling our land is not in our national interest

We have a “For Sale” Sign on our wealth creating assets (our non renewable energy resources, our farms and our businesses). This means Australia does not get the benefit of these assets as our tax laws favour foreign companies and countries. Our high interest rates are locking Australians out.

We keep no register of the sale of our land or businesses. The FIRB thresholds for land or businesses are $244M for all countries except the USA which is $1001M before Governments count the cost, whereas some of our governments do count if foreign interests buy an apartment in a city. Put simply these high FIRB AUD$ thresholds do not meet the national interest test.

The excuse is we cannot do this because of Free Trade Agreements. FTAs cover the sale of goods and services not the sale of land and businesses.

We are concerned about the sale of our land to foreign countries and companies, especially those countries which do not reciprocate the opportunity. China, the Arab States, India and USA are buying our land for their use. They are also allowed to buy businesses beyond the farm gate which means our farmers are price takers not price makers, and we do not get the full benefit of our exports.

The countries buying our land have long recognised the importance of food security, yet for successive decades our policy decisions have forced our farmers off their land. This is an issue of national importance.

New Zealand recently applied the national interest test to stop the sale of eight dairy farms to the Chinese as the assets would no longer be used in the interests of New Zealand citizens.

We are not saying no to foreign investment, but we do want Australia to have controlling interest in assets which are necessary to Australia's long term security and prosperity. We are concerned how we will pay off our debt if these assets are working for other countries and companies not to the benefit of Australia.

Calling for a fair and honest review of the Swimming Pool Regulations for apartment complexes and resorts

The current regulations governing swimming pools in Cyprus are outdated and in serious need of reform. We call on the Minister of Interior Mr Konstantinos Ioannou to initiate a fair and reasonable review of the regulations and suspend any ongoing legal action against communal pools for not having a public swimming pool licence until the end of this review.

If you agree that the current swimming pool regulations which still require lifeguards on the smallest buildings communal pools (costing an estimated 18,000-30,000 per year) are disproportionate, please help by signing this petition.

For more information about this petition and the need for this pool regulation reform please click on the link above to go to www.CyprusCommunalGuide.com

Show the Movie "2016: Obama's America" and Save the Country

For the entire Presidential Candidacy of Barack Obama, the Mainstream Media has hidden the details of his background, his beliefs and his radical associations with America hating communist and even convicted terrorist. They know that any of his known associations and anti-colonialist convictions would instantly derail Obama's chance of re-election.

After seeing "2016: Obama's America" I decided something has to be done. I believe the more people that see this movie the more people that will have a true understanding of Obama's true motivation.

Ban Animal Cruelty not Live Export

Like the majority of Australians, we were sickened by the images of animal cruelty provided to “Four Corners” by ‘Animals Australia’. The images depicted inhumane slaughter practices in selected Indonesian abattoirs and as a result of this footage the Federal Government made a hasty and emotion driven decision to immediately cease all live export trade to Indonesia.

This decision has demonstrated a lack of knowledge of the logistics of the cattle industry, and the wide-ranging impact that this industry has on the whole of Australia.

We ask that the same levels of emotion that have been demonstrated for animals are applied when considering the lives of the many men, women and children that will be affected through the loss of a means of income with the closure of this market. There has already been a decrease in domestic cattle prices since the implementation of this ban, reducing the already tight profit margins of graziers who in recent years have had to survive floods and drought. Reduction in graziers’ profits will impact on the small towns where they shop, which in turn will impact on the regional cities that supply the small towns, and so forth. Crippling this industry will affect all Australians, many of whom are already struggling.

We urge the Federal Government to lift the ban on the live export of cattle to Indonesia before further damage is inflicted on the Australian economy, and allow trade to recommence to the Indonesian abattoirs that comply with Australian and international welfare standards.

Save Malta from illegal immigration

For the past five years, Malta has been faced with an onslaught of illegal immigrants from the African continent. Malta is one of the most overpopulated countries in the world, a situation which is already problematic to the Maltese. Apart from land, the island lacks also any natural resources. Suffice to say that it has to obtain water from the sea, at a high energy cost.

Furthermore, this never ending high influx of immigrants will inevitable destabilise the island, as from international experience and events, we believe that most unrest in the world is caused by conflicts between different cultures, ethnicities and religions, within the same country.

We cherish our social harmony, so necessary for the tourism industry, our lifeline. Malta is too small to absorb this. The Maltese people have the right to their identity and living space, and to defend against being overwhelmed.
