Stop the Legalisation of Online Gambling in Singapore

UPDATE (6 Nov 2016):
1-Click Now – to show you are AGAINST “Putting an ONLINE BETTING OUTLET In Your Home”. You now only need to give your name and email address, and then click "Sign this petition". That's all!
---
[ENGLISH]
This petition is to call upon the Singapore Government to immediately and unequivocally reject Singapore Pools and Singapore Turf Club's appeal for exemption from the Remote Gambling Act. We, as fellow citizens of Singapore, are deeply concerned about the possible implications of allowing such exemptions due to the many and real problems caused by the easy availability of online betting.

Even setting limits on how much and how often one can bet is not enough, because the very nature of online betting can cause young people to become addicted to gambling - which can last for a lifetime and be just as addictive or even more than drugs.

According to today's Straits Times articles dated 15 Sep 2016:

1. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/legal-online-betting-may-be-available-soon
2. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/online-betting-fear-of-rise-in-addiction

Singapore Pools and the Singapore Turf Club (STC) "are preparing to launch their online betting services, in anticipation of getting the green light from the authorities." And more audaciously, they've even run "final tests on their online betting platforms and have prepared advisories for staff and customers."

Such actions are contrary to the intended objective of the Remote Gambling Act (as listed in Part 1, Section 7), which is to protect "young persons and other vulnerable persons from being harmed or exploited by remote gambling".

However, our own MPs have warned that allowing these lottery companies to be exempt from the Remote Gambling Act will "send mixed signals." Furthermore, social workers have seen the rise of additional problems that arise from problem gambling.

In fact, NCPG's own statistics for 2011-2014 have shown that problem gamblers are starting younger, no thanks to online gambling (http://news.asiaone.com/news/singapore/problem-gambling-rate-spore-falls-more-starting-young-survey) .

Already, the legalization of casinos in Singapore has led to families in Singapore getting hooked on gambling, and has led to a rise in crime and bankruptcies. Many of us personally know of families and loved ones who have fallen into the trap of gambling addiction, and the pain and anguish of trying to help them overcome, only to see them relapse and lie and even attempt suicide.

Families have been ruined, fathers and mothers have attempted suicide, careers and marriages destroyed... is it worth it to sacrifice the future of a nation and our next generation for short-term financial gains?

Even the exclusion orders that we can place has proven to be of limited use, as problem gambling is extremely addictive - even more than drugs. Scientific research (e.g. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-the-brain-gets-addicted-to-gambling/) has clearly shown that gambling is just as - if not more - addictive than drugs. If we are willing to institute the death penalty for drugs because of the social destruction that drugs cause, then why do we allow gambling to enter our nation too?

Thus, the best defense against gambling addiction is to prevent gambling addiction in the first place. Prevention is better than cure.

Therefore let us call upon the Government to set a clear sign that online gambling will continue to not be tolerated, especially in an age where the Internet makes it too easy for young people to get hooked.

[BAHASA MELAYU]

1. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/legal-online-betting-may-be-available-soon
2. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/online-betting-fear-of-rise-in-addiction

(http://news.asiaone.com/news/singapore/problem-gambling-rate-spore-falls-more -starting-young-survey).

1. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/legal-online-betting-may-be-available-soon 2. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/online-betting-fear-of-rise-in-addiction
（http://news.asiaone.com/news/singapore/problem-gambling-rate-spore-falls-more-starting-young-survey)
（http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-the-brain-gets-addicted-to-gambling/）

NO TO MOTORCYCLE ARF INCREMENT

Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat announced a new tiered tax system for motorcycles on 20 Feb 2017. Under the new system, the 15% Additional Registration Fee (ARF) will stay for motorcycles with an OMV of up to S$5000. The subsequent S$5000 of its OMV will incur an ARF of 50%, and the remaining OMV above S$10000 will come with an ARF of 100%.

What is the rational behind this move?
If Singapore's goal is to curb road congestion shouldn't we encourage mode of transport such as motorcycling by reducing the taxes?
Motorcycles do not contribute as much to congestion as cars so why are motorcyclist subjected to the same tax amount as cars?

