Mr. Patrick George, Guyana
Dumela! Please give due recognition to L F S Burnham for his contribution to and unwavering support of the liberation movements of Africa. He was a strong black man who fought long and hard for his race and all other oppressed people. People are trying to deny him this due award precisely because he is a black man and their racist feelings just cant stand him, this strong black man, getting this award. They have also managed, through their political propagandizing to mislead others into supporting their racist agenda. Please Mr. Zuma, in the name of the Madiba, don't let this happen; give Burnham his award. He didn't let your people down, don't let him down.

The South African government's withdrawal of the O.R. Tambo Award is an insult to the memory of this great man and the sacrifices endured by the people of Guyana because of his principled stance against racism. The only honorable thing for the South African government to do is reverse its decision.

Mrs. Juliet Holder-Allen, Linden., Please select your state, Guyana
It speaks volumes for the Government of a country to consider the conferment of an award posthumously to a Head of State for all of his actions in support of their people and policies during his lifetime, and then to listen to mere "gossip" by some non-entity person with some ace to grind, to unceremoniously withdraw that conferment. The Government of South Africa is simply "Ungrateful" to say the least , since the case for help and assistance given to them and their people by Mr L.F.S. Burnham Sc., has already been made out - hence the decision to confer the prestigious award to him in the first place. To create hurt and harm on his surviving relatives and friends by this present action is despicable and CANNOT be justified by any means. They had already "enjoyed" the benefits that the man had to offer during his lifetime, his time, energies, financial and other support. False "friends" are what they are, plain and simple.

Mr. Burnham's support was genuine. It was courageous, and it was the right thing for people of African descent, and people of good will around the world to cry out for the freedom of brothers and sisters suffering under the system of apartheid. Mr Burnham represented not only himself but THE PEOPLE OF GUYANA. The recognition if given would certainly take that point into consideration.

Under Burnham's leadership the liberation struggle became a centerpiece of Guyana's foreign policy. He was an unrelenting advocate and he also provided TANGIBLE financial, diplomatic and military support. His contribution eclipses those of the two previous worthy caribbean recipients of this distinguished award, Cheddi Jagan and Eric Williams. The South African government should resist efforts to politicize this process and give Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham his due.

Mr Colin Patterson, United States of America
Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham did many great things for the people of Guyana. To have a none Guyanese who has no knowledge of Mr. Burnham's legacy to the people of Guyana, opposing his receipt of the Oliver Tambo Award befuddles me. The esteemed Syracuse Professor who is a native of Jamaica is attempting to rewrite history by blaming the Jonestown Massacare on Burnham. As a member of Academia I believe the Syracuse Professor is damaging our profession which is one based on facts and empirical data, by making false claims with no supporting documentation to disparage the reputation of one of the West Indies most prominent elder statesmen who contributed a lot to the people of the west indies.

Dr. Terrence Blackman, Brooklyn, NEW YORK, United States of America
Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Forbes Burnham was one of the most uncompromising leaders in opposition to apartheid. As I read this I was reminded of Robin Jackman: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Jackman. Above many he deserves this award. His support for the dignity and freedom of Africans the world over was without question. It has had a profound effect on my own life and work. I urge folk of conscience to sign this petition. Let's grow up and see the world through a fact based lens and put principle and facts above politics.

Derrick Lawrence, Randallstown, Maryland, United States of America
It is very disappointing to learn that the government of South Africa would allow itself to be dragged into the internal political affairs of Guyana by even considering to defer an award that was unquestionably merited by the late President Forbes Burnham. Whatever others wish to say about Burnham, none can deny his unmatched commitment to the South African struggle against aparthied. He was a true fighter for that cause and deserves that award. Internal dynamics should not be made to alter the historical facts. Let the facts stand on their own and better judgement will dictate that Burnham be properly recognized and awarded appropriately for his contributions.
