Earning the respect of the upperclassmen during knob year, and then spending the next couple of years building friendships with them was on of the most rewarding and fulfilling parts of attending The Citadel. Splitting up knobs into new companies in my opinion takes that unique experience away from them. Please don’t do this!

Ultimately make cadets leave The Citadel. Suffering with your buddies makes the bond between you stronger, reshuffling will weaken that bond and in turn, weaken the entire corps. You don’t realize what you’re doing.

When I had the opportunity to pursue rank at the Battalion and Regimental level I chose to remain in my company. The friendships made and bonds formed between my classmates will last a lifetime. Each company has it’s own unique style and characteristics. The “sophomore shuffle” will deny these cadets the opportunity to form those bonds and will destroy each companies uniqueness.

The Citadel has been producing the finest men and woman in the country for over 150 years. The problem with many leaders is they feel like they have to make a change in order to leave their mark. This is a flaw in leadership development. Sometimes the best action is no action. The Citadel system is not broken, so stop messing with it.

Anonymous, Destin, FL
Company unity is a huge strength during my four years my company went from average grades and PT scores to the top GPA in the Corps and Best at PT( We got a free SMI pass from that). We built that culture as we went from knobs to Seniors and did our best to instill that culture into the classes behind us. We lead by example with having a no PT fail rate since second semester smack year and held that all the way to the end. We challenged following classes to do the same. We did the same for grades and studying. It made me damn proud to show that Kilo was the best and we were number one our Senior year. Pride in ones company is what pushes others to surpass and do better to. For a knob to come into a company where you know you were going to be pushed physically and academically because we are number one. I mean if that’s what they want to get ride of I don’t know how it’s a good idea, that’s just my two cents.

Every toxic environment I saw during my 4 years was largely due to the actions of incompetent or, at times, malicious TAC officers who contributed nothing of value to their respective companies or battalions. The only good TACs were the ones that tried to shield us from the insipid little ideas that came down from Jenkins Hall. Stop hooking them up with a cushy retirement gigs and put that money towards quality of life improvements for the cadets (the chowhall) or things that both the Cadets and Alumni take pride in (the Seraph monument has a cracked foundation, which is disgraceful).

The people with whom I’d struggled and overcome all of the obstacles of the fourth class system. That year brought all of us together and made us a tight knit and more effective team throughout the upperclass years. Taking that away takes away one of the best things about the school, and is just a tone deaf idea. Each graduate I spoke to before coming said that the bonds formed with COMPANY classmates are incredibly strong, and I saw it firsthand with my older brother when he attended before me-I knew I would gain a new group that would support me no matter what, and I would be able to support them. I don’t care what you think the ‘benefits’ are: the means do no justify the needs.

MAJ (Ret) Graham Fox, Tierra Verde, FL, United States of America
Despite being old, salty, and supposedly knowing better, I still have a naive heart that continually sets me up for great disappointment. I had high hopes that our newly appointed president, a 4-Star Marine Corps General, would bring the kind of organizational leadership to The Citadel that it both needs and deserves; instead we get The Who's “meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”

Collective punishment and training can have a great benefit when implemented correctly and at appropriate times such as initial Cadre/Knob training. The joint hardships and suffering can be the driving force that quickly builds a sense of unity and comradeship amongst the knobs; their animosity and indignation universally directed towards the Cadre instead of each other. During such events, the actual correction of any mis-deed the punishment is being given for takes on a secondary or even inconsequential role. Conversely, universal punishment applied to a military organization with the sole role of correcting the problems created by a few are universally unsuccessfully, and breed nothing but contempt, distrust, and a serious lack of respect towards the implementing authority. These situations are often the last bastion of an ineffective leader, for it is far simpler to implement a broad collective policy than to be a true leader and fix the perceived problem directly.

If [and it’s a big IF] there are problem companies/cadets within the corps that have created a toxic environment around them, then do your job to address and fix those issues directly! To reshuffle the entire corps to ‘fix’ the problem doesn’t address the problem directly, and instead undercuts the strong bonds of brotherhood that were created during Knob year that for most of us continue for decades after we last stepped foot inside our beloved institution.

I wish this plea was taken to heart, but regrettably I am all to familiar with one simple truth: An Alumnus with a checkbook is always a guest, but an Alumnus with an opinion? He’s is simply a pest…

Not one more dime.

Mr Jeff Withee, Baltimore, Md
During my time at the Citadel, I formed many life long friendships. There are those you went through your Major with and those you trained with in ROTC., but those friendships you forged in steel as knobs and continued to hone over the next three years that mean the most. That being said, It’s not just staying with your classmates for four years that is great. It’s having a part of the school that feels like home. Being with same upper class man Over the next two years is like having older siblings and mentors built-in. Bottom line is there are too many good things about staying in the same company to change it.

Mr Kyle McCormick, Ridgefield, Connecticut, United States of America
The claim that company cultures are toxic and there should only be a school-wide culture is ridiculous. The people you live close with are the ones you make lasting bonds and fond memories with and the company cultures are what reenforce those bonds. Going through knob year in one company and then switching to an entirely new one will destroy moral of all sophomores because they will feel like they will have to earn their seat at the table all over again because they are yet again the new comers to the company they switch to. The most rewarding part about the Citadel is rising through the ranks in the same company you knobbed in and being able to see the transition of the upperclassmen from being your trainers to being your friends in almost a blink of an eye. This new policy will obliterate one of the most valuable aspects of the citadel and ruin the cadet experience.
