SAFE SPACE CAMPAIGN

We, the undersigned, call on the councils of the UK to work in partnership with RDuk Safe Space representatives to provide:

1) better gates and fencing to make green spaces, safe spaces for children and dogs throughout their borough

2) provide clear public information about Yellow Dog Campaign, safety around dogs and the need to STAY AWAY from Yellow Dogs..

3) safe, secure areas for solo use, for the training and play for Yellow dogs, and other indoor/outdoor facilities for the education of general community and dog owners regarding safety around dogs, dog training and rehabilitation. .

********************************************************************************************************

Research in a UK town showed that approximately 4 in 10 households have children, and approximately 3 in 10 households have a dog. There were 62 designated public play areas for children and 1 public play area for dogs. Just 1. And NOTHING for a 'Yellow Dog’ - one that needs space away from other dogs, people or other things because of fear, health, age or training issues - and there are 10,000's of dogs like that throughout the country.

Almost all public open spaces where children and dogs currently play, have insufficient fencing or gates meaning children and dogs can easily run into roads, or dogs can accidentally get to livestock in off-lead walking areas. Albeit the worst case scenario, but this can and does result in pets and children injured or killed.

We want the councils to work with the Safe Space representatives to provide secure, safe play areas for all these children and dogs, throughout their borough.

There are many dogs that are walked only on lead. Some because they are in training, or don't always come back when called, and some because they are recovering from an operation, or are sick or in season. But there are also many dogs – thousands of them, on lead because they are AFRAID of other certain things – be it a dog, a person, a scooter or plastic bags for example – and if that thing gets too close to the dog, the dog may cower or lunge and bark. All these dogs are classed as 'Yellow Dogs’ - they need their space (see Yellow Dog Campaign UK)

1) The general public need to know to STAY AWAY and give space to 'YELLOW DOGS' and dogs on lead, and ask before approaching any unknown dog.

2) Owner of these dogs need support and education on how to help their dogs cope better with these challenges.

We want the council to work in partnership with the Safe Space representatives to promote the Yellow Dog Campaign throughout the borough, provide education to the public, provide support and training to owners and provide totally secure, private rehabilitation and play areas for dogs that need space.

We want the council to work with RDuk to build a dog-bespoke indoor and outdoor training area for the rehabilitation and training of dogs. We also wish the council to work with RDuk to provide educational seminars for everyone who comes into contact with dogs - resulting in safe families, educated and responsible dog owners and general public, and everyone working together to make their communities a safe space for everyone, with no-one left out.

Dog Trainers and Behaviourists agree that
100% of their clients have needed education and training
100% have needed yellow ribbons for their dogs at some point in their lives
100% have needed a safely secured, open space to run and play in the company of educated public
and that thousands of dogs need a safe space – a bookable, totally secure field for rehabilitation, training and play.

The latter is needed as a matter of urgency as the councils currently provide NO green spaces fit for purpose for the public who care for these dogs. Not one in the entire of the UK. (Accurate as far as we know – and over 24,500 of us have looked!)

Save Creve Coeur Park

Pacific Heights Realty wants to rezone more than 200 acres of land beside Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park for industrial use, big box retail, flex industrial space, office space, and possible residential space.

We OPPOSE this development as it will disrupt our peaceful Creve Coeur Park - the place where we picnic and play with our children. This is NOT the place for urban sprawl.

Oakham Town Council has banned the Boxing Day hunt this year in Cutts Close. An event that hundreds attend and take part in, an event that brings our community together and helps us celebrate the festive period.

This is a tradition that Oakham has taken part in for over a 100 years.

Save the Southside Parade

The Chicago Southside Irish Parade was established in 1979, by two families, the Hendry and Coakley families, with a vision. They envisioned their community coming together to celebrate their Irish hertiage, values and traditions. Who would have thought it would have evolved into what it is today?

Could they have foreseen that over 300,000 people would join in the celebration of our heritage? That this day would become one of the most looked forward to days of the year? That attending the parade would become a tradition passed down through generations, that spans over three decades?

