My years at Bailey were the happiest years I had as a student. Things have changed we all realize but help is needed in these schools. I am now a retired MNPS teacher. I loved what I did for 30 years. I spent one summer teaching at Inglewood. Millions of dollars have been spent rebuilding and rehabilitating the schools on Register's list. It astonishes me he would want to take the road he is on. Many things can be done to help the families and children of the children not only at Inglewood but the other schools on his list. I am appalled to see East Nashville Schools destroyed. Is there something in it for him? Charter Schools, for the most part, make very little difference if any.

The success of any sort of restructuring is incumbent on soliciting the input of the very people who have quietly invested in the schools that are currently performing in the neighborhood. My other question is if you are going to offer "transportation" to all students to the school of their choice why does that only apply to East Nashville schools? Why are impoverished students not being offered the opportunity to enroll or apply for any school in the city? Is that not in of itself prejudicial?

I volunteer time and donate money to help the process along. The teachers and administrative staff at our school have been top of the line and engaging. I believe that because we have such a strong community/family involvement, the children who see and experience that will learn and repeat that vital behavior. If a school and it's community (it's important to distinguish that cyclic system) help each other, all participants benefit. Even those without kids to consider will enjoy a much more solid and engaging community with a better hope for the future of all around. We are on a win-win course and should not adjust our trajectory, no matter what the 'numbers' say. This is a special and precious matter. Children come first. Numbers second.

I know that the task of addressing failing schools and making education reform are complex and challenging, but we are not the first city to have to address these concerns and we have the support of a very involved community who wants to help make these changes good for everyone and for the long haul.

I oppose any plan to open, close or repurpose schools in East Nashville without consulting a community task force.

I ask you to vote to oppose Dr. Register's "Third Way" plan for East Nashville schools, until a community task force has been created and consulted on any school changes in Stratford/Maplewood clusters.

I hope to be involved and to help continue to make the East Nashville community and neighborhood a special, safe, and wonderful place, to live, raise, and educate kids.
