Children exposed to second-hand smoke are more at risk of coughs, colds, ear problems, and chest infections.
The particles are so small 85% of them are invisible and odourless.
Second-hand smoke contains more than 4,000 toxic chemicals. The particles are smaller than dust and drift easily.
Children inhale twice as much dust as adults because they breathe faster. They will breathe more of the toxic chemicals in second-hand smoke.
Second-hand smoke can trigger an asthma attack. In children who have asthma already, it can make attacks more severe, and more frequent.
It is not fair that our children pass through smoke each day and were concerned about the health issues that second-hand smoke might cause.
Ultimately children a learning how to smoke and that smoking is acceptable each time they witness an adult smoking outside of the school gates.
Second-hand smoke - which is when you breathe in smoke from cigarettes, but don't smoke directly - is not nearly as dangerous as smoking itself, it can still be damaging to breathe in, in a similar way to pollution.
We the people of south London ask that smoking be banned with 300 yards of all our south London school gates and signings are erected warning parents that if they smoke outside the school gates they will face a fine of £300.
