Southern Brooklyn has suffered from poor subway service for many years, with lines like the R train being nicknamed the “rarely” line by commuters because of how infrequent it is, and the excessively long waits that regularly occur, both during peak and off-peak periods. Additionally, Southwest Brooklyn communities such as Bay Ridge are known for their large senior population, where many subway stations are either far away, inaccessible, or non-existent, as is the case in areas such as Dyker Heights, parts of Bensonhurst and Bath Beach.
As pitiful as the transit options are in Southwest Brooklyn, Southeast Brooklyn is even worse. There are an array of neighborhoods that are known as “subway deserts”, such as Mill Basin, Bergen Beach, Gerritsen Beach, Marine Park, Manhattan Beach, Starrett City/Spring Creek, and parts of Sheepshead Bay and Canarsie. All of these communities have historically been underserved by inadequate, poor express bus service.
We, the undersigned, request that the MTA do the following:
-Provide more reliable express bus service on the X27, X28, X37, X38, BM1, BM2, BM3, BM4 and BM5 lines. Buses are constantly late and or no-shows both Downtown and Midtown, and cannot be tracked on BusTime with the regularity that the MTA promised when they introduced BusTime almost ten (10) years ago.
-Provide clean, safe express bus service. Reports of filthy express buses and broken seats are far too often.
-Increase express bus service during peak and off-peak periods on the X27, X28, X37 and X38 lines, and expand the span of service on weekends to run later at night to Brooklyn, both Saturday and Sunday. During rush hour, the aforementioned lines suffer from overcrowding and standing room only conditions daily, and on Saturdays and Sundays, commuters face long, tedious trips back to Southern Brooklyn because the X27 and X28 end service too early, and/or subway service is suspended due to ongoing repairs.
-Restore and increase express bus service on the BM1, BM2, BM3, BM4 and BM5 express buses during peak and off-peak periods. For example, Saturday service was severely curtailed along the aforementioned lines years ago, and restoration of service must be considered with congestion pricing around the corner.