We need to preserve the Southside Irish Parade!

Save Kong's Market!

Issue: Proprietors of Kong's Market, 400 26th Ave., Santa Cruz Facing Immediate Eviction.

Overview: Everybody has their neighborhood corner market, and ours here in Pleasure Point is Kong's on 26th Avenue. The current proprietors, Sang and his wife, have been here for the past 24 of the 62 years it has been in business. Sang's family has become part of our neighborhood family. We've grown up together, watched each other's kids grow up, attended weddings, graduations, recitals, and even been there through periods of loss. It's not just a business, it's a family.

Services: Kong's Market has been a family-run, neighborhood grocery store on 26th Ave., Santa Cruz since 1954. Kong's is legendary amongst surfers, residents, and tourists alike for the eggrolls which are handmade on the premises daily. Kong's is truly part of the local community, stocking local and organic products, reasonably priced staples, and special ordered items at customer request. Most recently, the proprietors added a hot grill, serving fresh and organic burgers, breakfast burritos, and other hot foods.

Sang of Kong's Market is facing immediate eviction by the landlord, leaving the future of this icon and vital neighborhood service uncertain.

Relevance to Community: Kong's is closely integrated with the neighborhood community, open convenient hours, and in easy walking distance for neighborhood residents. The proprietors have proven themselves to be part of the community. Residents still speak of the time, after the Loma Prieta earthquake, when the neighborhood was without power or water for days. Kong's opened its doors and allowed residents to take supplies on the honor system. Sang and his wife are always quick to make contributions to neighborhood celebrations.

In these times of rapid development locally owned businesses are being squeezed out of the community. It is time to stand up for your neighborhood and protect this local treasure and neighborhood landmark which has been serving our neighborhood community for 62 years.

River Aire Railings Campaign

After another sad loss of a life in the freezing waters of the River Aire it's time we called for our local council to erect safety railings along the banks of the River Aire.

While our thoughts are with the family and friends of Matthew Wilcox - is this not the time to call for greater measures to be taken to protect the pedestrians who use the walk way as a route home. Young or old, sober or not open water and dark walkways are a danger to all of us.

Please join this group and help us petition Leeds City council before another family has to cope with the tragic loss of a life.

Save the Unthank Centre

Norfolk County Council plans to close the Unthank Centre in Norwich and replace the Family Centre Team with six workers across the county. This will be a reduction of about half of the practitioners with no dedicated space for the work to happen. The impact of this plan will be that children and families will not benefit from the multi disciplinary approach available to them now, nor the security offered by a centre specifically resourced for this purpose.

The Unthank Centre works with children under 12 and their families who live in Norfolk. The children will have experienced very difficult life experiences, including abuse, neglect and trauma. The families are always struggling with complex difficulties and are looking after their children in difficult circumstances.

The Family Centre has a multi disciplinary team including early years workers, social workers and therapists. They help the families stay together to heal and overcome trauma and to develop secure relationships together.

There will be a meeting of the County Council on February 14th 2011 when this petition will be presented.

She ultimately lost this battle but her memory lives on. Her will to live and refusal to ever give up is a testimony to others who find themselves going through hard times.

Saylor Voris is just the type of person who should be memorialized forever in our wonderful seaside town.

STOP HERITAGE BRIDGE

The city is proposing to build a four-lane bridge extending Heritage Avenue over our beautiful Parr Park’s walking and bike trails, nature preserve, and Big Bear Creek, destroying hundreds of mature trees and wildlife habitat in one of the only remaining city parks in southern Grapevine. In addition to the destruction of the beautiful park and forest, Heritage Bridge will disrupt the peaceful walking and nature trails with unwanted noise, lights, trash, and traffic. Children living in the quiet communities along Heritage Avenue, who have for years been able to walk home down Heritage Avenue from the elementary school, will be endangered by a new high-traffic, four-lane road. We do not believe that the saved minutes in drive time is worth sacrificing these things that are irreplaceable to our families, not to mention the more than $10MM in tax payer monies that this project is expected to cost. Please save our community and stop Heritage Bridge.
