Many people are suffering in Ukraine from the devastating war. It is now time that the plight of animals should be addressed as well. Since February 2022 there is ample evidence that animals have been undergoing extreme deprivations. Many animals have been taken by their companions, but there is also many more that have been abandoned. Numerous starving dogs and cats are wandering the cities and countryside. It has even been observed that dogs are eating human corpses. Rescue shelters have been bombed. The magnitude of this problem is beyond comprehension.
The war in Ukraine is hastening global suffering with the killings and with the disruption of grain supplies, dramatically increasing food insecurity in impoverished countries in Africa and Asia.
Numerous world leaders and organizations have condemned the war for its destruction of people and property. We most certainly agree with the declarations that decry the violation of human rights. But now it is time to stand up as well for the suffering of animals in Ukraine that are directly affected and in other parts of the world that are the indirect victims of the reduction of grain supplies. These conditions are particularly deleterious as they are on top of a human generated climate crisis that has resulted in reduction in the populations of many animal species, some of whom now are facing immanent extinction.
In response to the fighting many people fled with their pets or had to abandon them locked in their homes or forced outdoors to fend for themselves. Countless thousands of traumatized animals are roaming the country. Starving dogs have been seen eating animal corpses and even human bodies. Barns with animals have been blown up. Animal shelters and zoos have been bombarded and many animals have died of slow starvation locked in their pens. The Gostomel Animal Shelter, for instance, was bombed many times and invading soldiers used their dogs as target practice.
We the undersigned people do hereby denounce the wanton murder of untold numbers of animals as a result of this ongoing war. We demand the immediate cessation of hostilities for the sake of the suffering animals as well as the innocent humans who are innocent victims of the war.
We ask that people make donations for the relief efforts of local animal rescue groups and international organizations laboring in Ukraine.
