Farmers used to be the custodians of the countryside. When I was a boy the countryside meant peace and quiet. I was born and bred in Lincolnshire, a rural county with wide open spaces and big fields full of crops. Now, these same fields are littered with bird-scarers, shattering the tranquility and my nerves.
I find the modern "countryside" a hostile environment, it has turned into an agri-factory, and it is clear that some farmers seem to have no regard for the local inhabitants in their quest for greater productivity. I guess they think they can do what they like on their own land.
I now spend my life indoors wearing ear plugs. Sad but true. I used to enjoy being outside, but now I get tensed up when I open the door and have to venture into the garden, expecting that "BANG" at any moment.
We had stubble-burning a few years ago, but that was eventually banned, thank God. Now we have this.
Can anything be done, or will I still be wearing ear plugs when they put me in my grave?