The SLA recently posted notices banning the feeding of stray cats and dogs within the compounds of black and white houses at Changi Village, specifically, the row of black and white houses behind Block 5.

The strays have taken refuge within the compound over the years, and live happily with most of the neighbours.

We are petitioning the SLA to work with the community feeders to implement a scheme of responsible feeding instead of banning all feeding and banishing the stray cats outright (there are no stray dogs on the premises).

We cannot keep giving in to animal haters in Singapore.

We need to have a proper conversation about living in harmony with our community strays so as to reflect the highest aspirations of kindness towards animals in Singapore.

Granting Gurkhas and their family members PR status/Citizenship

Singapore has a small fraction of our society comprising of Gurkhas and their family members. When a Gurkha (from Nepal) is engaged to work in Singapore, his spouse and children (if any) will also travel alongside with them and stay in their quarters at Mount Vernon camp.

These children attend our local government schools and study/play/grow up with our Singaporean children. Their fathers (the Gurkhas) helped to guard important buildings, installations and ministerial residences. They are well-known to be loyal to the countries that they serve and will die for its cause.

However, no Gurkhas are given the chance to apply as Permanent Resident (PR) or to convert to Singapore Citizenship. When they have completed their 25 years of service, they will have to leave Singapore together with their families. Most of their children have spent more than half of their lives in Singapore and some their entire lives (born locally). We believe that Gurkhas and their families will be the most loyal and law-abiding citizens of this country if given the chance to stay after their retirement.

We shall not forget the contributions of the Gurkha Contingent during Singapore's early days of independence. Their forefathers have shed blood and tears for a country that they were not a part of. Their children will continue to do so to offer protection and security to Singapore.

Harsher Penalties for Animal Abuse and Abandonment/Neglect

The numbers of animal abuse, abandonment and neglect are increasing.

Pets are frequently bought without much thought into their welfare for the long run. These owners often abandon their pets when faced with unexpected difficulties (which are to be expected in any relationship).

This contributes to increasing numbers of strays who are vulnerable to abuse.

We also realise that the cases of abuse (especially for strays) are often neglected with little to no follow up simply because strays have little rights (without a human owner).

We propose that there should be harsher penalties for ALL cases of animal abuse, regardless of ownership, as well as harsher penalties for animal abandonment.
It is common knowledge that the way a society treats its animals reflect the way we treat each other.

Let us have more effective legislative structures in place to shape the way we care for one another to build a better society.

Legalize Airsoft Guns in Singapore

Airsoft is a widely recognized hobby and sport internationally.

Airsoft guns are currently banned in Singapore, due to an incident of a child shooting another in the eye. Such incidents are due to the lack of proper safety practices to ensure that the players are unharmed.

In foreign countries, like the United States of America, safety is practiced properly before any Airsoft shooting practice or skirmishes. Proper eye protection, such as goggles or masks are worn in order to prevent accidents.

There is also another heard of reason why Airsoft is banned in Singapore. It is due to the resemblance of an Airsoft gun to an actual firearm. Some countries only allow Airsoft guns with a bright orange tip to be allowed into the country, so as to differentiate it from an actual firearm.

If a country that allows both actual firearms and airsoft guns is holding up well, why can't a country which bans actual firearms and only allows airsoft guns with a bright orange tip to deter a robber from using an airsoft gun to rob. They would rather use alternatives which are not banned in Singapore. Painting over the orange tip of an airsoft gun would cause it to look shiny, bulgy and unrealistic, unless used with an extremely thin paint, which are very expensive. Most robbers would not risk doing that in order to rob, hence deterring the robber from committing that act. Even if they do paint one, they would carry the risk of actually being shot by with a real gun, which would in turn deter them from choosing to rob with an airsoft gun. In conclusion, having airsoft guns allowed into Singapore would not increase the amount of robberies committed here.

