There is a process called forced breeding, where a female elephant is chained with her front legs together and her back legs wide apart so she has no means of escape. A group of bulls (male elephants) are released and commence to rape the female. This process occurs for months, even after she is impregnated, all the way up until she gives birth. It can be so physically straining that the female elephant might break her back, and so mentally traumatizing that, upon giving birth, she might kill her baby because she is so terrified for its future.

Baby elephants are tortured so that they will be broken and moldable by their owners. They are taken away from their mothers far too early so that they can learn to paint pictures (elephant painting is a famous attraction for tourists in Thailand). The mahouts (elephant riders) use sharp hooks on the end of sticks to hit the elephants very hard on the sensitive skin behind and inside their ears, their neck, and their eyes. They use slingshots to shoot unwilling elephants directly into the eyeballs, more often than not with the result of blinding them.

After this sort of treatment, a broken baby elephant no longer cries for its mother or nanny - it does not even recognize them. There is also a process called the Phajaan, which refers to the breaking of the elephants to do the mahouts’ bidding. One aspect of the Phajaan is the Crush. This is when a young elephant is chained into an extremely tight cage with his/her legs each to a post for days. It is constantly physically abused until its spirit is “crushed”, the will taken completely out of it, so that it can be under the mahouts’ control. Treatment as awful as this continues for the elephants’ entire life.

They grow up forced to do manual labour. In a process called elephant logging, elephants must drag extremely heavy logs through forests up mountains. Lek told the story of an old elephant who had a mahout on his back and a chain around his chest with a large log attached. Deep gouge marks in his chest marked where the chain was cutting into his flesh, and he was screaming in pain but mahout continued to yell at him and hit him with the hook. Forced to continue, the chain dug even deeper into the elephant’s widening cut. There is also something in Thailand called elephant begging.

Elephants are taken into large, scary, bustling cities and forced to beg for money from tourists. Many of them are hit by cars, and the city scene traumatizes them. They do not belong in cities. They do not belong at the disposal of humans.

Sharks are also hunted for sport and many are inadvertently caught in fishing nets or in nets placed to protect humans. Sharks have a great deal to fear from humans. Compared to the 10-15 people killed by sharks each year; over 100 million sharks perish at the hands of humans annually and many populations may face extinction. Sharks are killed for many reasons, including fear;
However; the product that drives the market are the fins. After drying, collagen fibers are extracted from them, cleaned, and processed to make 'shark fin soup'. In spite of the fact that these fibers have little flavor or nutritional value, the soup is considered a delicacy, and may sell in the Orient for more than $100 ( £65) a bowl.

Often the fins are sliced off when the shark is still alive and the mutilated shark is dumped back into the water to die a slow and agonizing death.

พวกเราดังมีรายนามข้างท้ายมีความเห็นต่อกรณีดังกล่าว ดังต่อไปนี้

1. เราเห็นว่าสิทธิเสรีภาพในการแสดงความคิดเห็นที่แตกต่างหลากหลาย ต้องได้รับการเคารพและปกป้อง

สังคมประชาธิปไตยทุกสังคม ที่ปรารถนาความสงบสุข สันติภาพ และความสมานฉันท์ จำเป็นต้อง ส่งเสริม และ ปกป้อง สิทธิเสรีภาพในการแสดงความคิดเห็นของประชาชนอย่างเต็มที่

เหตุเพราะความเคารพและความเข้าใจอันดีต่อกัน “เอาใจเขามาใส่ใจเรา” เป็นสิ่งที่สำคัญที่สุดเรื่องหนึ่งในการอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสันติในสังคมที่ผู้คนมีความแตกต่างหลากหลาย และหนทางเดียวที่จะนำเราไปสู่การเรียนรู้ที่จะเข้าใจและเคารพกันได้ คือสภาพสังคมที่เอื้อให้ทุก ๆ คน มีสิทธิเสรีภาพในแสดงออกด้วยความรับผิดชอบอย่างเต็มที่

Subject: A call for accountability from Thepthai Senpong and Thailand's Democrat Party, and a call for all netizens to safeguard our rights and freedom of expression on the Internet

Reference is made to the disclosure made by Thepthai Senpong, the Democrat Party’s Assistant Secretary-General, of 29 websites that are allegedly “dangerous websites” that have lèse majesté content. He demanded that government and the Minister of Information and Communication Technology take action against such websites. This story has been widely reported in the news media.

We, the undersigned, would like to express our stance on this issue as follows:

1. We believe that the right and freedom of expression, especially the expression of diverse viewpoints that differ from the establishment’s views, must be respected and protected.

Every democratic society that wishes to see peace and harmony must fully support and protect its people’s freedom of speech. Mutual respect and understanding is one of the most crucial ingredients of peace in a society in which members are different and diverse. The only way we can learn to move toward such goal of mutual respect and understanding is by fostering an environment in which everyone feels free to express his or her opinions fully and responsibly.

The door that leads us toward mutual respect and understanding will slam shut as soon as our mouths and hearts are silenced.

2. We disagree with using the monarchy as a tool to achieve political goals.

Most of the websites and blogs that Thepthai identified are not full of content or information that can be considered offensive to the monarchy. Many websites present information that are academic in nature, full of supporting data and rationale. Thepthai’s indiscriminating allegation that lumped all these websites into one category is therefore a gross error that resulted from the lack of thorough fact-checking, an easy way of putting pressure to silence differing opinions without regard to due process, a way of using the monarchy as a political tool to destroy political opponents, and instigate harmful discordance among Thai people. All of these points show an alarming lack of the democratic spirit.

But with Phuket's current plastic addiction every day tonnes of plastic waste is being sent Phukets landfill and the incinerator at its maximum the problem is only getting worse with each passing day.

It is up to Phuket citizens and students to join together and help reduce plastic consumption in Phuket.

We are calling on all Thai people to pressure their business to instruct their staff to ask: "Do you need a plastic bag?"

Thailand is the 6th worst-offending country for plastic that ends in the oceans, in the world.

Our plastic ends up in the street, in our canals, in the rivers, on our beaches and in the oceans. It is poisonous to us and suffocating for wildlife. And it looks ugly!

- Every year, the floods in Thailand are worse as plastic bags clog sewers and canals.
- Plastic in our oceans is turning the fish we eat toxic. Enjoy your sushi ...
- Plastic kills our marine life, our fish, our turtles and our birds.

Worst of all. Plastic takes 1,000 years to degrade. So please help us to take the challenge to retailers, supermarkets and convenience stores.

โดนเฉลี่ยแล้วคนไทยแต่ละคนจะใช้พลาสติกคนละ 8 ถุงต่อวัน โดยรวมๆ แล้ว เราใช้พลาสติกมาถึง 500,000,000 ถุง ต่อวัน

พลาสติกที่เราใช้จะถูกทิ้งลงถนน คลอง แม่น้ำ หรือ ทะเล ซึ่งจะก่อให้เกิดมลพิษทางน้ำและยังทำร้ายสัตว์น้ำต่างๆ และยังทำให้ทุกๆ ที่ไม่น่าดู

Bad food, sometimes food-poisoning, drugs, wounds, no proper bathing, drinking from posh fountains in front of shopping malls or hotels and being “cared” for and eating at hide-aways on rubbish-belts. And don’t forget that the name “elephant” appears at lists mentioning the top ten of the most deadly animals!
