They were AMERICAN VETERANS. The notion of slavery being the issue is not only ludicrous but totally incorrect. It was about central government forcing it's will on the individual states and it's citizens.
It must be pointed out that black soldiers served side by side with their brothers in arms in the Confederate forces, no so with the union forces, they were segregated.

Americans fought and died for it, including some Americans of African descent who lived in the South during the war. And some of the wealthy Northerners kept slaves, so the story that the war was to abolish slavery is nonsense.
Removing the Stars and Bars will not solve anything. It will only show what a farce this "political correctness" is, and how an ignorant minority thinks it will ever stifle the American spirit.

I feel for the familys but the flag had no more to do with what happened than the gun that kennedy did.
