Many of those people who are now in receipt of home help, will end up in hospital, at a much greater cost to the country. Apart from that extra cost, it must be said that the majority of them would prefer to stay in their own home if at all possible. Forget about the ipads/tablets or whatever for the TDs as they will probably be left in a drawer some place, and use that money for the home helps.

I assist every way I can to ensure they can stay living at home. Regrettably I live and hour and a half from them. We rely desperately on his personal carers to cope. Rural Ireland is pretty bereft at the moment to say the least. Home Help offers essential personal care, emotional support, security, human contact to our elderly and disabled.
It keeps people in their own homes and communities. It would be a detrimental blow to community life to lose hours. It is a hands on and practical service. Getting clients out of bed, washed, dressed, and given correct nutrition and allaying isolation, loneliness and depression. It would be a false economy to reduce this service. A society is defined by how we look after our less able members. The Senior Citzens set up this Country. They had tough times. Great loyalty to their families and Country. They did not generate this current abyss.
To cut Home Help hours is actually immoral and will not have positive outcomes. Policy makers too will experience old age and vulnerability. Exercise Wisdom and govern this country with some Heart and Spirit. The Bank debts are a red herring globally. Break the Trance. Long live our elderly neighbours and friends and the Home Help Personnel. This Service will never wane or be reduced. Because Good Sense will prevail. Peace and Blessings.

She also had long standing MS and had been in a wheel chair for many years. Without the help of the Home Carers it would have been impossible for her to remain at home. Their care and consideration helped to make her last three weeks of life bareable for her myself and our children. The total wages of the Home Carers were I suppose under 250 euros during this period. This must be compared to the cost of a hospital bed for this length of time which would have been, as you are well aware, many multiples of this sum. I think your policy of cutting Home Care is finacially unsound and ethically wrong. To be able to look after and care for my wife of 50 years with the Home Carers help in her last few weeks of life was a privalage and one which I wish others to have the opportunity to have.
