Teen vaping is an epidemic. As FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., said in September 2018, "E-cigs have become an almost ubiquitous ‒ and dangerous ‒ trend among teens. The disturbing and accelerating trajectory of use we’re seeing in youth, and the resulting path to addiction, must end."
According to school numbers from AISD's websites, each one of Anderson High School's assistant principals is responsible for 554 students, the second-highest ratio for AISD high schools (after Bowie High School, where each AP oversees 573 students).
Because it is simply not possible for the assistant principals to keep up with vaping on campus, we urge AISD to provide additional support and resources.
We, the undersigned, call on the Austin Independent School District to provide resources to address the vaping epidemic at Anderson High School.
-Add "vaping" as an official discipline code in DEEDS (Disciplinary Electronic Educational Documentation System).
-Create a BLEND (AISD's digital learning space) online course to teach parents about vaping prevention, risks and cessation.
-Provide a digital, anonymous reporting system.
-Schedule visits at Anderson by AISD's canine units (for detection of other substances, and to promote an abstinence culture).
-Provide funding for the purchase and installation of vape detectors in Anderson's 18 student restrooms.
