Students who have, Asperger's Syndrome (AS), Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD), or and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD-NOS), are not, successfully, receiving a free and appropriate education in the majority of our local public schools.
This is evidenced by the fact that as adults, 80% of these students remain unemployed, and under-employed. Children with AS, NLD and PDD-NOS, often have difficulty with confidence, peer relationships, language development, listening and attentiveness.
Their social skills may not be sufficiently developed as they face many obstacles in the traditional school environment. Though usually bright and creative, they are less likely to succeed.
We, the parents, educators, and service providers, of students with Asperger's Syndrome, Nonverbal Learning Disorder, and PDD-NOS, ask the Office of Education, in the Counties of, Placer, Nevada, Sacramento, Yolo, and Sutter to work together, with us, to create a school model for this student population.
Currently, there are schools, both private and public, that are successfully educating these students with a tested, proven curriculum. Some of these schools include: The Orion Academy, The Springstone School, The Village Glen Schools, Wings Learning Resources, Summit Academies, and Fairfax County Public Schools.
We ask, the Counties listed, for a public, charter or magnet school, that will accommodate the special needs of this student population. This school is not intended to be a competitor of the local public schools, but a partner in reaching those children who fall between the cracks of traditional education. This school is in a real sense a part of the local public school system. It is our goal to be of one mind, which is focused on the child.
It is our desire to establish a school locally that will meet the needs of these young people so that they may each receive the most fulfilling school experience possible.
