Say "No" to further pension changes

ATL believes modestly-paid education staff deserve good pensions as part of a fair remuneration package with enough income to live independently and with dignity in retirement.

The coalition government plans huge reforms to public sector pensions, potentially telling education professionals:

You must pay more for your pension;

You must work longer before getting it;

You will get less money in retirement;

Say no to paying more, working longer, getting less!

Sign this petition to join ATL in speaking out for pensions; rejecting attempts to force reform on recently reviewed schemes; and telling the coalition government that this triple whammy of change is unacceptable.

Review the proposed 2012 NMBA increased registration fee for nurses and midwives

We draw the attention of the NMBA and the Minister for Health & Ageing to the outrage of the professions at the decision of the NMBA to increase the 2012 registration fee for nurses and midwives by $45.00 from $115.00 to $160.00, that is an increase of almost 40%.

Whilst we continue to support self-regulation (which means being self-funded) and we continue to oppose any cross subsidisation between professions, we do not believe this increase is justifiable. We believe that any increase should not exceed the growth in Consumer Price Index (CPI) or wages growth.

One of the alleged benefits of moving to National Registration was the increased efficiencies and economies of scale that could be achieved by a national model. We have seen no evidence of such economies or efficiencies being implemented by the NMBA or their secretariat, the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

In addition, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) receives direct payment from training organisations who are seeking accreditation for nursing and midwifery programs of study. The cost implications of accreditation and monitoring should be factored into that payment to ANMAC.

Prevention is Better than Cure – Prevent the McCann of Worms!

Keeping people physically and emotionally healthy is the best investment financially and socially for the South Australian community.

Keeping people healthy and enhancing well-being improves the quality of life for all South Australians.

Keeping people healthy actively reduces premature death.

Keeping people healthy reduces chronic diseases and health system costs associated with them.

The State Government is considering recommendations from the McCann review of Non-Hospital Based Services which include:

•	cutting services that keep people healthy including older people, women, adolescents and children.
•	cutting services that allow people with chronic health conditions to live independently.
•	cutting services that work to combat the obesity epidemic, including ‘Community Foodies’.
•	slashing up to 50% from services that are already struggling with tight budgets.
•	slashing up to 50% from services that are reducing the cost (both financial and human) that would be spent on medical treatment.

These recommendations from the McCann review are short-sighted and will only increase the burden on our already over-stretched hospital system. These recommendations are not based on sound evidence.

These recommendations are also completely at odds with previous review recommendations, current Government Policy, and international health thinking which support increased investment in primary health care, particularly disease prevention and health promotion.

We all know that prevention is better than cure, so please sign this petition which calls on the State Government to reject these recommendations of the McCann review.

Prevention is better than cure, so keep people as healthy as possible and prevent the McCann of worms!

London Metropolitan University Students' Union in Crisis

London Met Students' Union recently had a new constitution imposed on us by the university.

None of the unions' ideas and views were included and this has led to a document that removes all power from SU elected officers.

Clubs and Societies will no longer be part of the union and the position of an officer has been reduced to little more than an administrative role. This is because of a cynical attempt by the university to save money and stop the union from campaigning on issues that effect our students.

London Metropolitan University boasts that it is socially inclusive and democratic. It state it offers equal opportunities during your time there you will have a great Student Experience.

This cynical attempt to impose a new constitution, reducing democracy, reducing inclusion and reducing equal opportunities brings this all into question.

For more information you can download the new constitution at:
http://www.londonmetsu.org.uk/main/union/constitution/Newconstitution

Please help our cause as we have very little time. We need as many signatures as possible to convince the governors, so please sign the petition below.

Thanks

Registered Nurses have eliminated a 2 year diploma program with a grandfather diploma allowing nurses to continue working in their career with no further education.
