- Target:
- Government Officials of North Carolina
- Region:
- United States of America
One thousand people die each each year from car accidents caused by people distracted on cell phones. Outlawing the use of handheld cell phones while driving would greatly reduce this number. THis law has already been passed in New York, so it would be wonderful if North Carolina could be the next state to pass such a law.
We, the undersigned citizens of North Carolina, draw the attention of the North Carolina state government to the following:
THAT the distraction caused by mobile phone use while driving quadruples the risk of a collision during the brief period of a call, a rate equivalent to the impairment caused by legal intoxication,
THAT legislation banning the use of a handheld mobile phone while driving a moving vehicle would greatly assist in reducing fatal car collisions,
THAT there are many other safer options available to the public, such as hands-free mobile phones and voice recognition dialing,
THEREFORE we are petitioning that a North Carolina law be passed to ban the use of a handheld mobile phone while driving a moving vehicle in order to promote the well being and safety of the citizens of North Carolina.
