Stop HS2 (High Speed Rail)

On 11th March 2010, the outgoing Labour Government announced plans for a High Speed Rail (HS2) link from London Euston to Birmingham. It was reported then that it would cost £11bn, but that figure was 6 years out of date. On the same day you could have got information from the Department for Transport which put the cost at £17.4bn or from HS2 Ltd, which put it at £25.5bn, or 2.8% of our generational national debt (based on a total national debt estimate of £916.6bn).

Despite all the cuts we will face as a nation, and the fact the new Prime Minister has stated that "things are worse than we thought", the Coalition Government still want to go ahead with HS2 and even extend it to link with Heathrow and HS1, meaning it will cost even more than the current £160 million per mile.

The business case assumes three times the number of passengers carried by the West Coast Mainline (45,000 increasing to 146,000 per day), despite there has been no increase in long-distance train travel since 1995 and the only increase has been on discounted fares.

This also ignores the fact that in 15 years time when it is scheduled to be ready, people will need to travel for work less, as who knows what we will have in terms of internet connections and video conferencing.

When announcing the sale of HS1 in Kent, Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond said; "High Speed One is a national success story." This is despite the fact half the trains have been cut to stem the losses. HS1, like HS2, was meant to be great for business and was going to carry 21 million people per year. It has managed 7.5 million. HS1 is being sold for £1.5bn, about a quarter of the £5.8bn it cost to build.

Just to make sure people will use it, as in Kent, current services will be cut. Commuters from Coventry currently enjoy three London trains per hour. If HS2 goes ahead, the two express trains will be cut, meaning even if people go up to Birmingham International to use HS2, it will take them longer to reach their destination.

Supporters and politicians are quick to say HS2 will be good for the environment, however when you read the actual plans, you find out this is not the case. HS1 passengers are responsible for 35% more CO2 emissions than car passengers, but HS2 will go faster, so the CO2 emissions will be higher, but we don't know how much higher as there is no passenger train in the world that travels at the proposed 250mph to compare it with. It will also lead to more flights, not less, as Birmingham International Airport is being extended and it will be about 40 minutes on the train from Euston and now will be directly linked to Heathrow. Birmingham will provide Heathrows third runway.

The HS2 report admits that the plan may lead to an increase in CO2 emissions, but in those calculations they ignore the seven years of construction and roadworks that will mean and the fact that in some places a 75 metre (83 yard) wide strip of 'green stuff' will be turned to concrete, due to 25 metre 'no vegetation zones' on either side.

Yes, 75 metres! The pitch at Wembley is only 69 metres wide. The plans state that where the trains will travel at top speed, the tracks will have to be 25 metres to stop passing trains blowing each other other the rails, and there will have to be a 25 metre 'No vegetation zone' on either side.

HS2 will cut right through the heart of the countryside at a noise level of 95 decibels. The noise level at which sustained exposure could cause permanent hearing damage is 90-95dB. It's not planned to go next to motorways (existing transport corridors) as that would cost even more and to travel at 'high speed', the line has to be very straight.

This will create massive social damage to towns and villages along the line. While the government say it is 'good for business', HS1 and the M6 Toll were justified for the same reasons, but have not devilvered the promised benefits. All they have delivered is large losses. The business case takes no account of businesses which will be destroyed, and businesses will only get land value when it comes to compensation.

HS2 will of course lead to the filling in of greenbelts, as once they are blighted by the fact upto 40 trains per hour (1 per 90 seconds), a quarter of a mile long, going past at 250mph, creating 95dB, it's not going to be a green belt any more. There is also the chance of extensive development around the Birmingham International station as a result of this plan.

The thing is with HS2 is it sounds like a good idea, but when you look at the details, you find that most parts of the plans are bad, unjustified ideas. The main thing is that it is going to be a collosal waste of money that will help bankrupt the country even more than it is now.

Just think of what would not need to be cut if it wasn't for committing to at least 25.5 billion pounds on one train line, connecting two cities, when there are already two train lines doing the job.

Ban BART Strikes

BART carries nearly 375,000 passengers on an average week day. The Bay Area Council Economic Institute estimates that one day of a BART strikes cost the Bay Area economy $73 million. It also hurts our environment, wasting 800,000 gallons of gas each day of a strike and putting 16 million lbs of carbon into the air.

New York, Chicago, Massachusetts, Washington, and San Francisco restrict transit strikes. Due to the crippling impact a BART strike would have on the Bay Area and California economy, it is imperative that the State Legislature provide a backstop to the regional BART Board through a ban on BART strikes.

Scrap the Greater Manchester Authorities Congestion Charge scheme

Greater Manchester Authorities are seeking to implement a congestion charging scheme against the wishes of the overwhelming majority of the people and businesses in the area. We believe that the proposed new tax is regressive, discriminatory and will severely harm the economy and competitiveness of the city.

The city's authorities are behaving in the most undemocratic way possible in their attempts to railroad this grossly unpopular scheme through.

The ongoing delays in proceeding with the Aberdeen AWPR have created a ridiculous situation which has gone on long enough.

Like many other small business owners and concerned citizens, I am angry and frustrated by the continual delays to this much needed major piece of infrastructure that will unlock significant road and transport improvements.

Dual the A11

Norfolk County Council is fully committed to achieving a start on dualling the final stretch of the A11 and is working with MPs, business leaders and Suffolk County Council to press the case for an early start on this long-awaited scheme.

