Umbrella rigs, such as the Alabama Rig, are considered illegal in many states. They are not considered a single lure tied to a line, but multiple lures and/or hooks.
An umbrella rig is defined as an array of more than three artificial lures or baits (with or without hooks) used by a single rod and reel combination. FLW's rule #12, "Permitted fishing methods" states...Fishing is defined as having A LURE attached to a line and a rod and reel with THE LURE in the water.
The use of this MULTI LURE rig completely compromises the integrity of professional bass fishing and creates many other possible negative issues for the sport down the road.
We, the undersigned, call on the professional bass tournament fishing organizations to eliminate the use of umbrella type rigs, such as the Alabama Rig, from professional bass tournaments.
We understand it is not a lure, but several lures attached to a wire device. Umbrella rigs compromise the sport we love and have no place in tournament competition, especially at the highest level.
We feel that FLW's Rule #12 should never be compromised and must be enforced.
