How could she do long division without them? Everyone needs to know the times tables. Calculators aren't any help in working with fractions or in setting up algebra problems. Outside of the classroom basic math is required all the time, for grocery shopping, baking and many other purposes. Coloured blocks and other visual aids are fine as a way to introduce a new topic, but ultimately kids need to know how to use numbers.

It was absolutely terrible. Highly confusing to them and me. As an engineer I'm well versed in mathematics. I never met another person, including teachers, who thought it was a good book. My youngest took Kumon to teach him math. The book jumped into abstract thought before one had mastered the basics. I'm extremely happy the uselessness of Math Makes Sense is being brought to light.

I think that the use of extensive pictorial representation of mathematic concepts is ineffective, and that children need to learn traditional math skills instead. For example, by grade four, they should not be adding by drawing cubes and sticks! 1 in grade 10, 1 in grade 7 and 2 more just started kindergarten. Math is so important and the basics need to be taught in elementary school. My child in grade 10 is really struggling. There is no time for him to grasp the concepts before another one is being taught and then a test comes and he panics. It should also be a linear subject in high school. A whole year can lapse depending on a time table. Its hard enough over summer break.

The average child cannot (and does not) solve complex problems without having command of more basic skills such as

My first child was not prepared for Grade 6, and we found that during the summer and also through grade 6 that we spent hours bridging the gap. Our second child had the benefit of a grade 5 teacher that understood what was required and as result taught what they needed to know for Grade 6 and it has made an amazing difference... however Grade 5 was a shock from Grade 4 math in order to bridge the gap.

I often asked my wife why I was having to teach math to my children, I thought that was what I sent them to school for. Good thing that I am good at math and at teaching them math. I pitty the children who have parents that don't have the time or ability to do this.

They are smart kids, they are eager to learn, but they lack the most fundamental of skills in the area of math, handicapping them in school and once they graduate, in the working world.

If I were an employer, I'd be terrified of the lack of even the most rudimentary math skills which these kids are bringing to the table.

If I were a parent, I'd be worried sick about my child's ability to compete in a rapidly globalizing economy which relies so much upon high technology.

Back to the basics ... back to the fundamentals ... admit what we have been doing does NOT work and time to fix it.

I am thankful they are self motivated and we are self committed to push them to excel beyond the curriculum. If not, the skills they would leave with would be inadequate for the types of roles we should see our children take up in the future. I know this reality, as I am a business leader of a global orgaization that hires hundreds of engineers in multiple countries. At this moment, I am in India with my Indian team and I can tell you we are falling behind in a mighty way. I see the future, and a weak math system with poor fundamentals will leave our kids looking from the outside in the digital economy. ALL kids need basic fundamental math skills, and ALL need to appreciate the value they can derive from this learning.
Shame on ALL of us. We can do so much bettter and we owe it to our kids and our communities and our economy to not accept the low proficiency I have seen through 4x children + comparisons to the systems in France(where my children also attended) and India and China.

The current curriculum has had a horrible effect on the students basic understanding of math. Calculators are used to do the simplest math problems. Grade 12 students using a calculator to compute 6X7 or 1/2 - 2/3 is sad to see. Asking a student to find two numbers that multiply to 12 and add to 7 without using a calculator should not be that challenging of a question for a student that can multiply numbers from 1 to 10.

Children need to know the very basics of these two subjects in particular before they can possibly learn to think creatively, critically and with more complexity. Learning Math and English basics may be "boring" but they are crucial and, unfortunately, sorely lacking in many Middle and High School students.

It has been shown that all kids can learn math, they just need to do it frequently and with repetition. Once the lightbulb goes on, kids enjoy math. We are creating an environment of confusion that is leaving kids frustrated and disinterested in math. Several parents I've spoken to with older kids say that the courses are taught too quickly (within a single Term), children often require tutoring outside of SD 63, and some are purposefully shying away from any career majors that require higher level math. Lets get back to some solid basics ASAP please before more children lose out! Thank you very much!
