It was established because US government thought Indians were incapable of handling their own land issues. The BIA should only be involved if their services are requested by Indians on a voluntary basis...otherwise, we are smart enough to handle our own issues and would have done a much better job as demonstrated by Eloise Cobell winning the largest suit ever brought against the federal government who lost millions of dollars worth of Indian peoples money and resources. The idea that they always look out for our interest was clearly dispelled when the Cobell lawsuit was won. What is disturbing is that it is still doing business as usual and exploiting individual Indian land and resources. They need to be put out of business except where their services are specifically requested. They are the problem not the solution for Indian people. It is a well documented fact, see Cobell lawsuit and CATO report regarding BIA performance. What non-Indian would put up with their business practice?
