mr mark maxson
I attended Iowa State U and moved to Cedar Rapids upon graduation in 1975. I worked for P&H and then Square D before relocating to California in 1986. I was friends with John Saggers, a former president of
Peoples Bank, and got to see areas of the bank that the general public did not. It would be a shame to see this very unusual Sullivan building destroyed. The vault door always astounded me, and the basement was so typical Sullivan that I found myself feeling like I knew him personally. Save this weird, different building. Sullivan cut corners on the outside to meet the construction costs back then, but inside WOW. I almost cried when I saw the bank flooded.

john plant
it seems pretty ridiculous to me that something so sensible as saving such a historic building and defining a area of your city for posterity and MOST CERTAINLY FINANCIAL GAIN , even needs a petition to sway your minds to do what is Right, and surely in the city 's best interest. or do u want to be known as the city that let a Louis Sullivan building die? You will have that stigma for a LONG time!

If the city were interested in saving the Louis Sullivan Bank it could certainly find the money. I will vote no tomorrow. They must provide accountability for the use of this money.

The further destruction of the architectural fabric of the city, including the construction of floodwalls and levees, will not accomplish this. Rather, it will only lead to the impoverishment of the life of the city. Surely, a better solution can be found

Anonymous
I'm a Cedar Rapids native and an engineer.
- It seems the requirements have changed since the original competition was held. Redefine the need without prescribing a solution, and re-compete the project.
- Levees and flood walls have shown themselves to be failure prone and NOT fail safe. In a sense, they attempt to constrain nature, and such attempts are so often in vain.
- Consider other options and work WITH the river and its immense power rather than attempting to fight it.

I also view some of the other historical sites and always come away thankful they are there.
If Cedar Rapids no longer had them I would probably not make it one of my stops anymore.

Mr. Wilbert R. Hasbrouck
It was my pleasure to be the restoration architect for the Cedar Rapids bank designed by Louis Sullivan. It is one of the great buildings of the 20th century. Demolishing it would be a travesty regardless of the reason. It must be kept, restored again (an easy situation) and continued as a landmark of Cedar Rapids, the state of Iowa and the United States. W. R. Hasbrouck, FAIA
