Sensei Joshua Davis, Midlothian, VA, United States of America
I believe there is less risk to children in a martial arts class than there is in Flag Football or soccer. There is more contact in roller skating than there is training in a dojo. A lot of martial arts is forms and yelling while the children are young. The sport is about personal development, discipline, respect, school work, achievement, and hard work. Many of the same values that the boy scouts and cub scouts promote. I have a son with social challenges and was not until he started martial arts that he began to turn around. Please help us reward our cub scouts and boys scout by recognizing their hard work.

Furthermore, there is competition Poomse (Forms) which will be no different from Tai-Chi.

Mrs Sarah Keatley, Williamsburg, VA, United States of America
I am fully onboard with the stipulations set forth in this petition. All sports can be dangerous without the proper equipment and supervision. Having a child who is different in more ways than one, TKD has been one of the best things we have done for him. It would be nice to be able to recognize his atheletic and disciplinary achievements from TKD in Cub Scouts. Of all the unrecognized sports listed for scouting, martial arts is the sore thumb. No scout parent would reasonably expect a den or pack to conduct this training in their meetings, but would rather have the expectation that this is an individual achievement.

He has never been injured while participating. He has learned positive qualities such as integrity, courtesy, perseverance, self control, and indomitable spirit. He knows it is only to be used as a last resort. I find it a disservice to our scouts not to promote self defense in a safe knowledgable environment such as a karate school. My kids earn their loops through other avenues such as family, church, and school so there is no reason martial arts shouldn't be included as a belt loop option.

Mr. Anthony Greiner, Brentwood, MO, United States of America
While Taekwondo can and does include some physical contact, the sport is not about physical aggression. Through Taekwondo my children have learned self-confidence, self-respect, self-discipline and other life skills previously not previously provided them in other group activities. They have learned commitment through setting goals and achieving them. The have learned how to be supportive of their peers. These life skills have been instrumental in all facets of their lives – in social, educational, and family settings. The sport of Taekwondo has been a very positive influence on my children and our family.
Just last evening my children attended a seminar at the ATA facility on the topic of Bullying. This is a topic which has been repeatedly presented to them in their Taekwondo training. They and their fellow students are now educated on the emotional and physical damage bullying can do – they know it is wrong and should never be allowed. Through their training these kids now have the confidence to identify and peacefully intervene when they see a bullying incident occurring. They learned this through their affiliation with the sport of Taekwondo.

It has taught him respect, focus, discipline, restraint. It has improved his body and his mind! It has taught him to avoid violence and fighting and to go in peace. But becasue he tries to better himself and do a tournament it is not considered safe. Well guess what, he wears full padding from head to toe if he is in a full contact regulated/supervised situation.

At the end of each class, his group always goes over the following: Respect my country, Listen to my parents, Make good choices, Help my friends, and Don't be a quitter. Are these not some of the same ideals taught in Scouting? The benefits of Tang Soo Do (Karate) are physical fitness, mental strength, discipline, and family fun. Once again this parallels the benefits of Scouting. Please elevate Scouting by approving the martial arts for our Scouts.

From my own experience, I know he can improve himself through the activities and experiences in Scouting. He also joined Tang Soo Do (Karate). Although only in Karate for a short time, I can see it improving his focus and respect for others without intent to injury. This is helping him become a better person and better Scout. Please approve karate as an activity for Scouting - to help elevate today's youth. Barry Bryan, Eagle Scout 1985

Ms. Sarah Walker, Fort Dodge, Iowa, United States of America
In our Tae Kwon Do classes we are taught to be prepared to defend ourselves in the event it is necessary. We are taught that the best defence is to diffuse the situation first. We learn to live by the five tenants of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indominable spirit. I believe that if you re-examine the Boy/Cub Scouts oath, law pledge and motto this is exactly what our young boys are supposed to be learning as they become men.

You have the boys visit a police station and police carry a gun - what is more violent than guns. However, we understand that this is necessary for self defense and to protect the community. Knowing karated doesn't mean you will harm someone - it just means you are armed if needed but you are taught self discipline and care in using this weapon. It is def. a sport and I am going to acknowledge it at our pack mtg