We believe Norfolk can’t afford to wait any longer for this vital piece of infrastructure to be put in place and have successfully argued the case for the A11 Fiveways to Thetford to become a top priority at regional level.

Full dualling of the A11 is not only vital for the future prosperity of Norfolk, it will also bring urgently needed improvements in safety along what is a notorious bottleneck.

Businesses tell us the negative impression given by the single carriageway stretch of the road is the biggest issue affecting confidence in the local economy and a study has put the benefits of the scheme at more than £600m.

Recent discussions with MPs and the Secretary of State for Transport have raised hopes that there is a real opportunity to achieve a breakthrough and finally get the A11 out of the slow lane.

Norfolk County Council is joining forces with Suffolk County Council and business leaders to set up a petition which will be in Norfolk's libraries and offices of the Eastern Daily Press during September.

We then intend to deliver paper and online versions of the petition to the Secretary of State during Autumn in the hope of achieving a start on work by the end of 2010, if at all possible.

Please sign the petition and encourage others to do so and ensure the Secretary of State listens to people in Norfolk and Suffolk, and road users generally, and is left in no doubt about the very strong support for this vitally important scheme.

Say no to drop-off charges at Edinburgh Airport

This petition is calling on Edinburgh Airport to reject its decision to introduce a £1 drop-off charge.

Many of my constituents are deeply unhappy about BAA’s decision to charge drivers £1 to simply drop someone off at the airport. I believe that this charge is just plain mean. For a lot of people getting public transport to the airport is not a viable option. I have been contacted by elderly residents and constituents with young children who don’t have an alternative way of getting to the airport.

I am calling on BAA to reverse this decision as soon as possible.

I have also lodged a Parliamentary motion on the subject:

Date of Lodging: 2 July 2010

Short Title: Drop-off Rip Off at Edinburgh Airport

S3M-06704 Gavin Brown (Lothians) (Con): That the Parliament regrets the decision by BAA to introduce a £1 drop-off charge at Edinburgh Airport; considers that BAA failed to consult widely with passengers ahead of its decision; further considers that for a lot of people, including elderly residents and those with young families, taking public transport to the airport is not a viable option, and urges Edinburgh Airport to abandon the introduction of this ill-thought out charge.

Remove ALL Speed and Red-light Cameras from Australian Roads

Speed and red-light cameras do NOT save lives - speed and red-light cameras simply raise REVENUE!

For the statistical proof, please visit www.aussiespeedingfines.com/pages/Petition-To-Remove-Cameras.html

Every week there is a new story in the media of yet another innocent motorist being punished - despite doing NOTHING wrong - by yet another flawed or faulty camera.

There are constant reports of how much money these so-called "safety cameras" have collected for the various State governments yet the road toll is NOT going down!

The Police try and justify these blatant revenue raising devices by saying that they are making people slow down and they are therefore saving lives yet the facts show that this is NOT the case. Speed cameras are NOT a deterrent, they do NOT save lives and the general motoring public no longer believes in the speed camera program.

It is time to stand up and fight back and send a loud and clear message to the governments that WE voted in to look after us - that we do NOT want speed and red-light cameras operating on our roads any longer!

For full details about what will REALLY make a difference to our road toll, please go to www.aussiespeedingfines.com/pages/Vision-for-the-Future.html

And, for further information on what you can do to fight back against unjust and unlawful speeding fines and parking fines, please visit our Home page at www.aussiespeedingfines.com

Investing in Michigan's Transportation Infrastructure, Investing in Michigan's Future

Michigan's transportation infrastructure is crumbling due to the lack of proper funding. The system is primarily funded through state vehicle registration fees and fuel taxes. Michigan's current gas tax is 19 cents per gallon, and has not been raised since 1997. We have not kept up with comparable states: Wisconsin-32.1 cents/gal; Minnesota-27.1 cents/gal; Ohio-26 cents/gal; Pennsylvania-35.1 cents/gal.

The one choice we cannot afford is to do nothing.

Music Free Buses in London

Update: THIS PETITION HAS BEEN PRESENTED TO TRANSPORT FOR LONDON AND IS NOW CLOSED.

A NEW PETITION THAT COVERS BOTH BUSES AND TRAINS HAS BEEN LAUNCHED AND CAN BE FOUND AT:

http://www.gopetition.com/online/10428.html

==================================

This is a petition designed to combat the growing use of mobile phones and mp3 players to play music out loud by passengers on London Buses.

We contacted the company with regards to this issue and received this reponse:

"If the use of a mobile phone or personal stereo does cause annoyance to other passengers or is distracting the driver's attention, staff can request that the music is reduced. It is very difficult to enforce a complete ban on people listening to music on buses. However, we have recently made the decision to put posters up at bus stops, asking people to keep their music down."

We believe that London Buses need to do more than display posters at bus stops. Easily noticeable posters and warning signs on the buses themselves would be far more useful and would also help support those passengers who choose to confront those who show a lack of respect whilst using public transport.

We feel it is very important to show London Buses and TfL the exact scale of this issue. Please add your experiences, thoughts and suggestions in the comment field when signing the petiton so that we can pass them on.
It is also very useful if you include your usual bus route(s) as it provides an idea of just how widespread the problem is.
