Abolish the monarchy in Britain

The monarchy doesn't do much. There's no getting round the fact. They sit there in their umpteen palaces and castles, talking posh, counting their millions, and basically looking down their noses at us.

America doesn't have a monarchy (not that I know of, anyway), and in the UK, the laws are made and enforced primarily by democratic government.

The royals should learn that there is more to life than money and fame. For example, take Siddhartha Gautama (for those of you who don't know, he was the founder of Buddhism). He was an Indian prince, and his father (the king), asked some wise men what he would become. They said either a great king or a great holy man. The king wanted him to be king after himself, so he gave him loads of riches, and tried to keep him away from seeing things like the sick and homeless, which would encourage him to be a holy man.

But one day, Siddhartha went for a walk, and saw an old man, a sick man, and a dead body. He was very upset about this, and it made him think. So he ran away from the palace to seek the meaning of life. A few years later, he became enlightened.

Now go back to the beginning. He was a prince, he had everything he could possibly want. But it wasn't enough for him. He left it all behind to make the world a better place!

Somehow, I can't see any of our royals doing anything so totally cool. All they want is money. End of.

Not that our politicians are really much better. But at least they don't talk as posh and have so much flashy jewels.

And the palaces? Wouldn't they be better converted into care homes for people less fortunate than us?