It has already been proven as a fact that Airsoft guns cannot be modified into an actual firearm that would kill. They are also typically harmless if used with proper protection. As quoted from Wikipedia, 'Airsoft pellets typically leave small wheals (welts) on human targets. While mildly painful, pellets are not especially damaging to the skin. Eye protection is universally required to prevent damage to eyes. It is also often recommended that full face masks be used during airsoft matches to protect the players' teeth and ears.'

There are also environmentally friendly biodegradable BB pellets which are sold at a cheap cost to prevent plastic BBs from destroying the environment.

Having airsoft facilities and also regular skirmishes in Singapore would teach the younger generation about urban and jungle warfare, depending on where they have their skirmishes. By doing so, they would have extra training outside and before their NS. Airsoft skirmishes would teach players about camouflage, stealth, cooperation and many other things that would strengthen our army.

I understand that there is a problem about the increase of Singaporeans who are migrating to other countries. Some of these are due to the many restrains of being a Singaporean. Having some less serious restrains taken away would allow them to feel that the government cares about the citizens and also allow them to reconsider migrating abroad.

Please do reconsider the banning of Airsoft guns in Singapore in order for the existence of an internationally popular sport and hobby in our country.

We demand justice for late Ms Elsie Lie Lek Chee

We demand justice.
My sister, the late Elsie Lie Lek Chee was a fun-loving person and a filial daughter to both my parents. Coming from a low-income family with my father as the sole-breadwinner, we had to scrimp and save to make ends meet. My younger brother was in Poly back then. As the first sibling to enter the workforce, my sister supplemented the family’s income with the little to the best of her ability, even with the little that she had. She was caring, kind, helpful and extremely good tempered.
Ever since the passing of my sister, my parents has been in extreme grief and had a hard time dealing with it for the past 5 years. Just 5 days ago we received the verdict: that her cold-blooded murderer, Gabriel Lee Haw Ling – her abuser, the one who left her no dignity even in DEATH, was guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to 10 years in jail.
10 years in jail. For culpable homicide…for what should have been murder. What he deserves should be at least 20 years if not life imprisonment. Now it’s become 10 years.
Defence lawyers Sunil Sudheesan and Diana Ngiam, however, urged the court to impose a jail term of nine to 10 years. “Our client comes from a strong Catholic background and has believed in ghosts, evil spirits and Lucifer since he was a child,”
How would a person with such extreme beliefs be safe with the public.? How many more lives would be lost to the hands of these cold-blooded murderers before the Judicial System could do something about this?
It is time to stop the exploitation of mental disorders so as to achieve lenient sentences. My sister died a horrific death and her murderer will be out of jail in less than 3 years. We demand fairness.
So I implore you, a member of the general public to stand with us and make a statement to deter any more of such acts of brutal killing. We want to rally against this passing of a lenient sentence to someone who has committed such a heinous crime. Singapore no longer feels safe to me. A murderer simply must not get away with culpable homicide. My sister died a wrongful death and in vain – and I will never ever want to see this happen to somebody else. Please sign and share this important petition to uphold justice and equality within our judicial system.

SBS/SMRT to allow open strollers in all buses

Many parents travel alone and have their hands full, they can't carry baby, carry bags, fold stroller and board the bus at the same time unless they have 6 hands? Strollers comes with safety harness and baby being in there is safer than being in the parent's arm in a moving bus.

Strollers, unlike market trolleys, have brakes and this helps a mother who is travelling alone to juggle all items and manoeuvre with ease.

The bus drivers don't even have to get out from his seat to assist like he would for a wheelchair passenger. All he has to do is allow the stroller to be up in the bus.

Like wheelchairs passengers ,there would be just one or 2 who would board the bus and if the bus is crowded, obviously the parent would wait for the next bus.

Government wants us to have more children but how to if it's an inconvenience to travel? Cars have high coe tags and cabs fee are high. Also it won't make sense to take a taxi if the distance is just 4 bus stops away.

Not all family have the luxury to take a taxi everywhere they go.Walking to the interchange which might be 4km away can be a torture especially in our hot tropical climate.

Do join hands to allow open strollers in the buses. I'm sure all parents would appreciate this.
