The act basically made a horse worthless and we are introducing new diseases to wild horses that are FEDERALLY protected that they didn't have before because we have no way to make a profit off of sick and badly hurt horses. When we did have horse slaughter we were the ONLY country that had a HUMANE way of slaughtering a horse. Canada and Mexico just cut the head off the horse WHILE it's still ALIVE.

Unwanted horses are being abandoned, neglected and starved. Opening slaughter houses to back up for horses would give horses that have no purpose a purpose. These horses could be used as pet food, glue, fertilizer etc. and give people who cannot afford to keep their horses an outlet other than starvation. Ending horse slaughter in the US does not stop cruelty to horses, it increases it 10 fold.

Create laws for human transportation, care, proper ID (compare to stolen horse database, scan for microchips, etc), and of course monitoring of the slaughter process. Since this passed the equine industry has taken a serious turn for the worse. Do I like slaughter of horses? No, but it is a needed part of life.

That said, is it more humane for a horse to have to ride in a trailer to a place in the U.S. or somewhere in Canada or Mexico where laws on euthanizing aren't even regulated. I hope that horse slaughter can be brought back to the U.S. because the market needs a base price and slaughter provides that.
