The plight of child soldiers is real in Africa. The phenomenon emerged three decades ago with the Ugandan National Resistance Army of Yoweri Museveni in 1981. It intensified during the years that followed when almost all rebel movements in the Great Lakes region and far beyond on the continent involved the use of children in their fight against incumbent regimes.
Invisible Children have always avoided linking the suffering of these children to the political context that explain the motives of rebels who appear directly responsible of the misery caused. But to willingly ignore the root cause of the issue and go as far as perpetuating the racist card of Africa being helpless and hopeless is a treatment that Africans should stand up against more firmly.
Kony 2012 campaign by Invisible children should become a wake up call for Africans. There are other Kony's in Sub-Saharan Africa that the US is allies with like Museveni [Uganda] and Kagame [Rwanda], who are more despicable than the one being fingered out. The question rises of asking why do the producers of the sensational video to capture Kony play double standard when the devil they pursue is the least dangerous.
It’s frightening how Kony 2012 film conveys Africans as being helpless. The tactic rests well with so many White westerners. It is a number one way to get them to open their "hearts" and purses. If it were to criticize corporate imperialism of resources and proxy wars and US alliances with Museveni and the western support of various dictators then it would be hitting on something radical and concrete.
The board of directors on the Invisible Children organization are all primarily white Americans which is concerning, considering the amount of blood shed and havoc people of European descent have and continue to wreak upon on Africa, from their own ignorance and white supremacist attitudes.
The history of the European and USA extraction of resources from Africa demonstrate there has been an ongoing colonization occurring of the continent with trillions $ worth of coal, copper, gold, diamonds, oil, coltan (which goes into all electronic supplies) etc, that continue to be plundered and profited from, by many of the people who claim to be working in the area of "development," at the expense of the people that live on the continent.
1. Africa has had enough of being negatively portrayed, seeing its image unscrupulously tarnished by greedy and egocentric Westerners with their African accomplices
2. Africa is tired of being the theater of US and other foreign countries’ policies aimed at serving their own interests at the expense of its populations.
3. Africa cannot continue anymore bearing consequences of racist views from organizations pretending to support its development.
4. Africa must stop being a subject of entertainment and emotional appeal to Westerners.
We, the undersigned, call upon all African governments, primarily those of Uganda, Sudan, Southern Sudan Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic,
1. To ban Invisible Children from operating on their respective territories as the charity’s misrepresentation of national realities in those countries is seriously damaging for their image; the same call goes to other African governments where the charity may also be active;
2. To seek political solution to end social problems that their respective populations continue to experience, instead of resorting to military interventions most of the time backed by external partners interested in serving their own interests
We demand from donor countries and governments external to Africa interested in supporting the development of the continent to stop their pretended humanitarian interventions in African affairs; as an alternative they could work more actively to establish democratic and accountable institutions instead of colluding with dictators who oppress and exploit their populations.
We appeal to developed countries, partners of Africa to stop pushing African countries to pursue a failed model of development they themselves have never used; aid policies associated with humanitarian interventionism have proven to be reminiscences of a white supremacist complex of slavery and colonial eras. In addition, no developed country has reached their current level of development through aid.
